Description

'I. L; LANDIS.
Buckle.
No. 225,147. Patnted Mar. 2, I880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISRAEL L. LANDIS, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,147, dated March 2, 1880.
Application filed January 9, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, ISRAEL L. LANDIS, of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsiu Buckles and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to harness and other buckles; and it consists in a latch connected to the buckle-frame and so constructed that when closed the tongue cannot pass through, but when the'latch is open the tongue can pass through and the strap easily slip out, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a buckle embodying my invention, showing the latch closed. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, showing the latch open.
A represents the buckle=frame, made in ordinary form, with cross-bar B, on which the tongue 0 is pivoted. The frame A is provided with a latch, D, pivoted thereto at one side near the front, and extending across the front and along the opposite side, where the extreme end of the latch is bent to fit over the end of the cross-bar.
The portion of the frame A where the latch D fits is made of reduced thickness, and the latch completes the same, so that when the latch is closed the entire buckle-frame will be of uniform thickness. In other words, the latch forms a part of the frame.
At the front in the body of the frame is made a notch, a, as shown in Fig. 2, which notch is covered by the latch when the same is closed, the buckle then presenting the same appearance as an ordinary buckle. When the latch is opened the end of the tongue will drop through the notch a and the strap will slip out of the buckle. This is especially intended and useful for stiff harness and in case of accidents.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a buckle, the combination, of the frame A, made of reduced thickness at the front and along one side, as described, and provided at the front with a notch, a, the l -shaped latch D, rod B, and tongue 0, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of December, 187 9.
ISRAEL L. LANDIS.
