Be it known that I, ART H. KILPATRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have made certain new and useful Improvementsin Toys, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in toys,

.being in the nature of a doll having a head provided in its underside with a seat for the finger, so the `said head can be' manipulated by the forefinfer of the hand, While the second finger and the thumb may be operated within a drapery suspended from the head to represent a dress in such manner as to present the appearance or give the effect ot' arms, which may be caused towipe the face of the doll-head, scratch such head, or otherwise to be operated to cause the `same to present a natural life-like appearance when operated.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as Will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a face view of the invention as in use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the doll-head, having the drapery connected with the head; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the head, the drapery being disconnected. Fig. 4 shows a somewhat different construction.

In carrying out my invention I provide a doll-head A, which may be of any suitable material and design to represent a pleasing or grotesque appearance, as may be desired, with a socket in its under side or neck portion in which the finger of the operator is introduced for the purpose of supporting the head, and I provide in connection with this socket a flexible finger hold or grip by which to grip the finger and hold the doll-head in place. This finger-hold is preferably prolonged within the head, so as to furnish a considerable length of surface to hold the finger, and is preferably made of the specific construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, wherein the finger-hold is in the nat-ure of an elongated tube B, secured at its base B to such head, as shown. In securing the fingenhold it may be secured in place at B and B2 by glue or may be suitably fastened at such points by other means, as may be desired. It will be noticed that my invention thus seeks to provide in connection with the doll-head a fini ger hold or grip to bind upon the finger. It also specifically aims to elongate this ngerhold Within the doll-head and, further, to secure the finger-hold both at its outer and inner'ends to the doll-head, as above described. By preference the linger-hold B when made in the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3 is made of soft rubber, as such material possesses the desired elasticitybetween its ends to grip the fingers of different sizes and also by reason of such elasticity permitsa springy movement of the doll-head when operated by the finger operating upon the elastic Walls of the tubular fingerhold. In securing this spring of the head to increase the life-like appearance ofthe device the finger-hold might be made of fabric, such as elastic webbing, and the same result might be secured to a certain extent by means of a finger-holding tube of soft kid or sheepskin; but because of its practical ladvantages I prefer to employ rubber as the material for use in constructing the finger-hold. It Will also be understood that instead of making the finger-hold B continuous or unbroken in cross-section it might be mademof a number 0f separated strips, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, in which casethe results could be secured, the finger-hold being approximately in the form of a tube in such construcfion, as will be understood from the said Fig. 3. not desire to be limited in the broad features of my invention thereof, as I may fin-d it de'- sirable in practice to provide a fingerhold or grip such as shown in Fig. 4,in which a disk of rubber C is securedgwithin the base-opening in the doll-head A and has at Cf an opening through which the finger may be introduced and whose elastic walls are operated to grip the finger when so introduced. While this construction may be employed as suggested, I prefer the construction as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in which the finger-hold is elongated Within the head of the doll. l

In carrying out my invention the drapery D may be a figured or other handkerchief or sheet of material with the forefinger placed in the center, as indicated in Fig. 3, and inserted with the fabric of the drapery in the finger-hold B, so the thumb at E and the second finger at F may operate, respectively, as the left and right arms of the figure and may be manipulated around the face and head A in such manner as to produce amusing effects. It may, however, be preferred to make the head and drapery to constitute a single complete article, such as indicated in Fig. 2, in which the drapery Gr has a central opening at G', whose Walls are secured to the dollhead surrounding the opening in the base of the latter, so the drapery is permanently connected with the doll-head. This is carried out edectively by securing the fabric G between the base-flange b of the finger-hold B and head of thedoll. In the specific construction shown the tubular finger-hold B is provided with the base-flange l), which is lapped against the doll-head surrounding the baseopening ct therein, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

ln the use of the doll the forefi nger and the thumb and second finger maybe operated independently and jointly to so move the head and the arm portions as to produce very amusing effects. i

It will .be noticed from the foregoing my invention includes, in connection with the doll-head having an opening in its base for the introduction of the finger, ayielding fingerhold, which is preferably laterally yielding and constitutes an elastic device for receiving the finger for manipulating the doll-head.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The toy herein described, comprising the doll-head having an opening in its base and provided with an elastic tubular fingerhold, elongated within the head, and secured at its inner end and at its base to the head, with its walls between said base and end elastic, whereby they may grip the finger and may also permit a springy action in operating the device, substantially as described.

2. The dollhead provided with a baseopening for the introduction of the finger, and with a finger-hold in the form of a tube, elongated Within the head, substantially as set forth.

3. A doll-head provided with a base-opening for the introduction of the finger and with a finger-hold, elongated Within the head, substantially as set forth.

4.. A doll-head provided with a base-opening for the introduction of the finger, and with a finger-hold having a flange for connection with the head surrounding the base-opening therein, substantially as set forth.

5. A doll-head having a base-opening and a tubular finger-hold elongated Within' the doll-head, and secured at both ends thereto, substantially as set forth.

6. A doll-head provided with a yielding ngerdiold to receive the finger for manipulating the head, substantially as set forth.

7. A doll-head provided with an opening for the introduction of the finger, and with means to bind or grip the finger, substantially as set forth.

S. A toy, comprising a doll-head, having an opening for the introduction of the finger, and a finger hold or grip within the head, substantially as set forth.

9. The doll-head provided with an opening for the introduction of the finger, and with a laterally-yielding finger-hold, substantially as set forth.

l0. A doll-head provided with a laterallyyielding finger-hold,substantially as set forth.

11. A doll-head provided at its base with a finger-hold, and having a drapery also connected with it at its base, substantially as set forth.

12. A toy, comprising a doll-head, having a finger-hold, and a drapery for manipulation in connection with said dol1head,vsub stantially as set forth.

13. A doll-head provided with an opening for the introduction of the finger and With a finger-hold in the form of a tube, elongated Within the doll-head, and having its Walls arranged to yield laterally, substantially as set forth. l

1i. The doll-head having a base-opening, and a finger-hold provided at its inner end with a base-fiange secured to the head surrounding its base-opening, the finger-hold being also secured at its inner end to the dollhead, substantially as set forth.

15. A toy comprising a doll-head, having a base-opening and a tube of soft rubber, elongated within the doll-head, and secured thereto, and adapted to operate as a fingerhold, substantially as set forth.
