9 Claims.
This invention relates to a reel or spool; and has for one of its objects the provision of a seamless juncture at the usual right angular corner between the barrel and the head.
' Another object of the invention is the'provision of a reel or spool having head and barrel portions and in which small wires will not become caught when wound on the reel.
Another object of the invention is the reinforcement of the head and at the same time providing a central tube supporting part.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features .of construction, as will be more fully described, and
l particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the use of reels or spools, particularly where wires of small diameters are wound thereon, it is desirable that there be no seam or joint in which any small wire can lodge and be jammed; and in order that this lmay be avoided, we have provided an opening in the head and turned inwardly about this opening a flange which has a diameter on its outer surface of substantially that of the 40 diameter of the barrel of the reel or spool. We
have then deflected the stock of one of the meeting edges of the -flange or barrel or in some way reduced its thickness or the thickness of both of the meeting edges so that they will t one over 45 the otherin a telescoping relation.` These parts are then welded, which weld will ll up the seam or any recess at the joint between the two so as to provide a smooth outer surface from the head along the barrel with no joint at the bend or 50 rounded generally right angular relation of the parts; and the following is a more detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention, illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished:

With reference to the drawing, Ill designates the barrel or body of the spool or reel which is of tubular stock or formed of sheet stock bent into cylindrical shape with its opposite edges secured together by welding. The heads are designated generally I I and are of identical construction. Each consists of al circular disc I2 stiffened at its periphery by rolling as at I3 outwardly so as to leave a smooth inner surface I4. The head is provided with an opening I5 centrally'thereof and the stock about this opening is turned inwardly 10 to. provide a flange I6 of such a size that its outer surface I'I will be substantially of the same diameter as the outer diameter of the barrel or body Ill. This flange extends at right angles to the' head and isv rounded at the juncture, as illustrated '15 in the drawing, so that no seam or joint is formed.l at its generally right angular formation. At a point spaced from the juncture of the right angular portions, the marginal edge I 8 of the flange is deflected as at I9 to provide a step so 20 that the edge I9 and the stock thereabout will be of a smaller diameter than that of the portion` I6 of the ange adjacent the head. The extension of this step| inwardly will be substantially the thickness of the end of the stock 20 of the body I0 25 so that the edge or end of this body will slide over this inwardly stepped part, as illustrated in Figures 2, 3 and 4, in a telescopingfashion and will there be secured in the telescoped overlapping relation by welding. The weld 2| also fills the 30 space between the end of the body I9 and the step I 9 so as to form a smooth/outer surface with the surface I6 of the barrel. In this manner no seam or joint is formed in this spool or reel, at the right angular juncture of the head and the barrel as is usual, and wires or threads of small diameters will therefore not wedge or catch in any part of the structure.
In Figures 2, 3, and 4 we have illustrated the edge of the flange as being deflected inwardly to 40 form the step at I9. In some cases, however, as in Figure 5, -the marginal edge 23 at the end of the barrel II), is deflected inwardly to form the step and the welding material 24 is filled in between the end of the flange and the deected portion 25 which forms the step. In other cases, as is shown in Figure 6, the end of the'barrel I 9 has been machined out as 'illustrated at 26 so as to receive the end of the ange, and in still other cases, as shown in Figure 7, both the end of the ange'21 and the end of the barrel at 28 may be machined so that one will overlap the other, which will be the case where both are of the same thickness and machining is to be done; while in Figure 8, We have shown a still different form. of f providing a step support which is that of utilizing a reinforcing plate of the' head which will be described.
In order that the disc I2 may be reinforced and at the same time provide a support for the central tubular member designated 30, 'we have provided as a part of the head unit a plate 3| which is welded to the outer surface of the head portion l2 as at 34 and'35 to in some cases span the opening l5 therein. This plate is suitably provided with holes 32, while ears 33 are sheared from the stock thereof so as to engage the `shoulder or inner surface of the flange I6 and centralize the plate with reference to the other part of the head.
'Ihis plate is provided with an opening and inwardly turned flange 36 to receive the central tubular member which is welded' thereto as at 31. e
As shown in Figure 4, in some instances instead 20 of having the reinforcing plate of the head unit lapping over the outer surface of thelhead portion l2, the plate 40 may be set into the opening I5 to engage the shoulder at or about .the beginning of the flange. While this plate is deected outwardly as at 4| and provided with aan opening to receive the barrel member 3i)l with its edge rolled inwardly to provide a shortiange 42 about the opening to be welded as at 43.
In another case, as shown in Figure 8, the
supporting plate 45 of the head unit is cupped 40 inwardly drawn plate supports the tube 30 in some desired manner, such as above described. The parts of the head unit are welded together and then the head to the barrel in all forms.
` The foregoing description is directed towards 45 the method and construction illustrated, butwe desire it to be understood that we reserve the privilege of resorting to al1-the equivalent changes to which the construction and method are susceptible, the invention being dened and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. A reel or spool comprising a sheet metal barrel, a circular head having a. central opening with an annular iiange about said opening formed from the stock of`said head, said flange having an outer diameter adjacent said head substantially equal to that of the outer diameter of the barrel and of a relatively small axial extent compared to said barrel, the end portions of said barrel and-flange being in adjacency with one of said end portions being of smaller diameter thanthe other and with the other end portion extending thereover, and welding material to vsecure said overlapping parts together at the junc- 55' tion of the outer surfaces of said overlapping parts 2. A reelor spoolcomprising aisheet metal barrel, a circular head having a central opening with an annular ange formed about said opening from the stock of the head, said ange having a diameter'adjacent said head substantially equal to that of the barrel and of a relatively small axial extent compared to said barrel, the end portions of said barrel and ange being'in .Igadiacencyzi'withpne of'said end portions beingr reduced in diameter providing a shoulder, the other end portion extending over the reduced portion with its end spaced from said shoulder,
l and welding material between said shoulder and end to secure said overlapping parts together and ll the space. e
3. A. reel or spool comprising a sheet metal barrel, a circular head having a central opening with an annular flange formed about said opening from the stock of the head, said flange having a diameter adjacent said head substantially equal to that of the barrel and of a relatively small axial extent compared to said barrel, the edge portion of said flange being reduced in diameter with the end portion of the barrel extending thereover, and welding material to secure said parts in overlapping relation and iill any cavities in the outer surface at the junction of the edge of the barrel and the shoulder on the ange formed by the reduced portion.
4. A reel or spool comprising a sheet metal barrel, a circular head having a central opening with an integral iiange, means for securing said flange to said barrel, a reinforcing plate spanning said opening and having inward projections raised on the inner surface thereof to extend into said opening and engage the walls thereof to center the plate with reference to said head.
5. A reel or spool comprising a sheet metal barrel, a circular head having a central opening with an integral flange. means for securing said flange to said barrel, a reinforcing plate spanning said opening and having inward projections raised onA the inner surfacethereof to extend into said opening and'engage the walls thereof to center the plate with reference to said head, said plate being itself provided with a central opening in which a tubular member is mounted.
6. A reel -or spool comprising a sheet metal barrel, a circular head having a central opening, a iiange about said opening integral with said head, the edges of )said barrel and ilange'being in adiacency, one of said edges being reduced in diameter sufficiently to permit the other edge to extend thereover, and welding material to secure said overlapping parts together, a reinforcing'plate spanning said opening and having inward' projections raised on the inner surface thereof to extend into said opening and engage the walls thereof to centerl the plate with reference to said head.
7. A reel or spool comprising a sheet metal barrel, a circular head having a central opening, a ange about said opening integral with said head, the edges of said barrel and flange bein! in adjacency, one of. said edges being reduced in diameter sufficiently to permit the other edge to extend thereover, and welding material to secure said overlapping parts together, a reinforcing plate spanning said opening and having inward projections raised on the ixiner surface thereof to extend into said opening and engage the walls thereof to center the plate with reference to said head, said plate being itself provided with a central opening in which a tubular member is mounted.
8. A reel or spool comprising a sheet metal barrel, a circular head unit lat the end thereof i having an annular flange formed from the stock `of said head unit, said ange having an outer diameter adjacent said head substantially equal to the outer diameter ofthe barrel and of a relativelysmall axial extent compared to said barrel, 'and an annular centering portion also formed from the' stock of said head unit to extend Within the end of the barrel that this end of the barrel may overlap said annular portion to center the barrel, said overlapping parts being held together in xed relation by welding.
9. A reel or spool comprising a sheet metal barrel, a circular head unit having a central opening with the portion about said opening formed of two plies, one of saidplies having an annular ange about said opening formed from the stock of said ply, said ange having an outer diameter equal to the outer diameter of the barrel and of a relatively small axial extent compared to said barrel, the end portions of said barrel and ange being in substantially abutting relation, the other ply having an annularflange formed from the stock of the other ply of said head unit and within and reinforcing the first .i
said iiange and extending inwardly beyond the first said ange and within the end portion of said barrel whereby said barrel overlaps said reinforcing flange, said plies and overlapping parts being held together in fixed relation by welding.
