UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADDISON A. REEVE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ARTIFICIAL TOY OR EASTER EGG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,534, dated March 28, 1882.
Application filed February 4, 1882. (No model To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADDISON A. REEVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial or Toy Easter- Eggs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart ofthis specification.
Figure 1 is aview of an artificial or toy egg divided transversely and jointed at its lower edge, showing the inclosed bird. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a side view of an egg divided horizontally, showing the young fowl resting therein; and Fig. 4 is a side view of the same, partly broken away to show the bird more clearly.
My invention consistsin an artificial or toy Easter-egg composed of suitable ornamental material, as hereinafter more fully described.
The shell of the egg is represented at A, and may be constructed of any suitable material, such as paper, card-board, leather, or other like substance capable of being cut or molded into the proper form; or a natural eggshell may be employed as the frame of the toy. The frame or shell A may be divided transversely, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which event it is preferably hinged orjointed at (t in any suitable. manner; or the egg may be divided horizontally or longitudinally, as shown in Figs. 3
and 4. The frame or shell A is suitably lined, and has an ornamental covering, B, of paper, silk, satin, or other appropriate material. If desired, suitable ornamental designs may be 0 painted, embroidered, or otherwise attached to this covering. Chenille, silk, or velvet cords b b are provided,by which the eggmay behandled. Within the egg is placed a representation of a young bird or fowl, (l, which consists 5 of a suitable frame havingacoveringof downy material, or may consist entirely of such material.
This article forms a pleasing toy, and may also serve a useful purpose by being employed so as a sachet bag or case.
If desired, the form of egg shown in Figs.
1 and 2 may be provided in the interior with a piece of elastic cord or other device for bolding the parts closely together until separated by the fingers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. As a new article of manufacture, an arti- 6o ficial Easter-egg composed of the frame or shell A and covering B, substantially as speci' lied.
2. In a toy Easter-egg, the combination of the frame or shell A, covering B, and bird 0, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADDISON ALEXANDER REEVE.
