Description
J. G. SCHERMERHO-RN.
Paper Box.
No. 201,707. Patented March 26,1878.
Fi i.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFnIcE.
JOHN sonnnnnienonn, on BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 20] ,707, dated March 26, 1878; application filed February 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN G. SCHERMER- HORN, of Bloomington, in the county of Mc- Lean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a blank sheet of paper or card-board cut into the desired shape for the formation of my improved box. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the box folded and pressed into the desired shape for packing for transportation. Figs. '3 and 4 represent inside views in sections, showing the manner of closing the ends of the box.
This invention relates to improvements in the class of knock-down paper boxes adapted for the reception of confectioneries, dry-goods, notions, &c., and which can be pressed flat I for transportation, and quickly put into box form when desired for use; and the invention consists of a paper box formed from a single blank of paper, card-board, or other suitable material, out, folded, and secured on the sides, and the ends creased, folded, and closed in the manner hereinafter fully described.
In the drawing, A represents a sheet of paper, card-board, or other similar material cut into the desired shape for the formation of my improved box, and which is creased so as to fold over and form the four sides a b c d of the box, the side a being provided with a strip, a, which is folded inside or out, and secured to the side d'by paste or other suitable material.
The ends b d of thesides b d are creased on the diagonal lines a: w, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and which, when folded over on said lines, form triangular folds of equal dimensions, over which the ends 0 of the side 0 fold, and between which and the diagonal fol'ds the single or end flaps a are tucked, thus forming a complete box, with its ends secured together without the aid of any auxiliary fastening devices. Y
The ends of the boxes are left open when packed for transportation, 'so that they can be pressed flat together, as shown in Fig. 2, and, when desired for use, all that is required is to press them up into shape, fold the ends I), d, c, and a, as above described, when the box is complete and ready for use.
I am aware that forming a box from a single blank of paper, card-board, or other similar substance is old, and such I do not claim, broadly, as my invention; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described paper knock-down box, formed from a' single blank of paper, cardboard, or other similar substance, cut as shown, with its sides a b 0 d folded and secured together by the strip o the ends I) d creased and folded on the diagonal lines 00 m, and the ends 0 folded over the diagonal folds, between which (said folds and the ends a) the single or end flaps a are tucked to close the box, substantially as specified.
