SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,729, dated July 5, 1881.
Application filed November 18, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY F. SOHLUETER, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the mechan' ism for operating the feed-shaft or shuttle-arm of a sewing-machine, part of the latter being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a rear-end view of the same, also showing part of the machine Fig. 3 is a plan view of the forked end of the shuttle-arm, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the guide-block for the connecting-rod.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures denote the same parts.
My invention relates to that class of sewingmachines wherein the feed-sh aft is driven from the main shaft by a connecting-rod and eccentrics and the shuttle-arm is oscillated in some manner by the movements of the connectingrod; and it has for its object to simplify and improve the means by which the shuttle-arm is operated.
To this end the invention consists, mainly, in the combination of a bell-crank lever and a vibratory link with the connecting-rod joining the main and feed shafts, the lever being pivoted" at its angle to the frame of the machine and jointed at its lower end to the rear end of the shuttle-arm, and the link being pivoted at one end to the short arm of the lever and at its opposite end to the connecting-rod, the operation being suchthat the connecting-rod transmits its motion to the shuttle-arm to reciprocate the shuttle through the medium of the link.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a part of the frame of a sewing-machine. B is the main or driving shaft, having its bearings in the upper part of the frame. 0 is the feed-shaft, havingits bearings in'the lowerpart of the frame; and D is the connecting-rod, connectin g these two shafts by eccentrics or wrists,

The center of the connecting-rod is slotted or made with a large opening, E, to receive a square guiding block V, F, fitted upon a cross-rod, G, in the upright of the frame, so as to turn freely on such rod when the connecting-rod is operated. The block F serves to guide and steady the connecting-rod in its movements, and is formed with a flange on one side to prevent it from slipping too far through the slot in the connecting-rod, while apin, IL, is inserted in the cross-rod G, outside of the block, to prevent it from slipping out of the slot in the connecting-rod. N is the link by which the short arm of the lever is joined to the connecting-rod, just below the upper eccentric, and by which the motion of the rod is transmitted to the lever. When the machine is in operation the upper pivoted end of the link rises and falls with the connecting-rod, thereby oscillating the bellcrank lever on the cross-rod G and causing its lower end to vibrate to operate the shuttle- 9o arm, as will be fully understood; The connection between the lever and link may be varied or made adjustable to regulate the throw of the shuttle-arm by any suitable means.
