' UNITED STATES P TENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. THAYER, OF RANDOLPH, MASSACHUSETTS.
BAG-TIE BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,556, dated January 13, 1880.
Application filed November 20, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES M. THAYER, of Randolph, in the county of Norfolk and State 'of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Imfor ties for bags.
The invention consists of a rectangular frame of metal, perforated on one side for attachment to a strap, said frame having pivoted within it a tongue with a beveled serrated tip, and having openings at eitherend for the passage of a strap, and having curved or rounded end bars for the strap to hold or engage against.
In the drawings, A represents the buckle, closed on one side with the exception of the opening a, left for the passage of the strap, and having perforations 0 made in it for the attachment thereto, bystitches, rivets, or otherwise, of a leathern strap, B. The opposite side of the said buckle A is open, and within the said opening is pivoted, with transverse rod 0, the tongue or cam O,having a beveled and serrated tip, d, as shown.
The end bar, f, is rounded on the inside toward the tip (1 of the tongue 0, and between thisend bar, f, and the tongue 0 is an opening, g, for the passage of the leathern strap B. At the rear of the said tongueO is another opening, h, for the strap B, and the end bar, '0', at
' this end is also curved on its inner face, as
shown.
The tie E is made complete by the attachment of the lea-thern strap B to the buckle A, as shown in Fig. 1. When the said tie E is placed about a bag the end of the strap B is passed through the openings at g in the order named, and tightly drawn, and the tongue 0 pressed down upon it, so that any tendency of the bag to open to resist the stricture of the tie will result in increasingly compressing the said strap B between the serrated end of the tongue 0 and the rounded surface of the barf.
In order to doubly secure the end ofthe strap B, and that it may not accidentally become caught in any object or become loosened in any way, it is also placed through the opening it and the end opening, It, under the end bar, *5. The faces of the bars f and 'i, with which the strap B comes in contact, are thus rounded or curved so that the said strap B may not become frayed or worn by the contact.
This buckle lies flat against a bag,'having no projecting part to catch in and injure bags stowed in contact, its grasp is positive, it will not cut nor fray the strap, and it is strong and durable.
Having thus described my in vention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the strap -B, of buckle A, having end bars, f i, open on one side, and
provided on the other with apertures a g h, perforation b, and the pivoted tongue 0, thelatter having a beveled serrated tip, at, the whole to form the bag-tie shown and described.
