APPARATUS FOR THE TREATMENT OF UTERINE DlSPLACEMENT AND HERNIA.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,368, dated April 10, 1883. Application filed January 18, 1883. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, HENRY HANNONDE PEW, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Maquoketa, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for the Treatment of Uterine Displacement and Hernia, of which the following is a specification, to wit:

This invention relates to apparatus for the treatment of uterine displacement and hernia and it consists of a chair or seat pivoted upon a spring or springs, and adapted to be inclined at any desired angle, and given a peculiar backward and forward and at-the same time a vertical motion, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described.

In order to enable others skilledin the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the invention in an upright position. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the ratchet-bars and their holding-springs; and Fig.3, a side view, showing the device in a reclining position.

' A represents a square or rectangular frame provided with suitable legs or feet, A, which forms the base of my chair. Upon the sides of this frame are clamped two springs, B, by clamps or clips b b, rendering the lower ends of these springs adjustable forward or backward, as-may be found necessary, to properly balance the chair upon its base. The springs Bare carried forward a short distance, and then bent back upon themselves in ala-rge semicircle, as seen at b, and the upper ends are continued on in rear of a vertical line through the center of this curve and given a slight reverse curve upward, as seen at N, and

terminate in eyes b in which is journaled a cross-bar or round, 0, upon which the seat or chair 0 is secured. The chair or seat 0 is made of any form found most desirable or easiest for the patient, and suitably upholstered or cushioned, as represented in the drawings. To the forward end of the chair-seat O are pivoted the links or bars 0, provided with suitable pins, c, and to their lower ends is pivoted the foot-rest C The bars 0 are given any angle with respect to the bed or body of the chair by means of bars D, pivoted to the seat 0, and provided with a series of open slots, 01, having enlarged inner ends, as represented, which are engaged with the pins 0,- and the foot-rest O is given any angle with reference to the pivoted supporting bars by similar ratchet-bars, D, which are also adapted to engage with the pins c. Both these ratchet-bars D D are provided with springs d, which clasp the bars and-hold them always from being disengaged from the pins. The forward end of the seat 0 is connected to the adjacent end of the base A by a strap, E, provided with a buckle, e, for adjustment, and the 'rear ends of the seat and base are provided with a similar strap and buckle, E e, by means of which the seat may beheld firmly from tipping too far in either direction, and also held at any angle of inclination which may be deemed desirable with reference to the particular patient under treatment. For convenience of the operator the foot-rest is provided with suitable handles, f f.

The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The patient is placed in the chair when in the position represented by Fig. 1, and the seat is then inclined to any point-as, for instance, to the position seen in Fig. 2-where it is held by the strap E. The foot and leg rests are then properly adjusted, and the attendant, taking hold of either end of the seat, gives it a backward and forward motion. The bending of the supporting-springs B B under this motion, and the weight of the patient, also gives the chair an up and down movement, this combined motion, more or less powerfully applied, being just what isrequired to reduce the uterine displacement or hernia and restore the displaced parts to their normal condition. It will readily be seen that this peculiar motion is more fully developed by the extension of the upper ends of the supporting-springs beyond the vertical radius of their curve and the slight reverse curve given to this extension, which'prevents it bending too much and throws most of the action upon the large semicircular curve b.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1 1. In an apparatus for the treatment of uterine displacement and hernia, the base A, provided with springs B, having a semicircular curve, 1;, with their upper ends extended beyond the vertical radius of this curve in a slight reverse curve, 11 terminating in an eye, W, in combination with the seat 0, pivoted upon the bar or round 0, and provided with straps or adjusting devices E E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. a

2. In an apparatus for the treatment of uterine displacement or hernia, consisting essentially of the base A, springs B 13, formed as herein described, and adjustably secured to the base, seat (J, pivoted on the upper ends of the springs B, straps E E, for adjusting the seat as desired, and the adjustable foot and leg rests 0 0 with their notched braces D D, all combined, constructed, and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
