EBENEZER HATHAWAY AND THOMAS H. MYERS, OF HUME, ILLINOIS.
CAR -COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,4;08, dated June 29, 1880.
Application filed April 27, 1880.
Toall whom it may concern Be it known that we, EBENEZER HATHA- WAY and THOMAS H. MYERS, of Hum e, in the county of Edgar and-State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Coupler, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a self-coupling coupler, by the use of which the necessity of going between the cars for the purpose of uncoupling will be avoided.
The invention consists, in combination with a draw-head having a vertical mouth or linkopening, of two parallel, or nearly parallel, rods or bars adjusted longitudinally within said draw-head and connected at their lower ends by a cross-bar, the one longitudinal bar or rod having an end projecting through the face of the draw-head for the opposite drawhead to strike against, and below this end, and within the draw-head, a square shoulder, and having its rear end resting on a spring, while the other bar or rod is pivoted at its lower or rear end on the opposite side of the drawhead, and, extending forward, has pivoted in its front end the coupling-pin, that moves transversely across the link-opening, so that when the projecting end of the first-mentioned bar is pushed inward the coupling-pin is thereby thrown through the coupling-link, and so that when the coupling-pin is withdrawn from the link the end of the first-mentioned bar again projects from the face of the draw-head; and it further consists of a spring-actuated lever adjusted on the top of the draw-head and operating to hold the coupling-pin in the link or to release it therefrom.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device coupled. Fig. 2 is afront elevation of a drawhead with the device attached. Fig. 3 is a plan of the device with top plates of drawhea-ds removed to exhibit the interior parts.
(No model.)
hole a, and on the said bar B, immediately inside of the face of the draw-head A, a square shoulder, o, is formed. The rear or inner end of said barB passes through an end of acrossbar, 0, and below or rearward of this bar 0 is encircled by and rests in a spiral spring, D, which spring D is secured about a stud, c, fixed in the rear end of the draw-head A. This cross-bar O is rigidly connected with the lower end of the bar E, at right angles thereto, or forms part of the same, and at their point of junction said bars O and E are pivoted by a pin, d, within the said draw-head A, and the bar E extends parallel with the bar B forward nearly to the front of the draw-head A, and has pivoted in its forked end the coupling-pin F, that extends transversely across the draw-head parallel with the cross-bar 0.
Within the head of the draw-head A, and directly in rear of the link-opening a, is fixed a box, G, that serves as a stop to prevent the link H from entering too far into the said draw-head A when coupling, and also to prevent an excessive lateral movement of said link. Two opposite side openings, 9 g, are formed in said box G, to admit of the passage of the coupling-pin F.
K is a right-angled lug fastened on the head of the draw-head A, and having a forked end extending horizontally over a side of the same, in which forked end the vertical lever L is pivoted. The other end of this lug K extends vertically upward and supports a horizontal stud, h, that is directed toward the lever L and carries the encircling-spring M, which presses against said lever L and operates it. The long arm of this lever L extends upward within reach of the brakeman, and can have a cross-bar, as indicated at N, attached to it for convenience of operating from the sides of the cars, and the short arm of the said lever L, extending downward, is bent inward at right angles and held against the shoulder o of the bar B.
The coupling-link H is straight on one edge (the upper) and curved or rounding on the opposite edge, the curve enabling the said link to enter the draw-head more easily, and the straight edge preventing the said link H from passage of the end of the actuating-bar B. drooping.
The forward end, b, of said bar B rests in this On the left, in Fig. 3, the link H is shown held in a draw-head, A, in position for coupling. As this draw-head approaches the opposite or right-hand draw-head the link H enters the mouth a of said right-hand drawhead, and the projecting end of the bar B being struck by the approaching draw-head, the said bar B is forced backward, with the effect of moving the bar E on its pivot d, and there by throwing the coupling-pin F through said link H, and simultaneously with this movement the spiral spring M operates to force the short arm of the lever L between the shoulder c of this bar B and the end of the containing draw-head, so as to hold the said bar B retracted, and consequently the connected coupling-pin F in the coupling'link.
To uncouple, the long arm of the lever L is moved inward, with'the efl'ect of withdrawing the short arm of the said lever L from engagement with the shoulder c of the bar B, when instantly the spring D operates to force the end of said bar B forward through the hole a, and at the same time to withdraw the coupling-pin F from the link H, and thus uncouple the cars.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A car-coupler, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of 30 draw-head A, provided with vertical link-opening a and hole a, spring-actuated bar B, with projecting end b and shoulder c, cross-bar C, pivoted bar E, provided with coupling-pin F, gprilng-actuated lever L, and link H, as set 35 ort 2. The combination, with draw-head A, having the link-opening a and hole a, of the bar B, having an end, b, in hole a, and the shoulder 0, the bar 0, held on bar B by the spring 0 D, the bar E, pivoted to bar 0 at one end and having on the other a vertical pin, F, and the box G, having hole g, as shown and described.
3. In a car-coupler, the combination, with the spring-actuated bars B O E and coupling- 5 pin F, of the spring-actuated lever L, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a car-coupler, the combination, with the spring-actuated bar B, provided with a shoulder, c, and projecting end b, of the 50 spring-actuated lever L, substantially as herein shown and described.
