Description

(ModeL) A. A. ARMI'TAGE. A
GAR COUPLING.
No. 244,366. Patented July 19, 1881..
Ira/@1202.-
mllll UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT A. ARMITAGE, OF KENESAW, NEBRASKA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 244,366, dated July 19, 1881.
Application filed May 25, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. ARM'ITAGE, of Kenesaw, in the county of Adams and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved car-coupling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a front View.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to automatic couplings for railroad-cars; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which willbe hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the draw-head of a railroad-car, which is provided with the usual mouth or opening, B, to receive the link, and with a longitudinal recess, (3, containing a spring,'D, which operates to force in a forward direction a slide, E, fitted in said recess, and having its forward movement limited by means of a vertical pin, or in any suitable well-known manner. The upper end of the slide E is provided with a forward-projecting flange, F, which, when the said slide is pushed forward by the action of the spring, passes under the vertical opening G, in the draw-head in which the coupling-pin H is adj usted, thus enabling said coupling-pin to be temporarilysupported upon the said slide E. It is evident that when the coupling-link, which is denoted by I, enters the draw-head the slide E is pushed back against the tension of the spring, thus permitting the pin to drop and complete the coupling.
To the sides of the draw-head are pivoted two L-shaped levers, J J, the front ends of which are connected by avertical link, K, just in front of the mouth of the draw-head. The
rear or lower ends of said levers are connected by a cross-bar, L, having an arm M, extending rearwardly under the draw-head, and provided with a horizontal slot, N, extending through the greater part of its length.
0 is a rock-shaft, pivoted in any suitable bearings under the car, and having a loop or bail, P, working in the slot N, and provided, if necessary, with an ordinary friction-roller. The ends of rock-shaft O are provided with upward-projecting levers Q, capable of being operated from either side or from the top of the car.
The operation of thisinvention will be readily understood.
When a link has been adjusted in the drawhead of a car, the rock-shaft 0 may be readily operated so as to raise the front end of said link or adjust it so as to enter readily into the draw-head of the next car, in which, owing to the construction above described, it is automatically coupled.
'This invention is simple, convenient, durable, and easily operated.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In an automatic car-coupling, the combination, with the draw-head, of the L-shaped levers J, having vertical link K, and cross-bar 'L, provided with a rearward-extending arm and suitable operating-levers, as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the draw-l1ead,havin g L-shaped levers J, provided with the vertical link K, and cross-bar L, having rearwardextending slotted arm M, of the rock-shaft 0, having bail P, and levers Q, substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT A. ARMITAGE.
