SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,199, dated November 18, 1884.
Application tiled January 5, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, JOHN L. RORISON, of Bakersville, county of Mitchell, North Oarolina, have invented. a new and improved Composite Mica Sheet for Stoves, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in the employment of several small pieces or sheets of mica for making large sheetssheets of suflicientsize to be used in illuminated stoves and in other places as hereinafter set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying .drawings, forming part of this specification;
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a large sheet of mica made up of foursmall pieces or sheets. Fig. 2 shows the method of preparing the edges of the small pieces of mica to be united when two small pieces of mica are used; and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 00 x of Fig. 1, showing the preferred method of securing the small sheets or pieces of mica at their contiguous edges or corners. A represents the completed sheet of mica. This is composed of the four small pieces or sheets I) b of mica, which are held together at their contiguous corners by the rivet c and washer d. In uniting these four pieces of mica the inner corner of each sheet is slightly cut away, so that when they are put together a central opening will be formed for the pas- The two inner edges of each small sheet I) are notched or slotted, as shown ate, near their outer ends or edges, and when the pieces are put together the opposite edges to those in which the slots are made are placed in the slots 6, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the edges lap past each other, forming good joints, and are at the same time locked together. The contiguous edges of the small pieces b I) being properly placed to gether, the rivet c is then inserted, and then the washer d is placed upon the smaller end of the rivet and the rivet headed down, so as to cause the head 0 of the rivet and the outer edges of the washer to grasp and firmly hold the small pieces 12 b of mica, as will be understood from Fig. 3, thus making the sheet A as firm and strong and durable as though it were one continuous sheet of mica. WVhen only two small pieces or sheets b of mica are used for making the large sheet, the two eontiguous edges of the pieces will be slotted, as shown at e, in Fig. 2, to form thelap and lockjoint, and in the center the two contiguous edges will be cut away, as shown at f, to form a passage for the rivet c,'so that by heading the rivet upon the washer d the two sheets will be held firmly together.
I am aware that a stove-pipe has been formed of a sheet-metal plate having alternate projections and recess on its longitudinal edges, said projections being bent at their junction with the body of the pipe. These projections overlapped adjacent portions of the body; but the body portions themselves did not overlap at any point, and I do not claim any such construction. Y
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The sheet A of mica, composed of the small sheets I), slitted on their adjacent edges at opposite ends, as shown at e, to allow the entire edges to overlap and lock, and a rivet and washer for securing said adjacent edges together, substantially as shown.
2. The sheet of mica A, composed of small sheets I), slitted on their adjacent edges at 0pposite ends and notched at f f, to allow of a central aperture being formed when the edges are overlapped and interlocked, and a rivet, c, passing through said aperture and'secured by washer d, substantially as set forth.
