1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in jeweler's vises for use in holding watch jewels and the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an'efficient, readily operable device of this character for holding, while fitting, all sizes of jewel settings from the smallest to the largest balance jewel, and also jewel settings for cap and plate jewels of both domestic and foreign 0 watches.
To the accomplishment of the above, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, set forth in detail in thesucceeding description and defined in the claim appended hereto.

Figure 3 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows and drawn to an enlarged scale, and
Figure 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 looking in the reverse direction as indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the vise of my invention comprises a pair of straight, flat 30 clamping jaw members I and 2 of bar-like form pivotally connected together at one end for swinging movement into and from side-by-side clamping relation and having opposed inner edges 3 adapted for flush engagement in such relation.
The pivotal connection comprises a pair of barlike bracket arms 4 extending laterally from the one end of one member I, preferably formed integrally with the latter, and between which the corresponding end of the other member 2 is swingable on a rivet 5, the bracket arms 4 fitting flush against opposite faces of the swingable member to maintain said members I and 2 in a common plane.
The free ends 6 and 1 of the members I and 2 are equipped for coupling together in variable clamping relation by means of a bolt 8 longitudinally slit, part way, as at 9, inwardly from one end thereof and having said end pivoted, as at I0, to the free end 6 of member I in straddling relation thereto for swinging movement in opposite directions into and from spanning relation to the free end I of member 2. The free end of bolt 8'is threaded, as at I I, to receive a knurled thumb nut I2 adapted when screwed inwardly on the bolt 8 to engage the outer side edge of said end I, urge said members I and 2 toward clamping relation, and lock the same in such relation.
Pairs of opposed substantially semi-circular notches I 3 are provided in the opposite edges 3 of members I and 2 at spaced points along the same, said pairs of notches being graduated in size and successively larger toward the free ends of said members. Preferably the side edges of said notches I3 are beveled, as at I4, and the free ends 6 and 1 of members I and 2are reduced in width, as compared with the remainder of said members, to provide for the use of a short bolt 8 and so that the nut I2 when screwed home will set into the outer side edge of member 2 in an out-of-the-way position.
In using the described vise, the nut I2 is loosened, the bolt 8 swung out of spanning relation to the free end I of member I and the members I and 2 separated, as desired, by swinging of member 2 relative to member I. The jewel setting is then placed in the appropriately sized notch I3 of member I, the member 2 swung to engage the opposite notch I3 with the jewel, the bolt 8 swung over the free end I of member 2, and nut I2 tightened to clamp the members I and 2 against opposite sides of the jewel, as will be clear. I
As will be understood, the notches I3 are proportioned in correspondence with various sizes of jewels so that when a jewel is clamped in the appropriate notch the edges 3 of members I and 2 are substantially flush.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall fairly within the scope of the subjoined claim.
What I claim is:
In a vise of the class described, a pair of straight flat clamping jaws of bar-like form pivotally connected together at one end for movement into and from side-by-side clamping relation with opposed edges substantially engaged, said members being provided with pairs ofopposed mating notches in said edges thereof, respectively, said pairs of notches being graduated in size, and manipulative means at the other end of said members for locking the members together in variable clamping relation and comprising a bolt slotted longitudinally from one end partway and having said end pivoted to and straddling one member for swinging movement of 'the bolt into straddling relation to the other member, and a thumb nut threaded onto the bolt for adjustment thereon against said other member, said pivotal connection comprising a pair of arms extending laterally in side by side spaced apart relation from one jaw and rigidly connected thereto, said arms straddling the other jaw, and a pin extending through said arms and other law.
