FOOT-REST FOR ROCKING-CHAIRS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,570, dated July 19, 1881.

Application filed March 9,1881. (Model) I To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, L. K. DUTTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Rests for Rocking-Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there- Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of my inventiomshowin g it attached to a rocking-chair. Fig. 2 is aside elevation on an enlargedscale, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation.

The present invention has relation to that class of footrests provided with rollers or wheels and an extensible rod for connecting them under and to the seats of rocking-chairs.

The foot-board in this class of foot-rests has heretofore been rigidly attached to the other devices, and thus was prevented from accommodating itself to the motion given to the feet while rocking. p

The object of my invention is to obviate this difficulty and at the same time improve the general construction of the device.

To this end my invention consists in a footrest for attachment to rockingchairs provided with rollers or wheels resting upon the floor, and having the foot-board pivoted longitudinally, and also in the special details of construction, as hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Arepresents the foot-board, having its top surface upholstored or carpeted, as may suit the taste of the user. This foot-board A is pivoted longitudinally to wire orother suitable frames B, which have journaled thereto rollers or wheels a. The rollers or wheels a are grooved around their periphery to retain rubber or other elastic bands I), so as to prevent the rollers or wheels from moving 'too easily over the carpet, the rubber also preventing to some extent the wearing of the carpet.

To the frames B are connected the ends of a cross-bar, c, which has projecting from it a rod, (1. This rod d enters the end of an arm, 0,' and is held therein by a set-screw, e, which construction admits of the distance between the foot-board and chair-seat being lengthened or shortened, as circumstances may require.

To the upper end of the'arm O is a hook, g, for attachment in an eyebolt or staple, h, secured under and to the seat of a rockingchair, D.

The foot-board A being pivoted it may thus oscillate on its pivot to correspond to the rocking motion of the chair, and may be placed in a position parallel to the bar 0 to serve as a leg-rest.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A foot-rest for attachment to rockingchairs, consisting of a rod for connection with the chair, wheels or rollers for supporting the foot-rest on the floor, and a foot-board and supporting-frame, the foot-board being loosely pivoted longitudinally to said frame, the parts being combined and arranged substantially as i set forth. 7

2. The frames B and wheels or rollers a, in combination with the longitudinally-pivoted foot-board A, cross-bar 0, rod (1, arm 0, and set-screw e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
