JOHN H. CONN, OF ENGLEIVOOD, ILLINOIS.
CAR-COUPLING.
ESPECEFICAEEON forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,911. dated April 14, 1885.
Application filed January .26, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom, it 11mg concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. CONN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Englewood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Oar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to car-couplings; and it has for its object to provide the common or ordinary draw-head now in general use with an attachment which may be readily applied thereto, and which will serve to support the coupling-pin to render the coupling operating automatic, and which will also serve to support the link in a horizontal position to receive the thrust of the draw-head of the adjacent car, and thus render the coupling of the cars positive.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pivoted or hinged support which may, when necessary, be operated to raise the coupling-link should the attachment within the draw-head fail at any time to support said link in a horizontal position.
A further object of the invention is to provide devices of the character above described which shall be simple in their construction and which may be readily applied.
Vith these ends in view the invention con.- sists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a draw-head equipped with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspec tive view of the pin-support detached.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the draw-head, which is of the ordinary construction, said draw-head having the usual pinopening a.
Upon the upper side of the draw-head adjacent to the pin-opening a is provided an elongated slot or opening, b, in which is pivoted, at the forward end thereof, apin-support,
B. This pinsupport B consists of the weighted body portion 0, having an opening at its upper forward, end for the passage of the pivotal pin or bolt (1, and is provided with an extension, 0, having a plane front face, and forming, in connection with the weighted or body portion 0, a seat, 6. It will be seen that as the pin-support is Weighted at its rear end and is pivoted the tendency of said weighted end will be to hold the extension in a horizon tal position in the draw-head.
D represents a pivoted link raiser or lifter, consisting of an operating handle or lever, f, and the forwardly-extending loop, g, having the upwardly-turned end, said lifter being adapted to be raised to force the link to a horizontal position.
The operation is as follows: The couplingpin, which is of the ordinary construction, is supported upon the forward end of the extension 0, and when the link, carried by the car to be coupled, strikes said extension, it forces the pin-support E rearwardly and allows the pin to drop to engage the link. If the link should drop from a horizontal position, the lifter D can be raised, and its looped end will engage the under side of the link and elevate the same.
It will be seen from the foregoing descrip tion that my improvements are simple, readily and easily applied, eiiective in their operation, and strong and durable.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a car-coupling, the combination, with a draw-head having an elongated slot on its upper side, of an eccentrically-pivoted pin-support, and a pivoted link-raiser comprising the operating lever or handle f, and a forwardlyextending loop, 51, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. CONN;
