They present invention relates to window sash retaining devices, and has for its main object the provision of means for frictionally engaging window sash within a window frame for maintaining thevsame in a raised position within the frame.
A'still further object of the present invention is the provision of a pair of wheels upon a window sash, and which may be maintained under tensioning pressure against the window frame for holding the sash in a raised adjusted position, and without'employing usual weights and cords.
With the above general objects in View and others that will appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in fthe novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out inthe appended claims. i
In the drawing forming a part of this applica tion and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views;
Fig. 1 is a face elevational View of the window sash showing the relative position therewith of the retaining means constituting the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal cross-sectional view thro-ugh a corner of a window sash, with a side elevational view of the retaining device in its operative position with respect to a window frame;
Fig. 3 is a top elevational view of the window sash, with a corresponding View of the window sash retaining device, partly in section; and
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on line 4 5 of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the present drawing there is shown therein window sash lil, with a pair of retaining devices, generally indicated by II' in Fig. 1, one positioned :at each upper corner of the window sash. The window frame within which window sash I is intended for positioning and with which said retaining devices II are intended to cooperate is indicated in Fig. 2 by I2.
Each upper corner of window sash I is provided with an L-shaped recess I3 for positioning therewithin L-shaped plate I4, the ho-rizontal portion of said recess I3, made in the horizontal, upper sash bar of the window sash, is deeper than the vertical portion of said recess made in the adjacent vertical sash bar, for the purpose of accommodating therewithin the mechanism of the retaining device hereinafter described. Said L-shaped plate I4 is maintained in position upon the sash by means of a plurality of screws I5.
Inserted upon the horizontal portion of said L-shaped plate I4 is housing IS, which is of substantially square formation on transverse crosssection and open at both of its ends.
The bottom ofsaid housing I6 is below the horizontal portion of said L-shaped plate I4 and is accommodated within groove I1 made at the end of the upper, vertical sash bar, and which groove communicates with said recess I3.
At some distance from the corner of said L- shaped plate I4 angle plate I8 is aflixed to said L-shaped plate I4 by means of rivet I9. The vertical portion of said angle plate I8 enters the inner end of housing IB, and is accommodated therein, as is clearly seen in Fig. 3.
The invention further includes cradle 2D, including top wall 2I Iand a pair of side walls 22. J ournaled upon pins 23 carried by said side walls 22 and outwardly thereof, is a plurality of antifriction wheels 24, which ride upon the upper face of the horizontal portion of said L-shaped plate I4, and the lower face of the upper wall of said housing I6, for guiding said cradle 2G in its sliding movement within said housing I6.
At the outer end of said cradle 20 the upper wall 2I thereof is severed from side walls 22 and bent downwardly to define vertical transverse wall 25. The outer ends of said side walls 22 constitute a pair of resultant rails 26, which extend beyond the outer end of housing I5, and which have wheel 21 journaled therein. The journaling means for wheel 21 includes axle 2B and nut 29 engaging said axle 28. Said wheel 21 may be made of metal having its periphery rubberized for frictionally engaging and contacting with window frame I2 as is seen in Fig. 2.
Inserted through said transverse wall 25 is rod 30 having head 3| which bears against the outer face of said transverse wall 25. The opposite end of said rod 30 extends through the vertical p0rtion of said angle plate I 8, and the outer reduced threaded end of said rod 30 carries nut 32' which constitutes a means for limiting outward shifting movement of said rod 30.
Encompassing said rod 3IJ and interposed between said transverse wall 25 and the vertical portion of said angle plate I8 is coil spring 33, which normally urges said cradle 20 away from said angle plate I8.
When window sash I0 is within window frame I2 wheel 21 contacts with said window frame I2 and is urged into a strong contact therewith by spring 33, which, bearing against the vertical portion of angle plate I8, exerts a strong pressure upon transverse wall 25 for urging the same outwardly. Nut 32 does not come in contact with the outer face of the vertical portion of angle plate I8, and limits the shifting movement of rod 3g only when window sash l0 is removed from within frame l2, as is seen in Fig. 3. From the hereinabove description it will be seen that cradle 20 and wheel 21, due tothe action of spring 33 are under a resilient, yielding tension, permitting wheel Z'l to ride over anyrough surfaces of frame I2 without jarring of the window sash in its vertical sliding movement within frame l2.
As is seen in Fig. 2 the mechanism ot the re. taining device, enclosed within housing i6 is countersunk within the horizontal portionf recessl, thereby presenting a neat appearance for window sash I with no mechanism visible or projecting outwardly therefrom.
From the hereinabove' description it will be apparent that a pair. of window sash retaining de; vices I'I, as is shown in Fig. 1, exerting a strong pressure in opposite directions and against Window. frame. l2fwill maintain windoW'SaSh I0 in its raised adjusted position with said frame.
While there described herein av preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that I ninor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and. scope'of the inventonfas claimed.

resultant ends of said side walls constituting pair of spaced rails, a frame engaging member carried by said rails. a rod in engagement with said transverse wall and passing through said p-late, and a coil spring encompassing said rod and interposed between said plate and said transverse wall, said coil spring exerting pressure upon said transverse wall for urging said rails away from said plate.
2. A dev-ice for retaining a window sash within a frame comprising a plate, a housing mounted upon said plate, said housing having open ends, a' cradle positioned within said housing for a longitudinal shifting movement therein, a pair of rails integrally formed with said cradle and extending through the outer open end of said housing, anti-friction wheels carried by said cradle and contacting said plate and said housingfor ,facilitating longitudinal sliding movement of said cradle, a plate rigidly affixed to said rst named plate, Said- Second,` named plate. entering the opposite end of sai-d housing, a rody in en- SagCmGIi-t with said cradle, a coil springv interposed between said cradle and said second named plate forf urging said cradle away from said second named plate, and a frame engaging member car' rivedy by said rai-1s, said spring urging said rails away from said second namedv plate.
