Description

June 1941- 5. w. JOHNSTON CROCHET SET Filed Nov. 7, 1940 Patented June17, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENTOFFICE CROCHET SET Stanley W. Johnston, Green Bay, Wis.
Application November 7, 1940, Serial No. 364,713
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a crochet set, and it is an object of the invention to provide a set of this kind comprising a container in which are housed or concealed the crochet hooks when not in use, said container constituting a handle for effectively holding a hook in position for use. 7
It is also an object of the invention to provide a set of this kind comprising a container or hollow handle member in which is adapted to be frictionally engaged an elongated split link and upon which link is threaded a desired number of hooks, the mounting of each of said hooks allowing the same to be housed or concealed within the container or hollow handle member or eX- tended for use.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved crochet set whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a crochet set constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, one of the hooks being extended for use;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing all of the hooks housed within the hollow member;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional View taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 4 is a View in plan of the split link unapplied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, I.
denotes an elongated hollow member having one end closed, as at 2, and its opposite end open. This hollow member constitutes a handle and is of such dimensions as to be readily grasped by a hand and which has its outer surface smooth and unobstructed to avoid said member I catching upon the hand or upon the material.
Detachably engaged with the open end portion of the member I, such as by threading as indicated at 3, is an elongated cap 4 having its outer portion tapered or conical with the outer or apex end of said cap 4 open, as at 5, for disposal therethrough of a crochet hook C. The inner portion posed. This opening I and the opening 5 are in longitudinal alignment.
,Insertible within the member I through the open end thereof is an elongated link L of bendable material but of alength less than the length of the handle member I so that said link L may be completely housed within the member I. This link comprises the elongated side arms 8 having their extremities connected with an integrally formed intermediate arcuate member 9 disposed on an outbow. The opposite end portions of these side arms 8 are continued by the inwardly disposed and arcuate members It of such length and disposed on such radii as to normally bein close relation as is illustrated in the accompanying drawing. These members II] are free of attachment one to the other whereby the link L is of a split type.
The link L is preferably made of wire of requisite gauge and possessing sufficient inherent resiliency whereby the split end of the link L or that end portion of the link having the members I0 spring outwardly so that normally the straight portions 8 are in divergence with respect to the intermediate connecting member 9. The separated members I0 readily permit threading on the link L of the butt end portions of the crochet hooks C. These hooks are preferably of different sizes so that a person may conveniently use the size of hook C desired.
- When the set is not in use the hook members C are swung inwardly of the link L about the connecting member 9 as a fulcrum whereupon the link L is inserted within the member I with the split end of the link innermost. As the link L is moved inwardly of the member I, the side arms 8 will have close frictional contact with the internal wall of the member L whereby the link together with its hook C will be effectively maintained housed within the member I and against free movement particularly when the cap 4 is removed.
When it is desired to use a hook C the link L with the hooks thereon is withdrawn from within the member I through theopen end thereof and the desired hook C swung outwardly. This selected hook C is then inserted or threaded through the openings 5 and 'I whereupon the link L with the remaining hooks C carried thereby is returned within the member I and the cap 4 threaded or otherwise engaged with the member adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention 'in practiceexcept as hereinafter claimed.
Iclaim:
l. A crochet set comprising, in combination, an elongated hollow member open at one end, a removable cap for the open end of the member, the outer portion of the cap being provided with a restricted opening, the inner portion of the cap :having a part therein having a restricted opening aligned with the opening in the outer portion of the cap, a crochet hook insertible through said aligned openings of the cap, and means carried by the rear portion of the crochet hook extending within the hollow member and frictionally coacting with the internal wall of the hollow member for releasably holding said rear end portion of the hook within the hollow member.
2. A crochet set comprising an elongated tubular member open at one end, an expansible link insertible within the tubular member through the open end thereof, said link when within the tubular member having frictional contact with the internal wall of the tubular member to hold the link therein, and a crochet hook having an end portion threaded upon the link.
tubular member having frictional contact with the internal wall of the tubular member'to hold the link therein, a crochet hook having an end portion threaded upon the link, and a removable 4 cap for the open end of the tubular member, said cap having means for holding a crochet hook when extended outwardly from the tubular member.
