To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. BARRON, citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Machine Looper Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its object to provide a looper mechanism which is simple in construction, compact, and Which shall be noiseless and capable of operation at high speed with a minimum of vibration.
The invention is designed more particularly for embodiment in a double-chainstitch machine of the well known Singer type such as that forming the subject of the United States Patent to Villiam H. Hugg, No. 1,005,645, dated October 10, 1911, although capable of use in other styles of machine employing an endwise and sidewis movable looper.
According to the present improvement, in its preferred form, the looper-carrier sustaining the looper is mounted similarly to that in said patent, and the plural-armed rocker or bell crank, through which operative movements are imparted to the same, is positioned at the front of the machine in advance of the looper-carrier to which it is connected by a short pitman, the lateral arm of such rocker being also connected by a short pitman with a crank upon the front end of the main-shaft. By this means, the long pitmen connected with the two arms of the rocker are replaced by short pitmen and the drive of the looper is taken directly from the main-shaft.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, with the frame partly in section, representing the forward portion of a sewing machine embodying the present improvement, and Fig. 2 a. front end view of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the rocking frame upon which the looper-carrier is mounted, with its actuating means.
The sewing machine base 1 is provided with the usual bearingmembers 2 in which is journaled the main-shaft 3 carrying at its forward end the crank-arm 1 with ball- The shaft 3 carries also near its outer end the eccentric 6.
Sustained within a recess in the base is the bearing pin 7 disposed parallel with the Specification of Letters Patent.

main-shaft and affording a pivotal support for the rocking frame comprising the sleeve 8 fitted upon said pin and the lateral arm 9 terminating in the split bearing boss 10. Journaled within the boss 10 is the fulcrum-pin 11 having one end formed with the head 12 and having secured upon the opposite end the hub 13 of the looper-carrier 14 formed with the usual socket in which is secured by means of the set-screw 15 the shank 16 of the looper whose blade 17 1s disposed in a plane substantially parallel with the mainshaft. The sleeve 8 of the rocking frame has secured thereon the hub 18 of an upwardly extending arm 19 forked at its upper end to embrace the block 20 fitted upon the eccentric 6 by means of which lateral jogging movements imparted to the rocking frame are transmitted through the fulcrum-stud 11 to the looper-carrier and the looper sustained thereby.
The looper-carrier arm 14: has a lateral boss 21 carrying the ball-stud 22 embraced by the strap 23 at one end of the link 2 1 whose opposite end is similarly provided with the strap 25. The strap 25 embraces the ball-stud 26 sustained by the upwardly projecting arm 27 whose split hub 28 is adjustably secured by means of the clampscrews 29 upon the rocking sleeve 30 fitted upon the pivotal pin 31 mounted in the machine frame transversely to the main-shaft. The sleeve 30 has formed thereon the forwardly projecting arm 32 terminating in the ball-stud 33 provided with the axial steady-pin 3 1. The ball-stud 33 is embraced by the strap 35 at one end of the link 36 whose opposite end is formed with the strap 37 embracing the ball-crank-pin 5. The sleeve 30 with its upwardly and laterally extending arms 27 and 32 constitute a plural-armed rocker through which the loop-seizing and shedding movements are imparted to the looper from the main-shaft.
Secured upon the outer face of the link 36 by the screw 38 is an arm 39 forked to embrace the steady-pin 34 to control the position of the link. For a like purpose, the strap 25 of link 2 1 is formed with spaced lugs 25 which loosely embrace the head 26 of a screw tapped into the ball-stud 26.
As will be observed, the rotation of the eccentric 6 with the main-shaft serves to impart the usual lateral jogging movements to the rocking frame 9 19 which are communicated to the looper in its sideWise or needle-avoiding movements; While the 1 tary movements of the crank-pin 5 impart rocking movements to the rocker 9'7 30 32 which are transmitted through the link 2% to the looper-carrier and from it to the looper-blade in endwise or loop-seizing and -shedding movements in cooperation. with the needle 40 mounted in the reciprocating needle-bar 41.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, What I claim herein is In a sewing machine, a looper, a laterally rocking frame, a fulcrum mounted thereon transverse to its axis of movement, a loopercarrier mounted upon said fulcrum, an actuating shaft, :1 ball-crank upon the end of said shaft, an eccentric upon said shaft, an
arm rigidly connected with said frame and operatively engaging said eccentric from which the looper derives its sidewise or needle-avoiding movements, a pluralarmed rocker, a pivotal support therefor disposed transversely to said shaft, a link connection between an arm of said rocker and said looper-carrier and a link connection beti'een another arm of said rocker and said ballcrank from which the looper derives its end Wise or loop-seizing movements.
