T 0 all w 7mm t'tmay/ concern Be it known that I, HERMAN Riennr, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings andState of New York, have invented a new and lmproved Clamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in work holding clamps, the primary object of the invention being to provide a clamp in which a pair of movable jaws are slidable upon an ordinary bolt.
A further object is to provide improved means for bracing the jaws against strains incidental tothe clamping of work between them and to provide meansV for preventing bending of the rod or bolt when work is clamped between they jaws.
Another object is to provide improved means for locking one' ofthe aws against sliding movement on the bolt.
Still anotherl object isito provide a clamp which will be simple and practical in construction, strong, durable and eilicient in use, and exceedingly inexpensive to manufacture.
lWith these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating myimproved clamp in use;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in transverse section on the line 3 3; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view through one of the jaws illustrating a modified form of locking means.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 1 represents a conventional type of bolt, provided at one end with a head 2, and screw threaded adjacent its other end, as indicated by lthe reference numeral S. l do not wish to be limited to the use of a bolt, but have found the bolt practical in constructing clamps, which can be sold at a low price.
4 and 5 represent a pair of jaws boredtas indicated at 6, to receive the bolt 1 and slidable freely thereon.
The reference numerals 7, 7 are used to indicate a pair of semi-cylindrical bosses.

These bosses are integral with the aws 4and 5 and entend toward eachother. The bosses are located upon the opposite side of the bolt 1 from `the gripping faces of the jaws. The gripping faces of the jaws are ribbed or toothed, as indicated at 8, and are provided adjacent the rod or bolt 1 with transverse shoulders 9. The particular shape of the gripping'faces ofthe jaws is ofcourse irnmaterial since wish to construct jaws of different shapes for' special kinds of work. TWhen a rectangular piece of workv such as 10 is clamped b'etweenthe' jaws, `the shoulders 9 prevent the turning movement of the work independent of the aws 4 and 5 and the work will act as a coupling to prevent turning movement of the jaws independent of each other. j
rlhe jaw 5 is slidably freely upon the bolt 1 andis adjusted by means of a wing nut or other suitable adjusting member around the threaded end 3 ofthe bolt. The jaw 4'` is formed with a recess' 12 communieating with the bore Gland in this recess a cam member' 13 is mounted. This cam member 18"include's a roundedextension 15 fitting within a rounded depression 14 in the recess 12. The cam member 13 rocks on the extension 15 and includes a toothed surface 16 engageable with the bolt 1 to positively lock thejaw 14 against sliding` movement on the bolt. A pin 17 is passed through a relatively wide opening in the cam member 13. The cam member does not pivot on the pin, but the pin prevents the cam member from falling out of the recess 12 when the jaw 4 is removed from the bolt. A weighted arm 18 serves as a finger hold for rocking the cam. In order to disengage the cam from the bolt 1, it is merely necessary to turn the bolt until the jaw 4 is in a diametrically opposite position to the position illustrated in Figures land 2. The weight of the arm 18 will then cause the cam to fall by gravity away from the bolt so that the jaw 4 may be slid freely on the bolt.
In Figure 4, I have illustrated a slight modification, wherein a aw 18 is provided with a recess 19 communicating with a bore 20. A cam locking member 21 may be readily introduced into the recess before the jaw is slipped over the bolt 22, but after the jaw is mounted on the bolt, the cam cannot be removed. The cam operates on the same principle as the one illustrated in the preferred form of the device to lock the jaw 18 against movement, but instead of being provided with a rounded extension, the cam is formed with a curved recess 23 which rotates on a curved shoulder 24 within the recess 19. This cam member also includes a weighted extension 25 serving the same purpose as the extension 18 on the cam member 13.
The manner of use of the clamp will be readily understood. VVorlr is introduced between the jaws. The jaw 4L is locked at the desired position and the jaw 5 is adjusted by turning the adjusting nut 11 until the work is firmly clamped in place. If the work which is supported between the jaws is of wood, the teeth 8 will dig into the work, as will be readily understood.
As the jaws are advanced toward each other with a piece of work clamped between them, the natural tendency will be for the bolt l to bend at a point between the two jaws. The bosses 7 effectively brace the bolt against suoli transversestrains and prevent bending` thereof. By thus preventing bending of the bolt, all undesirable friction between the nut ll and the bolt is done away with. The nut is in direct alignment with the jaw 5 and bears directly upon the end surface of the jaw. Bending of they bolt would not only cause friction between the threads and the nut, but also between the nut l1 and jaw 5.
Although I have illustrated one of the preferred embodiments of my invention, it will be apparent that various slight changes and 35 alterations might be made in the general A.l O

As a new article of manufacture, a clamp including a rod, a pair of clamping jaws slidable and rotatable on the rod, substantially semi-cylindrical bearing bosses integral with the jaws and presented towards each other, said bosses and jaws being located on opposite sides of the rod, whereby to brace the jaws against strain, one of said jaws having a recess in that portion of the jaw which contacts with the rod, curved walls defining said recess, a cross pin fixed within the recess, a cam loosely pivoted on the pin, said cam including at its free end a toothed surface engageable with the rod, and formed adjacent its pivoted end with a rounded shoulder rocking on the extended bearing surface provided by the curved walls of the recess.
