BUTTON-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,080, dated January 1, 1884.

' To all whom, it may concern Be it known thatI, GEORGE W. PRENTIOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of. Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My present invention relates to improvements in that class of button-fasteners which are adapted for attaching buttons to fabrics or other materials without the aid of a settinginstrument, my said invention being designed more particularly as an improvement upon the style of fastener described in the Letters Patent No. 284,978, granted to me under date of September 11, 1883, to which reference may be had for a more thorough understanding of my present improvements, which consist, essentially, of a fastener formed. from wire which is bent into shape so as to provide two side wings and atongue of novel construction ,which constitute the base of the fastener, and said tongue being provided with a central springloop to receive the shankof a button for attaching the same to a fabric or material, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

Inthe accompanying drawings, Figure 1 rep-. resents a perspective view of the complete fastener; Fig. 2, a side view of the same as attached to a button and fabric, and Fig. 3 a rear view thereof, similar letters of reference indicating like parts in the several figures.

In carrying out my improvements the fastener A is formed from a short length of wire, which is first bent together at the center to form the tongue a, and again bent to form the central spring-loop, b, the two projecting ends of the wire being then bent at right angles to said central loop, so as to provide side wings or loops,c, as fully shown in Fig. 1. The tongue a is now flattened out to a thin point and curved upwardly, as shown, while the side wings or loops, 0, are also slightly curvedup at the ends, as fully shown in Fig. 3.

In the operation of attaching a button to a fabric by my improved fastener or connection,

a slot or opening is first made through said fabric, the shank of the button then pushed down through said slot, and the tongue at of the fastener passed through the shank of the button until said shank rests in the central loop, I). The button is now drawn upward, causing the loop I) to spring back between the two side wings, a, the curved ends of said wings and the tongue at fitting closely up into the under surface of the fabric, so as to form a rounded and smooth base upon the under surface of the fabric, as fully shown in Fig. 3.

By means of my improvements I am enabled to furnish an efficient and durable fastener, one that is inexpensive, and admirably adapted for the purpose contemplated, holding the button securely in place and presentinga smooth and rounded surface upon the under side of the fabric or material to which it may be.attached.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described button-fastener, consisting of the tongue (it, provided with the springloop I), and side wings, a, all being formed from a short length of wire, and the ends of said tongue and side wings being curved upwardly, in the manner substantially as and for the purpose specified.
