Description

Unite This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in slicing devices, land the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described, which may be conveniently andeifectively employed for holding and guiding the blade of a knife, or the like, while performing slicing or chopping operations.
An important feature of the invention resides in the provision of means in the device for receiving and frictionally engaging the knife blade, these means consisting of a vertically elongated guide which is mounted upon a conventional board in `such manner that it may be quickly and easily folded to an unobtrusive, inoperative position.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its adjustability, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.

Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3 3 in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a sectional detail on an enlarged scale, taken substantially in the plane of the line 4 4 in Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a group perspective view on an enlarged scale of the straps comprising the guide; and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional detail, illustrating on an enlarged scale the connection between the lower end portions of the straps of the guide and taken on the same line of Figure 2 as Figure 3.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the slicing device is designated generally by the reference character 10 and embodies in its construction a suitable slicing or chopping board 12 which is provided with an elongated top recess 14 extending inwardly from one edge 10 of the board, as shown.
A disk-shaped mounting member 16 is horizontally rotatable in the inner end 14 of the recess 14, the member 16 being sustained in position by an vannular' flange 18 which is secured in the recess 14 by suitable screws 20.
The member 16 is equipped with a pair of spaced portions of furcations 22 which project upwardly from the flange 1S, and accommodate a transverse pivot pin 24 therebetween on which is mounted the lower end 24 of a vertically elongated guide `assembly 26.
The guide assembly 26 consists of'a pair of straps 28, 30, these straps being juxtaposed and separately connected together at the ends thereof by interlocking means. Thus, the upper end 2S of the strap 28 is provided with an angulated portion 32 which is notched as indicated at 34 to receive a tongue 36 at the upper end 30 of the strap 30. Similarly, a tongue 38 at the lower end 30" of the strap 3i? separably engages a notch 40 in an angulated lower portion 42 of the strap 28, the portion 42 also providing a bearing 43 for the aforementioned pivot pin 24.
The straps 28, 30 of the guide assembly 26 are adapted to receive therebetween and frictionally engage an end portion 44 of a knife blade 44, it being understood that the strap 30 is of a resilient nature and is of an arcuate States Patent ()A i2,806,499 Patented Sept. 17, 1957 ice configuration, as is best shown in Figure 5, so that itis bowed away from the strap 28. However, `means are provided for urging the intermediate portions of the two straps together and thereby frictionallyv engaging the same with the knife blade therebetween, the means consisting of an angulated stop member of clip 46 which is vertically adjustable on the guide assembly 26. This stop or clip has inturned, opposing end portions 48 which slidably engage the strap 30, while a compression spring 50 is provided within the clip to abut the strap 28. The cli'p or stop 46 is also provided with inturned, opposing detents 52 which are receivable selectively in pairs of notches 54 formed in the side edge portions 28" of the strip 28, it being understood that when the end portions 48 of the clip are in engagement with the strip 30, the detents 52 are seated -in one of the several pairs of the notches 54, whereby the stop 46 is prevented from sliding upwardly or downwardly on the guide 26.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the clip 46 not only sustains the two straps 28, 30 together, but it also prevents the knife blade 44 from being shifted too far upwardly in the guide 26.
The position of the clip 46 on the guide assembly 26 may be adjusted by simply pressing the clip to move it laterally of the guide assembly 26 in the direction of the arrow 56 in Figure 4, so as to disengage the detents 52 from the notches 54, whereupon the clip may be slid upwardly ory downwardly on the guide.
The slicing or chopping operation may be effected by simply swinging the knife upwardly and downwardly while the end portion 44' of the knife blade is frictionally held and guided by the straps 28, 30 of the guide 26. Moreover, by virtue of the rotatability of the mounting member 16 in the flange 18, the entire guide assembly 26 together with the knife may be oscillated in Ia horizontal direction, as indicated by the dotted lines 58 in Figure 1.
The guide 26 may be readily subjected to cleaning by simply separating the strap 30 from the strap 28, and when the invention is n-ot in use, the entire guide 26 may be swung on its pivot pin 24 so that it lies flat in the elongated recess 14 of the chopping board 12, `as indicated by the dotted lines 60 in Figure 1. In this connection, it is to be observed that the device is in operative position, the pivot pin 24 prevents the guide assembly 26 from tilting edgewise. However, when it is desired to store the guide in the recess 14, the guide toegther with the mounting member 16 are rotated to a position wherein the pivot pin 24 is transverse or at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the recess 14, so that folding or collapsing of the guide is facilitated.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is a-s follows:
l. A slicing device comprising -a cutting board having an elongated top recess therein extending from one edge thereof and provided with an inner end, a mounting member in the inner end of said recess having upstanding furcations, a pivot pin extending between said furcations, an elongated guide assembly on said pivot pin swingable into and out of recess and comprising a pair of juxtaposed straps for guiding movement of a slicing knife blade therebetween, and stop means on said assembly for limiting movement of said knife blade between said straps comprising a clip slidably adjustable along said straps, one .of said straps having edge notches and said clip having dctents engaging said notches to retain said clip in `adjusted position.
2. The combination of claim 1, said clip being movable laterally of said guide assembly in one direction to disengage the detents from the notches, and a spring between said clip and assembly for moving said clip laterally'in the opposite direstion.
3. The combination .of claim 2, one of said straps Vbeing resilient for frictionally engaging a knife blade between the straps in response to lateral movement of said clip in said opposite difection.
