Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
WILLIAM J. CARNES, SR, OF GONZALES, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,865, dated December 23, 1879; application filed June 7,1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM JAMES GARNEs, Sr., of Gonzales, in the county of Gonzales and State of Texas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal central section of my improved buckle, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof.
This invention has relation to improvements in buckles for harness, military equipments, and other purposes; and the nature of the invention consists in a buckle having parts and uses substantially as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the frame of the buckle, the same being usually of rectangular form viewed from above, and having at one end a raised loop, a, formed out of the body of the frame by means of a depressed crossbar, d. This bar, as
7 shown in Fig. 2, is sunk below the frame A.
b designates a second sunk cross-bar arranged with reference to the frame about halfway between bar d and its end bar d. This bar I) is usually round but is extended in flat form toward bar d, forming a recess, 1', with the said bar b, the object of which will be explained hereinafter. Projecting upward from this extension (lettered e in the drawings) is a strong stud or spur, j, and projecting downward from a bar, f, between extension 0 and bar, is a similar spur, j, the space between the bearing against the upper side of end bar.
The other end of the strap, or an independent strap, 0, is then passed under bar 01, engaged with the tongue, and its free end, if any, carried through loop a, as shown in Fig. 1.
It will be observed that the buckle-joint thus made presents from the outside a very neat appearance, and that on its under side itis smooth and flat-n0t apt to rub oft the hair and abrade the skin. I
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is
1. A buckle consisting of a frame, A, having a raised end loop, a, depressed bars d b, the latter provided with extension 6, with spur j, and barf, having spur j, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
2. A buckle consisting of the depressed cross-bar I), having the vibrating tongue 9 and the extension 0, provided with projecting spur j, adapted to receive the strap end, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM JAMES OARNES, SR.
