Description

uvm/wave E. MAITRE.
Wooden Panels.
Patented Dec. 2,1873.
im cw@ ov:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDOUARD MAITRE, OF VEUXAULLES, FRANCE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WOODEN PANELS.
Specieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,22 I dated December 2, 1873; application tiled November 10,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDOUARD MAITRE, of the borough of Veux'aulles, in the Republic ot' France, have invented a new and useful Int provelnent in Iooden Panels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part ot' this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a face view of a pane made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof in a modilied forni. Fig. 3 is a ktransverse section of the same. Fig et is a similar section of a modification thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to the manufacture of wooden panels for contabulations 5 and consists in the employment for this purpose of pieces of waste wood, which are united by means of tongues and grooves, and arranged in suitable patterns between entire boards, the whole being bolted together in such a manner that a compact and ornamental panel is obtained, which can be manufactured at a small cost, and finished for transportation.
In carrying out my invention I take pieces or strips, Aot wood, of that which usually goes to waste in a workshop, and provide the same with tongues and grooves, or with rabbets, whereby the same are joi-ned together. These pieces are prepared by means ot' suitable machinery, to insure their uniformity and to rcduce their cost of construction. The pieces A are interspersed with full or entire boards B, being more or less according to the stiffness required. In panels for llooring, requiring great strength, the stit't'eningboards B are made to alternate with the pieeed boards A, as in Fig. 1 of the drawing, but for ordinary uses said stiffening-boards are placed only on one or both sides or edges of the panel, as in Fig. 2, thus affording a greater opportunity for display or ornamentation.
When the several parts have been adjusted in their relative positions, dowel-pins C are` in.- trodueed for permanently holding the same together. Such dowel-pins are placed crosswise, and are passed through the panel, as in Fig. 3, or keys may be arranged in guidegrooves, as in Fig. 4 ofthe drawing.
Colored woods may be employed in making my panels, the same being arranged in ornamental patterns, as wooden marquetry, and producing very beautiful ei'ects.
The edges of the finished panel arc cut oil:l at right angles, or they may be cut oft' obliquely to form the contabulation called Point of Hungary,77 and such finished panel is also provided with tongues and grooves to ett'eet a connection.
The panels are entirely finished in the workshop, so that they are convenient for transportation, and the same may be substituted for tiles or enamel brick in tlooring, and they are also of advantage for the construction of entablature triezes, wainscots, and other purposes.
IV hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters latent, is-
In the imniufacture'ot' wooden panels, the employment of pieces or strips A of wood, which are united by means of tongues and grooves, and arranged in suitable patterns bctween entire or stii't'ening boards B, the whole being held together by means of pins or keys (l, substantially as herein shown and described.
