1 Claim. (01. 311-67) 1 This invention relates to househdldfurniture such as card and breakfast tables where it is desired to extend the size of the table .top, andin particular an extensible top having asquare .cen-
Figure :3 is a .cross section, on .an-enlargedscale, through the-central partof the table ,top:taken .onrline 3-3 of Figure :1 illustrating the positions of the locking members with the sections of the ter panel with triangular shaped panels hinged :to table top extended as shown in Figure 1. the edges and adapted to fold to nested positions Figure l is a similar section also on an enlarged upon the square panel. scale taken on line 4+4 iOf Figure 2, illustrating The purpose of 'thisinventionris ;to provide a the :positions of the locking elements with-the tabletop in which the size thereof may be'inextending sections nested-upon the table top. creased without separate leaves or slides. With Referring now to. thedrawings wherein like this thought in mind this invention contemplates reference characters denote corresponding parts a extensible table p wherein the extending 90 the improved extensible'table top of this invensections fold to convenient nested positions upon tion, includes acenter panel [0, triangular shaped the table top where they are readily accessible corner sections ll, [2, l3 and I4, hinges It, a and also where they do not interfere with usual locking pin .I6 andispring actuated latch pins [1 use-of the-table. and I8 which are slidably mounted in tubular The object of this invention is, therefore, to casings I9 and 26, respectively and which are provide means for forming an extensible table top resiliently held with the ends thereof in grooves in which the elements for extending the sides of 2! and 22 of the pin It by springs 23 and 24. the table top are hinged to the edges thereof and The panel at is preferably square however, it are readily folded to nested position upon the may be made of different shapes and designs and, table. as shown in Figure 1, the extending sections are Another object of the invention is to provide shaped to nest upon the panels with the extendmeans for extending the sides of a table top, such ed corners thereof located at the center of the as a top used for card tables which permits norpanel when folded to nested positions upon the mal use of the table. panel.
A further object of the invention is to provide The hinges I5 are imbedded in the upper suran extensible table top wherein the extending faces of the panel and sections, as illustrated in sections are folded to nesting position upon the Figure '5, one plate 25 of each hinge being positable top, which is of a simple and economical ticned in a recess 26 in the panel [0 and the comconstruction. plementary plate 21 being positioned in a re- With these and other objects and advantages cess 28 in one of the se tions. Other features and advantages of the inven- The locking pin it is pos tio ed in an Opening tion will appear from the following description 39 in the center of the table top and a cylindritaken in connection with the drawings, wherein: cal head 3| of the pin nests in a recess 32 with Figure 1 is a plan view of the table top with the upper surface of the head flush with the the parts in the extended positions. upper surface of the table top, as shown in Fig- Figure 2 is a view similar to that shown in Figure 3. ure 1 with the expanding sections folded upon the With the sections l l l2, l3 and l 4 in extended table top. 5 positions, the head 3! is positioned in the recess 82 and the pins l1 and 18 extend into the annular groove 2| of the pin.
With the sections ll, [2, l3 and I4 folded to nested positions on the table top, the head 3|.
of the pin is positioned in recesses 33 in the corners of the extending sections and the pins l1 and I8 extend into the annular groove 22 of the pin [6, as shown in Figure 4. The pin I6, therefore, provides means for locking the extending sections in the folded position and with the head 3| of the pin in the recesses 33 the upper surface of the head of the pin is flush with corresponding surfaces of the sections.
The latch pins i1 and 18 are provided with enlarged sections 34 and 35 that are slidably mounted in the tubes 19 and 20, respectively and with the parts positioned as shown in Figure 3 the pins 11 and I8 extend through openings in the ends of the tubes.
The pins are retained in these positions by the springs 23 and 24 and tension on the springs is adjusted by plugs 38 and 31 threaded in the ends of the tubes. The tubes 19 and 20 are secured to the under surface of the table top by screws 36. v
The table top may be provided with legs as indicated by the dotted line 38 or the top may be supported by other suitable means.
With the parts as illustrated in Figure 6 the expanding sections 1 2 and 13 are partly folded upon the table top or panel l0 and the latching pin 16 is shown in an upwardly extended position before it is drawn downwardly into the locking position shown in Figures 3 and 4.
In a latch mechanism for an extensible table top, which comprises a panel having folding sections hinged to the edges whereby the sections are adapted to selectively fold outwardly top twice as large as the continuous square panel fold to nested positions upon said panel, the improvement comprising a locking pin having a cylindrical head and having spaced annular grooves in the surface with the first of said grooves spaced from said cylindrical head, the panel and also the corners of said the folding sections having recesses therein in which the cylindrical head of the pin is adapted to nest, respectively, cylindrical elements on the under surface of the panel, latch pins slidably mounted in said cylindrical elements and springs in said cylindrical elements positioned to urge said latch pins outwardly of the cylindrical elements, said cylindrical elements being positioned whereby the latch pins extend into the annular grooves of the pin thereby providing means for securing the locking pin selectively with the head positioned in the recess of the panel, or in the recesses of the folding sections with the sections nested upon the panel.
