This invention relates to portable drill rigs, and more particularly to an improved portable drill rig for a hammer rock drill, embodying an improved adjustable mounting for the drilling tool whereby the latter may be adjusted through a wide range of drilling positions.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved portable drill rig. Another object is to provide an improved rock drill rig having an improved adjustable supporting structure for the drilling tool. A further object is to provide an improved wagon drill mounting for a hammer rock drill. A still further object is to provide an improved portable drill rig having a novel adjustable supporting structure for the drilling tool, embodying means for adjusting the tool through a wide range of drilling positions. Still another object is to provide an improved swingable boom structure for a rock drill carriage. A still further object is to provide an improved swingable boom structure having a movable pivotal mounting and improved means for bodily moving the boom pivot mounting to eifect swinging of the boom. A further object is to provide an improved pivotal drill mounting structure for a drill carriage, whereby a drilling tool may be easily and quickly adjusted in a vertical direction relative to the work. Another object is to provide an improved rock drill carriage having a novel combination and arrangement of parts. Other objects and advantages of the invention will, however, become clearly apparent as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings there is shown for purposes of illustration one form which the invention may assume in practice.

The improved drill rig includes a wheeled carriage 3 having a generally U-shaped horizontal ill carriage frame 4 comprising longitudinal side irame members 5, B and transverse end frame members 6. The forward ends of the side frame members of the carriage frame carry axle mountings I for rubber-tired wheels 8, and fixed to the rear end of the carriage frame is a bracket 9 in which is joumaled a swivel mounting ill for a rear rubber-tired caster wheel ll. Connected to the swivel mounting ill is a conventional tow bar l2, whereby the drill rig may be towed from place to place. Extending longitudinally of and secured to the parallel side frame members 5 of the carriage frame are vertical guide frames i3 provided longitudinal guideways N. A horizontal transverse support or crosshead I 5 is mounted on these guide frames to move along the guideways thereof in a direction lengthwise of the carriage.
The transverse support or crosshead l5 comprises a tubular member i6 integral with an elongated, forwardly projecting boom or frame l l, and having fixed thereto end members it, and the crosshead is mounted on supporting rollers i9 received in the guideways i4. Extending centrally through the-tubular member is is a transverse supporting and clamping bolt 20 having threaded thereon a tightening nut 2|, and this bolt, when tightened, is adapted to clamp the crosshead i5 to the carriage frame in its difierent adjusted positions along the guideways. The rollers 39 are journaled on the end portions of the bolt 20, and the end members it of the tubular member it are supported by the bolt. Thus the boom is pivotally mounted at its inner end on the bolt fill of the crosshead. The elongated boom ii includes par allel side support members 22 arranged just inside of the side frame members 5 of the carriage frame, and these side support members 22 are connectedat their ends remote from the boom pivot by a crossframe member 23. Thus the boom is generally rectangular in shape and is swingable vertically between the side frame members of the carriage through the open end of the carriage, as will be easily seen. Parallel side arms or links 24, 24 are pivotally connected at 25 to the upper sides of the side support members 22 of the boom and are connected at their rearward ends by a erossframe 28. This crossframe of the connecting arms or links is pivotally mounted on upstanding side portions 21 which are secured to the rear ends of the side frame members 5 of the carriage frame. The drilling tool 2 is adjustably mounted on the crossframe member 23 at the free forward end of the boom, in a manner to be later explained.
In this illustrative construction, arranged centrally lengthwise of the carriage frame immediately below the boom pivot mounting at the rear end of the carriage and mounted within the bracket 9 is an extensible power device, generally designated 28, operatively connected to the crosshead II for moving the latter bodily along its guideways to vary the position of the boom pivot mounting. This power device may assume various forms and herein consists of a double telescopic hydraulic jack similar to that disclosed in a copending application, Ser. No. 398,805, filed June 19, 1941, now matured into Patent No. 2,316,672, patented April 13, 1943, in which I am one of the joint inventors. This lack has an outer cylinder 30 secured by usual U-bolts it to the bracket 9, and a secondary piston rod 32 extends forwardly from a primary piston rod which extends through a, front cylinder head. Fixed to this piston rod is anannular member or collar 33 engaging the transverse tubular member l6 midway between the ends of the crosshead [5.
In this instance, the parallel end frame members 6 of the carriage frame are arranged in superimposed relation and are made hollow to provide a liquid reservoir 34. The interiors of these hollow members 6 are connected together by a vertical conduit 35, and the upper member has a filler plug 38 which is removable to permit filling of the reservoir with a liquid. Attached, as by U-bolts 38, to a vertical plate 31 secured to the members 8, is a pump cylinder 39 having a vertical bore 40 containing a reciprocable pump plunger 4!. This pump plunger has the upper end of its piston rod 42 pivotally connected at 43 to a manual operating lever 44, the latter in turn pivotally connected at 45, as by a pin and slot, to a bracket 46 mounted on the bent upper portion 41 of the plate 31. The lower end of the pump cylinder, beneath the pump plunger, is connected through a conduit ill to a valve box this conduit communicating with a passage 52 in the valve box, which is connected through a check-valve-controlled passage 53 and conduit 54 to the liquid reservoir. The passage 52 is also connected through a check-valve-controlled passage 55 and conduit 58 to the rear end of the outer jack cylinder 30. Liquid flow is permitted by the check valve through the passage 52 to the pump cylinder, while flow through the passage 55 past the check valve is towards the jack cylinder 30. The conduit 55 is connected through a conduit 51 to the reservoir and is provided with a manually controlled bypass valve 58. The hydraulic jack is, as above mentioned, of the double telescopic type, and when the pump plunger 4| is operated by the hand lever 44 liquid under pressure may be forced into the rear end of the outer jack cylinder to efiect forward movement of the piston rod 32, thereby to move the transverse support or crosshead I! which provides the bottom pivot mounting forwardly along its guideways l4 relative to the carriage frame, and as a result the boom I1 is swung upwardly about its point of pivotal connection with the links or arms 24, thereby to elevate the drilling tool 2. When liquid is trapped within the hydraulic Jack 29, the boom, links and drilling tool are held in their adjusted position. When it is desired to lower the drilling tool, that is, to permit downward swinging of the boom, this may be accomplished simply by opening the bypass valve 58 so that liquid is bypassed from the hydraulic jack back to the reservoir. When the bolt 20 is tightened, the crosshead parts are clamped in adjusted position to the carriage frame firmly to hold the boom in its adjusted position.
The drilling tool 2 may be similar to that disclosed in my copending application, Serial No. 321,346, filed February 28, 1940, matured into Patent No. 2,338,625, patented Jan. 4, 1944, and comprises an elongated guide frame 60 supported by a trunnion support 6| having a swivelled plate 82 secured within a saddle member 63, the latter in turn being swivelly and laterally adjustably mounted on the transverse outer frame member 23 of the boom. The saddle has conventional clamps for securing the swivel plate to the saddle support and for clamping the saddle support to the boom. Mounted on the guideways of the guide frame 60 for movement therealong is a conventional hammer motor 64 adapted to actuate percussively a usual drill steel 65. Feeding means may be employed to feed the hammer motor back and forth along the guideways of the guide frame, in the manner fully described in the copending application Serial No. 321,346 above referred to. As the structure of the drilling tool does not per se enter into the present invention, further description thereof is unnecessary.
The rock drill rig may be towed from one working place to another by the tow bar l2, the wheeled carriage providing a mobile base, whereby the rock drill rig may be readily moved over the ground surface. When it is desired to drill horizontal holes in the working face a substantial distance above the ground surface, the drilling tool 2 may be positioned in the manner shown in full lines in Fig. 2, with the drill guiding frame 60 in a horizontal position, and when it is desired to drill vertical holes the guide frame 60 may be swung into a vertical position about its mounting at the forward free end of the boom in an obvious manner. The boom I! may be swung in a vertical direction about its pivotal mounting simply by operating the hand pump to operate the hydraulic jack to move the boom pivot mounting bodily longitudinally along the guideways 14, thereby to effect upward swinging of the boom, and the boom may be quickl lowered simply by opening the bypass valve 58. The lowered horizontal position of the drilling tool 2 is indicated in dotted. lines in Fig. 2, with the drill guiding frame 60 disposed in a horizontal position near the ground surface. It is evident that during adjustment of the boom the clamping bolt 20 may be loosened; and, thereafter, the bolt is tightened to clamp the parts in adjusted position, and a similar clamping bolt may be disposed at the pivot of the connecting arms or links 24 so that the boom may be held firmly in adjusted position. By adjusting the clamps for the swivel plate and saddle mounting of the drilling tool, the guide frame 60 may be adjusted into different angular positions and laterally with respect to the boom, so that holes may be drilled in practically any desired location, as will be readily appreciated.
As a result of this invention, it will be noted that an improved portable drill rig is provided having improved supporting and adjusting means for the drilling tool whereby the latter may be adjusted and supported through a wide range of positions. It will further be evident that by the provision of the movable pivotal mounting for the boom, together with the particular arrangement of the connecting links or arms, the boom may be swung through a relatively great distance in a vertical direction relative to the work. It will further be evident that by the provision of a portable drill rig having the novel arrangement of parts disclosed, not
. mounting against bodily only is a structure attained which is relatively simple in design and light in weight, but also one which is extremely rugged and well adapted to meet the severe demands of service. Other uses and advantages of the improved drill rig will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art. While there is in described one form this application specifically which the invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form the same is shown for purposes oi illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope oi the appended claims. 4
What Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
i. A portable drill rig comprising, in combination, a portable base, a boom mounted on said base to swing in a vertical direction relative thereto and having a movable pivotal mounting at its inner end, said boom adapted to support a drilling tool at its free end, and means for moving said boom pivot mounting bodily relative to said base to eilect swinging of said boom.

A portable drill rig comprising, in combination, a portable base, a boom pivotally mounted on said base to swing in a vertical direction relative thereto and having a movable pivotal mounting at its inner end, said boom adapted to support a drilling tool at its free end, a rigid swingable supporting link pivotally connected to both said base and said boom, and means for moving said boom pivot mounting bodily relative to said base about its point of pivotal connection with said link 8. A portable drill rig comprising, in combination, a portable base having a longitudinal guideway. a boom swingable in a vertical direction relative to said base and adapted to support a drilling tool at its free end, a .pivotal mounting for the inner end oi said boom guided for movement along said base guideway, and means for moving said boom pivot mounting bodily along said guideway to eflect swinging of said boom.

A portable drill rig comprising, in combination, a portable base having a longitudinal guidetvay, a boom swingable in a vertical direction relative to said base and adapted to support a drilling tool at its free end, a pivotal mounting for the inner end of said boom guided for movement along said base guideway, a pivoted link connection between said base and said boomb and means for moving said boom pivot mounting bodily along said guide-way to efiect swinging oi said boom about its point oi pivotal connection with said link connection.

A portable drill rig comprising, in combination, a portable base, a boom pivotally mounted on said base to swing in a vertical direction relative thereto and having a movable pivotal mounting at its inner end, said boom adapted to support a drilling tool at its free end. means for moving said boom pivot mounting bodily relative to said base to eiiect swinging of said boom, and means for clamping said pivotal movement relative to said base to hold said boom in adjusted position.

A portable drill rig comprising, in combination, a portable base having a longitudinal guideway, a boom swingable in a vertical directo efiect swinging or said boom for the means for securing said against bodily movement relative to said base tion relative to said base and adapted to support a drilling tool at its free end, a pivotal mounting inner end 01 said boom guided for movement along said base guideway, means for moving said boom pivot mounting bodily along said guideway eflect swinging of said boom, and boom pivot mounting guidewayto hold said boom in adjusted position. 7. A portable drill rig comprising, in combination, a portable base having an upstanding portion at one end and spaced side memhere at its opposite end, said base being open intermediate said side members, a boom adapted to support a drilling tool at its free end and swingable in a vertical direction between said side members through the open end of said base, a movable pivotal mounting for the inner end of said boom, a pivotedlink connection between said boom and said upstanding base portion,

A portable drill rig comprising, in combination, a portable base, an angularly movable frame having a drill mounting at oneend thereof, and having its other end guided for movement lengthwise of said base, means for moving of said base, and means coacting with said frame to efl'ect a change in the vertical angle thereof as such movement is effected.
12. A portable drill rig comprising. in combination, a portable base, an angularly movable frame having a. drill mounting at the outer end thereof, and having its inner end guided for movement lengthwise of said base, means for moving the latter end of said frame lengthwise of said base, and means coacting with said frame between its ends for imposing angular movement thereon in vertical planes as the inner end of said frame is moved lengthwise of said base.
