FRANCIS M. PIPER, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GEORGE L. DRAKE, OF SAME PLACE. i
TRUNK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,556, dated June 7, 1881,
Application tiled March 7, 1881.
To all whom zt may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. PIPER, of Lynn, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Trunks; and I do herebydeclare the same to be described in the following speciiication, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a perspective elevation of' my imro proved trunk with its drawer-covers as closed.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the drawercovers as moved away from the drawer-fronts.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section, and Fig. 4a lougitudinal section, of the trunk.
The nature of my invention is duly set forth in the claim or claims hereinafter presented.
In this trunk the body is provided with one or more drawers, and it also has acover thereto to slide up and down on or within it, the said body, so as to either cover or uncover the front of each drawer.
In the drawings, A denotes ille body of the trunk, which is represented as having within its lower part two drawers, B B, and an opening or mouth, a, on one side ot' the body,
for such drawers to be moved into and out of thebody. There is within the trunk-body, and over the chamber I) thereof, in which such drawers are placed, a narrow space or chamber, c, for reception, when it is raised above the drawers, of a slide or cover, E, placed in front of the'drawers, and so adapted to the body as lo be capable of being moved therein, so as to either cover or uncover the front of each of the drawers B. Such cover may he provided with suitabledevices for fastening` it in either of its positionsthat is, when itis down to cover the front ot' each drawer, or up so as to uncover the same. I
Besides the drawers B B there are in the body two sets of drawers, C C, C C', which are (No model.)
arranged, as shown, over the drawers BB. The body has within it two chambers for receiving the dra :ers C C, C C. The mouths of these chambers are in the opposite ends ofthe body, as shown atff in Fig. 4, one of such mouths being1 represented in Fig. 2. There is in the body of the trunk, and below cach of such mouths, a narrow chamber or space, g, for reception of a sliding cover, h, adapted to the 5o body, so as to be capable of being moved up therein in order to cover the fronts of the drawers. Furthermore, over the sets of end drawers, C C, C C', and in the upper part ot the body, there is a chamber, z', for reception 55 of a drawer, D, the mouth 7c of the said chamber being at one end of the body.
The trunk thus made may be termed a bureau-trunk, it having` no top or lid hinged to the body. Each of the drawers may be pro- 6o vided with a lock for fastening it in place, and, besides, it may have one or more handles to its front to facilitate the pulling out of it the said drawer.
If desirable, the mouth of the uppermost drawer-chamber may be provided with a cover.
I claim as my invention in the said described trunk as follows:
The trunk-body provided with one or more drawer-receiving chambers to open through 7o one side ot' the body, and also with one or more drawer-receiving chambers to open through one or both of the ends of the body, as set forth, and with a cover-receivin g chamberand a sliding cover thereto to the mouth of each of such drawer-chambers, and with 011e or more drawers to each of the said chambers, all bein g substantially as set forth.
FRANCIS M. PIPER.
