SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 541,437, dated June 18, 1 895. 7 Application filed October 13, 1894- Serial No. 525,759- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TEXAS GILBERT, of Columbus, in the county of Muscogee and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Ghurn-Power, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved churn power, which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and arranged to impart a reciprocating and turning motion to the dasher of the churn.
The invention consists principally of a shaft mounted to turn and to slide and adapted to support a dasher, ahead held revolubly on the said shaft, and a pitman pivotally connected with the said head and with the crank arm of the driving shaft.
The invention also consists'in certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the shaft-head and connection, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section of part of the improvement on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings A represents the vertical main frame having perforated lugs -a whereby it may be secured to a support and provided at its upper. and lower ends with forwardlybent portions or branches A, A respectively, the latter of which the branch A is provided with a short vertical standard A"', as clearly seen. The [branches A, A are provided with aligned perforations or slide bearings in which is rotatively and slidingly mounted a vertical shaft B, having at its lower end an integral enlargement B, provided with a socket in its under side to permit of attachment to a churn dasher or the like, and in the periphery of said shaft 13 above the enlargement B is formed a spiral groove B adapted to be engaged. by the tip of a set screw 0,
screwing through the side wall of the slide bearing 0', in the lower branch A of main frame A, as seen in Fig. 4, whereby said shaft B will when reciprocated in its bearings in the main frame A, also be caused to rotate.
The upper end B of shaft B is reduced as seen in Fig. 3 and fits in a socket formed in a headD, in which it is free to turn but held against withdrawal by means of a washer E and pin E. The upper portion of head D is forked and its forks are perforated to receive a pin F which passes through an aligned perforation formed in the lower end of the re- .turned downwardly-extending integral head G of a pitman G, the lower end of which is pivotally connected to an arm H, secured on a driving shaft I, journaled in a bearing formed in the upper portion of the upright standard A of the main frame.
A balance wheel J having a handle J, is mounted on the end of shaft I whereby the latter may be conveniently turned to actuate shaft 13, and impart reciprocatory and rotary movement thereto.
A churn power constructed as above described has many advantages for use over other similar devices, being extremely simple and durable and owing to the peculiar movement, affording rapid movement of the shaft B with comparatively little expenditure of power. The construction of the main frame and shaft B and of the pitman and the various connections is also very inexpensive compared with other devices.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of a mainframe having upper and lower branches provided with slidebearings, a shaft slidingly and rotatively mounted in said bearings and provided with a reduced upper end, means for rotating said shaft, a head having perforated forks and provided with a socket to receive the reduced end of said shaft, a washer and pin for securing said shaft against. withdrawal from the socket, a pitman having a returned downwardly-extending head provided with a perforation registering with the perforations in the forks, said pitman head being arranged between the forks, a pin passed through the perforated forks and pitman head, an upright standard formed on the front end of the lower branch of the main frame and provided with a hearing at its upper portion, a shaft journaled in said bearing and provided with an arm pivotally connected to the lower end of the pitman, and a means for rotating said shaft, substantially as set forth.
