An object of the invention resides in providing a door closer in which the operating parts are protected and in which injury .to the user is entirelylprevented.
Another object of the invention resides in constructing said lever U-shaped in form and channel-shaped in cross section to provide spaced flanges with a web connecting said flanges and situated at the outermost portion of the lever.
Astill further object of the invention resides in providing a door closer in which an opening is formed in the web-of the lever, said opening leaving asportion atthe-end of the web intact to provide a cross bar to which a spring anchored to the case may be attached.
.A feature of the invention resides in arranging the spring to operate in the opening in the lever.
Another object of the invention resides in constructing :theoutermost edges of the flanges at the locality of the opening in said web with notches adapted to engage studs extending inwardly from the side walls of the case and in further arranging said cross bar so that the spring, in addition to urging the closing arm K into closingposition, holds the lever in engagement with said studs.
Another object of the invention resides in-constructing the case with a tongue disposed at the open end thereof through which the lever extends, said tongue being disposed within the opening in said lever.

Since the construction and operation of swing ing doors is well known in the artya complete door-and frame have not'been shown in the draw- I ings, but only so much thereof as is necessary to illustrate the application-of my invention thereto. For this purpose, 1. have shown'a door frame It comprising'a jamb i l and a casing I2 connected thereto and offset with relation to the jamb to form arabbet ii. The :flanges .21 and. 28 extend throughout both 3 of the arms 25 and 26 and are spaced from one another throughout their extent. Between the flanges 21 and 28 of the arm 26 is disposed a roller 3| which is rotatably mounted on a pintle 32 extending through and secured to said flanges. In like manner, a roller 33 is disposed between the flanges 21 and 28 of arm 25 and is rotatably mounted on a pintle 34 extending through and secured to the said flanges. The roller 33 serves as a trip roller for moving the lever 26 into operating position, while the roller 3| serves as a closing roller for engaging the door and moving the same into closing position as will be presently described in detail.
In the web 29 of lever 33 is formed an opening 35 which extends up to the flanges 21 and 23, leaving the outermost edges 36 of the flanges exposed. The said opening falls short of the end of the flange at the arm 35, leaving a portion 31 of said flange intact, which is bent inwardly to form a cross-bar disposed substantially at the interior edges of the flanges 21 and 28. In the flanges 21 and 28 are formed notches 38 which are adapted to engage studs 39 attached to and extending inwardly from the inner surfaces of the walls It and H of case 20. These notches extend through the edges 36 of the flanges 21 and 28 and permit of application of the lever to the studs 39 by movement of the lever inwardly into the case through the open forward portion of the same.
The lever 30 is held in engagement with the studs 39 by means of a tension coil spring 4| which is formed at its ends with hooks 42 and 43. The hook 43 is hooked over the cross bar 31, while the hook 42 is hooked through an eye 40 formed on the end wall l8 of the case, which are extends inwardly into the case. The spring 4| is at all positions of the lever 30 tensioned so that the lever 30 is maintained in engagement with the studs 39. The eye 40 and the cross bar 31 are so located that the spring passes over the center of the studs 39 when the lever moves from one extreme position to the other. In its closing position, the lever is situated as shown in Fig. 2, while in its open position, the said lever, is situated as shown in Fig. 3. In either position, the spring 4| tends to hold the lever in such position.
Issuing from the end wall I 8 of case 20 is a tongue 44. This tongue is spaced from the side walls [6 and I! to leave narrow slots 45 therebetween. The said tongue is concentric with the axis of the studs 39. Tongue 44 extends through the opening 35 in lever 30, as likewise does the spring 4|. It will be noted that the two flanges 21 and 28 of the said lever are situated within the slots 45. By means of this construction, the spring 4|, the studs 39 and the interior mechanism of the device is closed by the tongue 44, while the lever is free to swing from one position to the other.
The operation of the invention is as follows: When the closer is in open position, the flanges 27 and 28 of lever 30 engage the upper end of the end wall l8 within the slots 45. This limits the movement produced by the spring 4| and positions the lever 30 so that the trip roller 33 is in the path of movement of the door l4. When the door is swung toward closing position, the door engages this roller and swings the lever 30 in a clockwise direction, causing the said roller to recede within the case 20. As the leverswings, the closing roller 3| is brought into engagement with the door. When the spring 4| passes dead center, the said spring urges the closing lever into closing position, which, likewise, forces the door into 4 its closing position. When the door is opened, the reverse movement of the lever takes place.
The advantages of my invention are manifest. The device is extremely simple in construction and may be manufactured at a nominal cost. Certain of the operating parts are enclosed, whereby the same are protected. The spring is guarded so that injury to the user can not occur. The device is neat and attractive in appearance.
Changes in the specific form of my invention, as herein described, may :be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A door closer comprising a case having spaced side walls, a lever having a trip arm and a closing arm, said lever being partly disposed between said walls with the closing arm extending outwardly beyond said walls, pivot means between said side walls and lever, said lever being channel-shaped in cross section and having spaced flanges and a web connecting said flanges, said web having an opening therein, spring means acting between said case and lever for urging the closer into closing position and a tongue on said case closing the end of the case through which said lever extends, said tongue lying within the opening in said web.
2. A door closer comprising a case having spaced side walls, a lever having a trip arm and a closing arm, said lever being partly disposed between said walls with .the closing arm extending outwardly beyond said walls, pivot means between said side walls and lever, said lever being channel-shaped in cross section and having spaced flanges and a web connecting said flanges, said web having an opening therein, spring means acting between said case and lever for urging the closer into closing position, said spring means operating in said opening and a tongue on said case closingrthe end of the case through which said lever extends, saidtongue lying within the opening in said web and forming a guard overlying said spring means.
3. A door closer comprising a case having spaced side walls, a lever having a trip arm and a closing arm and partly disposed between said walls, said lever being U-shaped in form and channel-shaped in cross section and provided with spaced flanges and a web connecting said flanges, said web lying along the outermost portion of said lever, said web having an opening therein, notches in said opening facing outwardly of said lever, studs on said walls adapted to be engaged within said notches and a spring connected to said case and to said lever, said spring-retaining said studsin engagement within the notches of the lever and serving to urge the closer arm into closing position.
4. A door closer comprising a case having spaced side walls, a lever having a trip arm and a closing arm and partly disposed between said walls, said lever being u-shaped in form and channel-shaped in cross section and provided with spaced flanges and a web connecting said flanges, said web lying along the outermost portion of said leverJsaid web having an opening therein, said opening extending up to said flanges to expose the outermost edges thereof and leaving a portion of the web adjacent the end of the trip arm intact to form a cross bar extending across said flanges, notches in said flanges at the opening facing outwardly of said lever, studs on said walls adapted to be engaged within said notches and a spring connected to said case and to said cross bar, said spring operating between said studs and within said opening and acting to urge the closing arm into closing position, said spring retaining said lever in engagement with said studs.

A door closer comprising a case having spaced side walls, a lever having a trip arm and a closing arm, said lever being partly disposed between said Walls with the closing arm extending outwardly beyond said walls, pivot means between said side walls and lever, said lever being channel-shaped in cross section and having spaced flanges and a web connecting said flanges, said web having an opening therein, spring means acting between said case and lever for urging the closer into closingposition and a tongue on said case closing the end of the case into which said lever extends, said tongue being arcuate in form substantially concentric with the axis of said pivot means and lying within and adjacent the end of the Opening in said web.
6. A door closer comprising a. case having spaced side walls, a back and a base, alever having a trip arm and a closing arm arranged to form a bight therelbetween, said lever being disposed partly between said walls and with the closing arm extending outwardly beyond said walls, pivot means between said side walls and lever, spring means acting between said trip arm and case, said spring means being attached to the trip arm at a locality between the free end thereof and said pivot means and to the back of said case "at a locality-on the side of said pivot means opposite to said base to exclude the operation of said spring from the b ight of said lever.
7. A door closer comprising a case having spaced side walls, a lever having a trip arm and a closing arm arranged to form a bight 'therebet ween, said lever being disposed partly between said side walls and with an inner portion of the trip arm operating entirely within said case, pivot meansbetween said side walls and lever, spring means between said trip arm and case, said spring being attached at one end to said inner portion of the trip arm at a locality between the outer end of said trip arm and said pivot means, and at its other end to said case at a locality outwardly from said pivot means and being confined wholly within said case at all positions of said lever.
