FEEDING MECHANISM FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,544, dated July 27, 1880,
Application filed February 26, 1880.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DEXTER W. GooDELL, of Florence, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Mechanisms for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations of devices with the main shaft which actuates the needle-bar, shuttle, and feeder, whereby motion is transmitted from said main shaft to an oscillating and longitudinally-adjustable feed-shaft in a smooth, positive, and easy manner.
It also consists in a connecting-rod of novel construction for transmitting motion from the main shaft to said oscillating and longitudinally-adjustable feed-shaft, in combination with mechanism for actuating the connectingrod from said main shaft.
The accompanying drawings only illustrate so much of a sewing-machine as is necessary to explain myinvention, the remaining portions of the machine not necessarily differing from other shuttle-machines in which the feedshaft, arranged below the bed, is operated by connections with a needle-operating shaft in the arm or goose-neck of the machine.
Figure 1 represents a transverse vertical section through a portion of a sewing-machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents an inverted plan view of such machine. Figs. 3 and 4 represent detail sectional views upon an enlarged scale, illustrating certain parts of the machine. Fig. 5 represents a face view of a portion of the connecting-rod for operating the feed-shaft; and Fig. 6 represents a section thereof on the dotted line 00 m, Fig. 5.

A designates the bed of the machine, and B the fixed arm or goose-neck mounted thereon. O is the main shaft, arranged to work within said arm or goose-neck, and serving to communicate motion to the needle-bar, the shuttle-carrying lever, and the feeding device of the machine. Secured to the shaft U, within the rear upright portion of the arm B, is an eccentric, D, 011 which is fitted a yoke, E,-for
actuating both the feeding device and the shuttle-carryin g lever.
The shuttle-carrying lever F, which is pivoted at a to the under side of the bed A, is
operated by meansof a shuttle-operatin g lever,
a lateral movement to the said feed-bar to feed the cloth forward. The said feed-bar J is supported at f, and the turning of the cam I moves said bar forward against the pressure of a spring, 9.
In order to give the feed-bar J the required vertical movement I employ a slider-bar, K, pivoted at h to an arm, F, extending from the shuttle-carrying lever F, and reciprocated by the oscillation ofthc said shuttle-carrying lever. The said bar K is held up by a support, L, and upon its upper face is an incline, i, acting as a wedge to raise the bar J, as clearly represented in Fig. 3. Upon the end of the shaft H is arranged a crank, M, and N designates a connecting-rod connected to said crank and pivoted at j to the yoke E of the eccentric D.
The turning of the needle-shaft 0 through the medium of the connecting-rodN oscillates the feed-shaft H and causes the cam I to operate the feed-bar J.
As before stated, the cam I is tapered in the direction of the length of the shaft H, and by moving said shaft longitudinally a portion of the cam, having greater or less prominence, is brought in position to act upon the born or arm 6 of the feed-bar J, and the length of the stitch varied as required.
In order to provide for properly adjusting the shaft H longitudinally and holding it in position when adjusted, I employ a clutch-arm, 0, extending from a slide, 0, and having its end forked and fitting in an annular groove, k,
in the hub of the crank M. The slide fits in a hole or socket, Z, in the frame of the machine, and is provided with an internallyscrew-threaded socket, m. as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
P designates an adjusting spindle or screw having a cylindric portion, a, fitting the hole I, and a screw=threaded end, 0, for engaging with said screw-socket m and moving the slide 0, and with it, through the medium of the arm 0, the feed-shaft H, in a longitudinal direction. By turning the head 19 of the adj ustin'g-screw P in either direction the position of the shaft H will be varied.
The longitudinal movement of the shaft H will necessarily throw the connecting-rod N out of line, and to provide for this, and prevent the bearings in the ends of the connecting-rod from heating, I construct said rod with pivoted boxes 1%, the construction of which is clearly shown in Figs. and 6. Each end of the rod is forked, and the boxes R, which are composed of solid blocks, are cut through upon one side of the bearing at s, and are fiat upon opposite sides, and fitted in the forked ends of the connecting-rod, the inner sides of the forks forming bearing-surfaces for the boxes. These boxes are secured Within the forks by pins or screws 73, passing through both the boxes and forks.
When the connecting-rod is out of line the box may turn within the fork, as shown in Fig. 6, so as to remain in line with the journals and prevent the binding of the boxes.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the feed-bar J, provided with a horn or arm, a, the feed-shaft H, mechanism for oscillating said feed-shaft, the clutch-arm O, slide 0, and screw P, for adjusting said shaft longitudinally, the tapercam rigidly fixed to the shaft H, the shuttlecarrying lever F and mechanism for oscillating it, and the slider-bar K, attached to and reciprocated by said lever, all organized and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with an oscillating and longitudinally-adjustable feed-shaft, a crank upon said shaft, a rotating shaft and eccentric for operating said feed-shaft, and a yoke fitted to said eccentric, of a'connecting-rod connecting said yoke and crank, forked at each end, boxes for said connecting-rod which are flat upon opposite sides and are fitted into the forked ends of said rod, the inner surfaces of the forks forming bearing-surfaces for said boxes, and pins or screws for pivoting said boxes in a direction transverse to the said shafts, substantially as specified.
