A TTOH/VEVS CHARLES W. STI'IES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLOSING DEVICE FOR DOORS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs W. STITEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Man- The object of the invention is to provide 7 a new and improved device for closing the space between the hinge side of the door and the jamb whether the door is open or closed, thus preventing persons from peeping through the said space into the room, at the same time rendering the door air and dustproof at this point.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a cylindrical covering member provided at one side with an attaching flange adapted to be secured to the face of the door adjacent the hinge side thereof, the said covering member having its vertical center line coinciding with the axis of the door hinges.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a face view of the improvement as applied, the floor being shown in section; Fig. 2 is an enlarged face view of the lower portion of the device as applied and with the door in closed position and the floor shown in section; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same with the door in open position and the floor and door sill shown in cross section; Fig. 4 is a sectional plan View of the same on the line 4-4: of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2; and Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views of the members ofthe door hinge in detached position.
The door A is mounted to swing in the door casing B, by the use of top and bottom hinges G, C, and the space between the hinge side of the door A and the adjacent jamb of the door casing B is closed or covered by a cylindrical covering D, made of sheet metal, wood or other suitable material and having an attaching flange D fastened by screws E or other fastening means to the face of the door so that the covering D extends from the top to the bottom of the door. The vertical center line of the covering D coincides with the axis of the hinges Specification of Letters Patent.

Application fi1ed March 30, 1914. Serial No. 828,238.
C, C so that when the door is swung open or closed the covering D closes the space between the hinge side of the door A and the ad acent jamb of the door casing B.
In order to give a desired finish to the closing device use is made of a trimming strip F secured by screws or nails E to the door casing B adjacent the covering D and in peripheral contact with the same, as plainly indicated in Fig. 5. It will be noticed that this trimming strip F corresponds to the flange D of the covering D to enhance the appearance-0f the closing device and to make the same symmetrical Whether the door is open or closed. It will also be noticed that the attaching flange D is adapted to rest on the trimming strip F at the time the door A is swung into open .position, thus limiting the opening movement of the door A.
Each of the hinges C, C is preferably of the construction shown in detail in Figs. 6 and 7 that is, each hinge is provided with a pintle C extending from a base C provided with attaching flanges C, C standing at a right angle, one relatively to the other. The flange O for the top hinge O is attached to the top cross rail of the door casing B while the flange C is attached to the jamb, and for the bottom hinge C the flange C is attached to the jamb and the flange (1* to the floor'G under the sill H, as plainly indicated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. The pintle C is adapted to be engaged by a bearing C held on the forward edge of an attaching flange C from which extends at right angles a second attaching flange C The flanges O and C of the two hinges G and C are attached to the door A, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4.
The upper and the lower ends of the tubular covering D fit over the bearings C of the hinges O and C, and the rear portions of the said upper and lower ends of the covering D are out out, as indicated in Fig. 4, to straddle the portion of the bearing adjacent the attaching flanges C on opening and closing the door.
It will be noticed that by the arrangement described a fine appearance is given to the door at the hinged side thereof and at I the same time the opening or space between the said hinge side and the jamb is completely covered whether the door is in an open or in a closed position.
'Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A closing device for doors, comprising a vertically-disposed cylindrical covering 1 member provided at one side with an attach:
I flange.
2. A closing device for doors, comprising a vertically-disposed cylindrical covering member provided at one side with an attaching flange adapted to be secured to the face of the door adjacent the hinge side thereof, the said covering member having its vertical center line coinciding with the aXis of the door hinges, the upper and lower ends of the said cylindrical member being out along the inner portions to straddle the shanks of the hinge leaves attached to the door.
3. A closing device for doors, comprising a vertically-disposed cylindrical covering member provided at one side with an attaching flange adapted to be secured to the face of the door adjacent the hinge side thereof, the said covering member having its vertical center line coinciding with the aXis of the door hinges, the upper and lower ends of the said cylindrical member fitting over the hinge ears and having cut-out portions fitting the shanks of the said ears.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES W. STITES.
