INVISIBLE DOOR-CLOSING- STRAP.
Specification of'Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
Application fi led January 20, 1920. Serial No. 352,836.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnrH CARTER, a subject of the King of England, residing at in the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invisible Door- Closing Straps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in invisible straps for doors of automobiles, and consists in the provision of a metallic strap having one end fastened to a door and the other having a loose sliding movement within the body of a car, and means provided for regulating the outer throw of the door.
The invention comprises various other details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the interior of the car, showing the application of my invention, parts being broken away to better illustrate the device.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the door partially open.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of a modified form of a member through which the strap has a sliding movement, and
Fig. 5 is a detail view showing a modified the strap to a plate.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numerals:
1 designates the body of a car, and 2 a door, hinged as at 3 thereto, and 5 designates astrap of metal which is fastened at 6 to the door and passes through the slot of a bracket formed as an angle plate 4, which is fastened to the inner surface of the body of the car. One end of the strap is bent or overlapped upon itself forming a rolled rear edge 5, and the portions thg bent are fasline 2-2 of tened together by a rivet 7, or other suitable means. Said body portion of the car has an open space or recess 2', in which one end of the strap has a play back and forth, incident to the opening and closing of the door, movement in one direction of the strap being limited by the edge of the overlapping portion contacting with the bracket 4 within said recess 2.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings I have shown a U-shaped plate 8 having an elongated slot 9 for the reception of the strap 10, and is a modified form of the bracket or plate 4., and is adapted to be secured to the car in the same manner as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The strap 10, which is of metal, is bent upon itself, forming a roll 10, and 11 is a rivet for holding the overlapping portions together.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings, I have shown a plate 12 which is adapted to be fastened to the door, and to which oneend of the strap-13 is fastened by a portion thereof being passed through the plate 12 and bent upon itself and riveted as shown at 14.
By the provision of an invisible strap embodying the features of my invention, it will be noted that a simple and efficient means is provided whereby no part of the strap will be visible excepting as the door is opened, and as the door is closed, the strap will move back into the space 21. Said strap is made of.metal, is durable, and affords means for dispensing with the usual straps of fabric employed for this purpose. and which, when the door is closed, will hang loosely within the car. i
The resilient metal strap functions to antomatically return the door to closed position after opening thereof, as is obvious.
Vhat I claim to be new is:
The combination with an automobile and a door hinged thereto, the portion of said automobile adjacent the hinged end of said door being provided with a recess, and said door with a complemental recess, of a re silient, metallic, door-closing strap secured within said door recess, and slidably projecting'into said automobile recess, and a bracket secured within and concealed by said automobile recess, and through which signature.
J OSEPH- CARTER.
