The reel I0 is of metal The apertures 4I and 42 are concentric with reconstruction and may be usedto support cable or spect to the axis of the drum and are adapted other strand material wound thereon. The drum 50 to receive a short length of pipe 44, which is Il is made from a metal sheet cut vto a. prede- Welded to the channel members 29 and 30 and termined size and formedV into cylindrical shape forms' a bearing member for a rod or other suitwith its ends abutting and welded together, as able supporting member on which the reel may indicated at I5. Y be mounted for rotation.
Each of the reel heads I2 and I3 comprises 55 It will be seen that the preferred embodiment shaped members are secured to each other and to the drum II by a continuous weld at their exposed lines of juncture and the reel is provided` with hollow reinforced cross members of rectangular cross section, which are provided with tubular bearing members coaxial with the reel.
The rim portion of the reel headoformed by the annular anges 22 and 23 may be further strengthened by the addition of a reinforcing ringV discs l'l and I8 may be assembled to form a reel head as previously described.
`In the embodiments of the reel heads illustrated im Figs. 5, 6 and '1, the discs In, Hs and 2|1,2|a,
corresponding to the discs I'I and I8 of the heads I2 and I3, are provided with curved outer peripheral flanges instead of flat flanges,V as disclosed in the preferred embodiment. The flanges v48 and 49 (Fig. 6) of the annular discs III and II8, re-
spectively, are formed to curve outwardly from the plane of the discs on a radius equal to onehalf the distance between the discs with the edges thereof engaging in abutting relation. The
flanges 48 and 49 of the discs II'I and llare.
welded together where their edges meet toY form ,a continuous Weld 50 and the curved flanges form an annular rim having a rounded lor semi-circular cross section at its periphery.
` An annular member or reinforcing ring 52 (Fig. `5) may be inserted Within the head Yduring its fabrication and in engagement with the flanges 48 and 49 and the edges of the flanges 48 and 49 may be bonded together and tothe reinforcing ring 52 by a continuous weld 53.
The discs 2II and 218 (Fig. 7) of the reel head may be provided with curved outer peripheral flanges 55 and 56, which, after the discs are assembled, have an overlapping or telescoping relation and may be bonded'together by a continuous Weld 51. i
Although various embodiments of the rim for 4the reel head have been disclosed, the reel is characterized by having a metal drum with reel heads welded to each` end thereof comprising spaced parallel annular discs with inner and outer pe-f ripheral flanges contacting and welded to each other.
What is claimed is:
1. A reel comprising a drum and heads on said drum, each of said heads comprising a pair of similarly formed annular sheets of channelshaped cross section in abutting relation and Welded together at their lines of juncture to provide inner and outer parallel walls.
2. A reel comprising a drum and heads welded to the periphery of thedrum at its ends, each of said heads comprising apair of sheets of metal of annular shape formed to dene annular channels with inner and outer peripheral anges extending equal distances perpendicularly from the web portion of each channel and with the chan- Vnels open one to the other with their respective flanges engaging each other and welded together at their lines of -`iuncture.
3. Areelcomprising a drum and annular hollow heads welded to the drum at each end thereof, each of said heads comprising a pair of similarly formed annular discs arranged in spaced and parallel relation one to the other and having inner and outer cylindrical peripheral flanges extending therefrom and engaging and welded to each other, cross members secured to the inner periphery of the drum at eachend thereof, each of said crossmembers comprising a pair of aligned apertured channelshaped members nested and bonded together to form a rectangular cross section, and atubular sleeve member bonded thereto Within the apertures in the cross members.
4. A reel comprising a drum and annular hollow heads welded to the drum at'each end thereof, each of said heads comprising a pair of similarly formed annular discs arranged in spaced and .parallel relation one to the other and having inner lperiphery of thedrum at each end thereof, each of said cross members' comprising a pair of aligned apertured channel-shaped members nested and vbonded together to form a rectangular cross section.
