Description

1934- J. 1.. YOUNGHUSBAND 1,975,252
HOLDER FOR LIP STICKS Filed May 6, 1935 Patented Oct. 9, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a holder for lipstick and particularly to a portable lipstick holder wherein a hinged cap is provided and which cap is connected to a lipstick slide for retracting the 5 stick when the cap is moved to closed position and which allows projection of the stick for use when the cap is moved to open position.
An object of the invention is to provide a holder for lipstick having a hinged cap connected with a lipstick slide to withdraw the same when the cap is moved to closed position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a holder for lipstick having a hinged cap connected with the lipstick slide to allow projection of the stick for use when the cap is moved to open position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a holder for lipstick having a hinged cap wherein the movement of the lipstick is controlled by movement of the hinged cap.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder for lipstick having a hinged cap and connections between the cap and the lipstick slide of such nature as to allow projection of the lipstick for use when the cap is moved to' open position and to limit outward position of the lipstick by reason of the connections between the cap and the slide.
The above, other and further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description, accompanying drawing and appended claims.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and the views thereof are as follows:
Figure l is a side elevational view of a holder for lipstick embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the holder illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the holder of Figure 1 showing the cap in closed position and the lipstick in retracted position.
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the illustrated form of the invention showing the cap in open projected position for use.
Figure 5 shows another form.
The invention is susceptible of use in any kind of shape of lipstick holder, but for convenience has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing in connection with a cylindrical holder 1 having a cap 2 hinged at 3 to the holder 1.
The holder 1 is provided with a central bore of any cross-sectional shape as may be desired and in this bore is a lipstick slide 4 arranged to receive a lipstick 5.
A spring 6 is interposed between the bottom of the lipstick slide 4 and the lower end of the bore 7, which spring tends to urge the slide 4 outwardly, that is, towards the open end of the holder 1.
A flexible member such as a chain 8 is secured to the slide 4 as at 9 and passes through an aperture 10 in the lower end of the holder 1 to the outside of the holder. The chain 8 is connected to a ring 11.
The cap 2 has on each side thereof extending pins 12 or similar devices, to each of which pins is attached a chain 13 and which chains 13 are connected at the opposite ends to the ring 11.
The lengths of the chains 8 and 13 are such as to completely withdraw the lipstick 5 into the bore '7 of the holder 1 when the cap is in closed position, as shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3 of the drawing. The cap 2 is preferably hollow and made of suitable material so that when the lipstick 5 is in retracted position, the upper end of the same may extend above the upper end of'the holder 1 and into the interior of the cap 2 when in closed position, that is, when the lipstick 5 is new and of the usual length.
The chains 13 are shown connected to the pins 12 of the cap 2 forwardly of the transverse central axis of .the cap so as to cooperate with the spring 6 in maintaining the cap in closed position. However, these pins may be arranged anywhere on the cap where it may be desired, and the lengths of the chains 8 and 13 made to conform to the positions of the pins 12 on the cap 2 with respect to the amount of extension or projection of the lipstick 5.
The holder 1 may be of any material, shape and size, and the bore '7 thereof may be of any crosssectional shape.
The cap may be of any desired material but is shown as of metal.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The parts are shown in Figure 3 in the position assumed thereby when the cap is in closed position.
The cap 2 is moved to open position as shown in Figure 4, thus relieving the pull of the chain on the slide 4, whereupon the spring 6 urges the lipstick slide 4 and its accompanying lipstick 5 outwardly into the position of Figure 4 for use. When it is desired to retract the lipstick, all the user has to do is to grasp the cover 2 and move it to closed position whereupon the chains 13 and 8 will cooperate to withdrawthe slide 4 and its accompanying lipstick to the position of Figure 3, at which time the cap is in closed position.
It will be observed that a holder for lipstick made in accordance with this invention, allows use of the lipstick without the user having to touch the stick with her hands at any time, that is to open or close the holder or to use the stick, therefore resulting in a convenient, clean and desirable holder.
Figure 5 includes a holder 1, cap 2 and hinge 3. A bail 14 of stifl wire has its ends hooked into apertures in the cap, while a chain 8 passes through the apertured bottom of the holder and has one end fastened to the cup or slide 4 in the holder base and the other end fastened to the bail 14 for actuation of the lipstick in the manner heretofore described.
The term bore has been used herein to describe the hollow holder, but its use is to be deemed generic and not by way of limitation, as the holder may be made with its hollow interior formed in some other manner than by a bore.
The invention has been described herein more or less precisely as to details, yet it is to be understood that changes may be made in the arrangement and proportion-of parts and that equivalents may be substituted without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The invention is claimed as follows:
1. A holder for lipstick, including a bored holder having a closed bottom end and an open top end, said closed end having an aperture therethrough, a slide movable in said bore, a cap hinged at the open end of said holder, a flexible member connecting said cap and said slide through the aperture in said closed end, a spring between said slide and the closed end of said holder for normally urging said slide towards the open end of the holder, said cap and said connections eflective to withdraw the slide inwardly oi the holder when said cap is moved about its hinge to closed position and to allow projection 01 said slide by said spring when said cap is moved about its hinge to open position, said flexible member being connected to said cap at a point spaced above its hinged connection.
2. A holder for lipstick, including a bored holder having a closed end and an open end, said closed end having an aperture therethrough, a slide movable in said bore, a cap hinged to the open end of said holder, a flexible connection between said cap and said slide passing through the aper-' ture in said closed end, a spring between said slide and the closed end 01. said holder for normally urging said slide towards the open end 01' the holder, said cap and said connections effective to withdraw the slide inwardly of the holder when said cap is moved to closed position and to allow projection of said slide by said spring when said cap is moved to open position, the connections between the cap and the slide including a pair of flexible members attached to each side of the cap and with the other ends of said members attached to a ring, and a single flexible member attached to said slide and projecting through the aperture in said closed end and connected to said ring.
