JOHN GEARON, or BELOIT, IOWA.
SCYTHE-SNATH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,425, dated December 14, 1880.
Application filed June 16, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GEARON, of Beloit, in the county of Lyon and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scythe-Snaths, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a. plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Figs. 3 and 4 show a modification of the left-hand handle.
The object of this invention is to furnish scythe-snaths so constructed that they may be readily adjusted as the different persons who are to use them may require.
The invention consists of a scythe-snath formed of three parts halved to each other,
tions, corresponding depressions, and handles,
as hereinafter described.
,it is secured to the lower end of the lower part, 0, of the snath. Upon the upper side of the heel of the scythe A are formed projections D, which fit into corresponding depressions E in the part 0 of the snath, so that the scythe A will be held securely in place by tightening the nut of the bolt B. The projec-' tions and depressions D E are so formed that the point of the .scythe A may be set in or out, as the mower may desire. The upper end of the part 0 and the lower end of the part F of the snath are halved to each other, and are secured together by the bolt G, that carries the right-hand handle H, the joint being so formed that the parts (3 F of the snath may have a vertical adjustment, so that the edge of the scythe Acan be set up or down, ascircumstances may require. The adjacent faces of the joint between the parts 0 Fare provided, the one with projections I, and the other with depressions J, so that the said parts (J F will be held securely in place when adjusted. The upper end of the part F and the lower end of the part K are halved to each other, and are secured together by a bolt, L, so that the said part K can be adjusted forward or back, as may be desired. The adjacent faces of the parts F K are provided, the one with projections M, and the other with corresponding depressions N, so that they will be held securely in place when adjusted.
To the outer end of the part K is secured the left-hand handle 0 by a screw, P, screwed into the end of the said part K. If desired, the left-hand handle 0 may be placed between the arms of a U-shaped bar, Q, which has a screw, 1%, formed upon its bend to be screwed into the end of the part K of the snath, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4:- In this case a notch, S, may be formed in the end of one of the arms of the bar Q, to adapt the said bar to be used as a wrench to loosen the nuts of the various bolts, so that the snath can be adjusted at any time.
With this construction the scythe and snath can be adj nsted as the character of the mowing and the wishes of the mower may require.
