Description

We WpsENca No., 231,935. vPmentel Sept. 7,1880.
Extension- Hinge for Lounges.
Y i Y JZ 0 Y fig/2.
UNITED STATES WENDELIN SENG, OF
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
EXTENSION-HINGE FOR LOUNGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,935, dated September '7, 1880.
Application filed April 1, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit knownthat I, WENDELIN SENG, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension-Hinges for Lounges, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved hinge folded out, and Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section through the same while closed.
The nature of my invention relates to hinges adapted for extension-lounges and to an improvement of the hinge described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 147,869, granted to me on February 24,1874.
My invention consists in constructing an .extension-hinge composed of two pieces only,
`of the lounge by three wood-screws.
one of which is rigidly secured to the bodyframe of the lounge, while the other pivotal piece is slotted, and is secured to the extension-frame of the lounge by two semi-spherically-headed wood-screws, on the Shanks and under the heads of which said slotted piece will slide and will provide the desired play for extending said lounge, which pla-y as to distance may be varied by the distance said screws are placed apart.
It also consists in the peculiar device for lookin g the extension-movement ofthe hinge, while the lounge is closed,by one of the semispherical wood-screw heads, holding the slotted part ot' the hinge, entering a hole or cavity in the rigid part of said hinge.
In the drawings, A is a plate adapted to be secured upon the front edge of the body-frame This plate has two knuckles, a, at its front edge, and near its knuckle end, on its center line, it has a conical hole, b, with a bossed border, and at c it has an oblong hole.
D is a narrow plate having knuckles d, which are tted between the knuckles a. of plate A, and are connected therewith by the pintle p, so as to form a flexible'n joint. This plate D has alongitudinal slot, o, and is secured to the edge ofthe lounge-extension (Model.)
frame by two semi-spherically-headed woodscrews, f and g, so as to be permitted a sliding motion thereon, the distance of such motion being determined by the distance these screws fand g are placed apart. rIhe head of screw fwill enter the hole I) in plate A when the lounge is closed, whereby the extension-frame will be held from any lateral or side play while resting upon the body-frame of the lounge, and the head of wood-screw g will enter the hole o, which is made oblong to suit varying positions said screw g may be placed at for the required play to be allowed according to the thickness of the material or fabric the lounge may be covered with.
The object of these extension-hinges being to provide the necessary space for the double thickness of covering material interposed bctween the body-frame and the extension-fra me of the lounge while said lounge is opened out, Without having the hinge-knuckles project off the front face of the lounge while closed, the distance of sliding motion necessary to be thus allowed varying with the thickness ofthe material or fabric with whichsaid lounge may be covered, this hinge is arranged to adapt itself to the varying covering material by simply placing the wood-screw g nearer toor farther ott' the wood-screw f, whereby the distance of sliding movement is increased or decreased, thus providing a hinge which besides its great simplicity and consequentcheapnjess, oiiers every advantage for its-intended purpose. i
What I claim as my invention is t The extension-hinge for a lounge described, consisting of plate A, secured to the immovable portion of the lounge and provided with conical hole b and rectangular hole c, and the slotted plate D, hinged to said plate A, and adapted to be adjusted `in position by the screws f g, substantially as described and shown.
WENDELIN SENG.
