This invention relates to conical double-walled paper containers such as are described in the specification of prior Patent No. 2,033,724, which are applicable for use in the delivery of milk and 5, the like, and also for marsh-mallow and other semi-liquid or liquid products. In the specification of such prior patent means are described for opening the containers, which comprise a conical double-walled body and suitable end closures, by
10 forming a single weakening line around the outer wall thereof and a cut around the inner wall, these being so disposed that by pressing the side of the body immediately below the weakening line the latter will be broken, and the upper end of the 15 container above the weakening line, together with the closure secured therein, can then be entirely removed by a hinging movement, and if desired be subsequently replaced to serve as a cover.
In the prior patent the weakening line in the outer wall of the container and the cut in the inner wall thereof are both arranged substantially parallel with the upper edge of the container, throughout their whole length, but in practice it has been found that an improved result can be obtained by forming the weakening line with a tab-shaped extension projecting downwardly at a suitable point, and slanting the weakening line slightly downwardly on each side of such tabshaped extension as hereinafter described and as g illustrated in the accompanying drawing. in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of the blank for the body of the container, Fig. 2 a side view of the upper end of a finished container, Fig. 3 a perspective View illustrating the first step to be taken in opening 1 the container, and Fig. 4 a sectional view on an enlarged scale of part of an opened container with the removed top ready to be applied for use'as a cover.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing it will be seen i that the blank I for the body of the container is formed with a weakening line 2 in that part A which forms the outer wall when the body is rolled up, but that instead of being a continuous line as described in the prior Patent No. 2,033,724 it has a tab-shaped portion 3 depending downwardly at a point which is preferably located approximately opposite the lapped joint of the body. This weakening line 2 may be formed as shown m in Fig. l by a series of short cuts through the material, leaving uncut portions or adheslons 4 serving to hold the parts together. It is preferred to space these uncut portions closer together around the tab-portion 3 and immediately adja- 5 cent thereto than elsewhere, as this has the effect of facilitating the opening operation and strengthening the finished container.
In the prior patent the weakened line 2 was, described as being parallel or approximately so with the adjacent edge of the blank I, but accord- 6 ing to the present invention it is preferred to slope it downwardly on each side of the tab-portion 3,as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
The inner end of the weakened line 2 leads up wardly at 5 to a cut 6 formed around the part 10 B of the blank I which forms the inner wall of the finished container. This cut 6 is practically continuous, and approximately parallel with the adjacent edge of the blank and nearer suchedge than the weakening line, as in the prior patent, but to facilitate the rolling-up operation, particularly when this is eifected by automatic machinery, it is preferred, as in the prior patent, to interrupt it at suitable intervals, as 1, which will hold the blank together and prevent the possibilgo ity of the part 8 thereof between the cut and the adjacent edge of such blank from interfering with the rolling operation, while at the same time the interruptions I can be very easily broken when the container is to be opened.
The blank I is intended to be rolled up to form a conical double-walled body, the smaller end of which is shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. Into this smaller end a closure such as 9 is inserted in the course of manufacture, the other or larger end being left open until the container has been filled. after which a suitable closure is also to be inserted therein. It is intended that the container shall then be reversed so that the smaller end in which the opening means described are formed becomes the top.
When the container is to be opened this can be readily efiected bypressing with the thumb on the tap l0 formed by the tab-shapedextension 3 formed in the weakening line 2, as shown in Fig. 60 3. This will break the material around such tab [0 as shown, forcing the parts to the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 4, and then by pulling on the upper end of the container at this point, or getting a grip under the broken edge, the entire top with the end closure 9 held therein can be easily removed.
The mechanism employed for applying adhesive to the blank is so arranged that such adhesive shall not be applied to the part thereof which when the body is rolled up is between the weakening line 2 and the cut 6, as the subsequent treatment with paraffin wax or other material will give sufficient adhesion at this point until the container is opened. but will readily yield when this is done.
As in the prior patent it is preferred. it the removed top is to be used as a cover. that the cut I should be formed atsuch-a position inblankl that when the container is made up it will be slightly above the under surface of the end closure [as shown in Pig. 4, so that a slight groove l I will be leftwhen the container has been opened into which the remaining upper edge of the container leit by cut 6 will enter when the top'is replaced, making a good. joint.
