BIRDCALLING DEVICE Howard E. McMahon, Delafield, Wis.
Application October 30, 1946, Serial No. 706,657
(Cl. 4s 1s0 3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bird calling devices.
The primary feature of this invention is to provide a nozzle including a reed together with a single attaching means for securing said nozzle to a small hollow barrel and for securing the reed in the nozzle.
Another feature of this invention is to provide a bird calling device having an adjustable block situated over the reed carried by the nozzle end of said device, which block upon longitudinal movement on said reed adjusts the flexibility of the reed for various toned calls for birds.
A further feature of this invention is to provide a bird calling device of the character referred to having a spring clamp carried by the nozzle end of said device that is adapted to hold said nozzle end into a barrel.
A still further feature of this invention is to provide a device of this character that is neat and attractive in appearance, efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the de- 1 Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 represents a barrel tapered toward its outer end 6 and having a circular bore 1 through its center, said barrel also being provided with a circumferential groove 8 near its outer end to aid in gripping said barrel.
A nozzle 9 is frictionally fitted in the front end of the barrel and is formed at its inner end with a reed bed Ill of semi-cylindrical formation terminating in a shoulder l I adjacent the front end of the barrel. A groove l2 extends from a point adjacent the rear end l3 of the reed bed In and into a circular bore M in the nozzle, said outer end l5 of said bore being flared to function as a megaphone.
Extending longitudinally over recess 12 is a flexible reed I6 said reed being held on the reed bed over said recess by a block I! that bears against the inner end of the reed, the rear end of the reed bed curving longitudinally downwardly to space the rear end of the reed from the bed and to permit flexing of the reed.
The front end N3 of a longitudinally extending wire spring 19 is embedded in the shoulder ll of the nozzle, said spring having a coil'at 20 to add tension thereto and the spring rearwardly of the coil bears against the block H. The spring bears against the upper face of said block and causes said block to bear against the front end of the reed. Block I! also acts as a fulcrum means for causing the rear end 22 of the spring to bear against the inner surface of bore 7 and hold said nozzle in bore 1 of barrel 5 as clearly illustrated in Figure 1.
The block l1 may be slidably adjusted longitudinally on reed It to adjust the flexibility of said reed.
The nozzle end of said device upon being removed from the barrel the reed will be retained in place by the spring l9 thereby preventing loss of said reed. However, the block and reed may be easily removed by the operators fingers by a slight pulling action.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A bird calling device comprising a barrel, a nozzle fitted in the barrel, said nozzle having a groove in one end, a flexible reed resting on the nozzle and overlying the groove, a block slidable on the nozzle and the reed, and a resilient member carried by the nozzle and yieldingly urging the block against the reed and the reed against the nozzle, said resilient member including a portion yieldingly bearing against the inner wall of said barrel to aid in retaining the nozzle within the barrel.
2. A bird calling device comprising a barrel, a nozzle having a semi-cylindrical end portion received within the barrel, said semi-cylindrical end portion including spaced side edges and a groove between the side edges, a reed overlying the groove and resting upon said side edges, a slidable block disposed transversely of the nozzle 3 and resting upon the reed and said side edges, and means for adjusting the block upon the reed to limit the flexing of the reed.
3. A bird calling device comprising a barrel, a nozzle having a semi-cylindrical end portion received within the barrel, said semi-cylindrical end portion including spaced side edges and a groove between the side edges, a reed overlying the groove and resting upon said side edges, a
slidable block disposed transversely of the nozzle and resting upon the reed and said side edges, a spring arm anchored to the nozzle and yieldingly urging the block against the reed and said side also yieldingly bearing against the inner wall of the barrel to secure the parts in assembled relation.
