CLAMPING- DEVICE Application filed May 24, 1930. Serial No. 455,386.
This invention relates to'clamping instruments in general, and more partlcularly to the kind used by cabinet makers.
The object of this invention is to provide a clamping device simple in construction,
cheap in manufacture, and adapted. to a wide range of usefulness.
Another object is to provide a clamp, which, when used in combination with other clamps, of theordinary type, will constitute a mitre-clamp adaptable to all angles.
A still further object is to provide a clamp having its various parts easily detachable when not in use.
invention resides in the combination and arrangement of the. varlous parts descrlbed'in the following specification and later claimed.
It is understood the invention is not limited to the exact details herein disclosed, still for the purpose of showing a preferred embodiment thereof, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals designate like parts in the separate views, and in which: y
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my device.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view, part in section, taken on line 22, of Figure 1.
Referring more specifically tothe drawings in detail the invention comprises a body portion consisting of two members 33 and 34. The body portions 33 and 34 have suitably positioned therein swivel members 35, 36, 37 and 38. -'lhreaded through the" swivelingmembers 35 and 36 is a hand screw 39, having right-hand and left-hand screw threads as shown at 43 and 44 respectively.
Threaded through the swiveling members 37 and 38 is a hand screw 45, having righthand and left-hand screw threads 43 and '44 respectively.
The ends 48 and 49 of the members 33 and 34 constitute the jaws and are use-d as such when being used as an ordinary clamp on materials having parallel edges. V V
In the end portions 48 and 49 are slots 53 and 54 respectively. .Entering the slots '53 and 54, respectively, at right angles are the set screws 55 and 56.
vAt 57 shown a right angle portion of a frame having the arms 58 and 59. To the arm 58 is screwed the clamp, 62 having a shank 63 and to the arm 59 is screwed the clamp 64 having a shank 65. Shanks 63 of clamp 62 extends through the slot 53 of body member 33, and is secured in position by the set screw 55. Shank 65, of clamp 64, extends through the slot 54 of body member 34 I and is secured in position by the set screw 56.
In operation my combination clamp is used as an ordinary clamp and in theusual way the edges to be clamped are parallel. When at an angle as herewith shown two separate clamps 62 and .64 are screwed to the members to be joned together. My combination clamp is then secured to the shanks of clamp 62 and ,64 by means of set screws 55 and 56. The
hand screws 39 and 45 are manipulated to exert the required pressure at the mitre JOIlDll67. I
Having thus described my invention, what I I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters manipulated by the adjustable swivel means.
2. In a clamp of the kind described the {combination with two saddle members terminating into bifurcated gripping jaws, of aux iliary clamps having screw spindles, aws and shanks, said shanks engaging said blfurcations, swivel spindle hand screws for varying the distance between said first named jaws,
l and threadedset screws entering said bifurcations and operating at right angles thereto, the whole being adapted to operate as a universal clamp when manipulated by the adjustable swivel means.
