PQO. SOPER. PAPER BOX.
No. 430,045. Patented'June 10. 1890.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IHILO O. SOPER, OF NEW-YORK, N. Y.,
ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWVARD V SHEFFIELD, OF BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK, AND H. R. TAGGART, OF HAS- BROUOK HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY.
PAPER Box- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,045, dated June 10, 1890.
' Application filed February 17, 1890. Serial No. 340,720. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PHILO O. SOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to make a paper box of a minimum amount of material and of a single piece which may be cut out by a die, and then by a particular system. of folds formed into a stiff substantial box without gluing.
My invention consists in a new manner of forming the'ends of folding paper boxes designed not to be glued, whereby a firm strong corner is made and an interlocking joint formed with the edge of the side of the end flap. This box while useful for other purposes is more especially designed for a cigarette slide-box, and has the advantage that the end flaps may be folded down when the box is full, and to open it at either end the flap must be lifted like the lid of a box.
WVith such a box I may employ a sheath such as is ordinarily used in cigarette-boxes; or instead of a sheath the opening edges of the box may be secured by alabel or a gummed strip or stamp of any kind.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a paper blank that has been out from a roll or sheet of paper, from which blank the box is formed by folding upon the dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical central section through my improved box. Fig. 3 represents the box folded into shape with one of its lids standing partly open. Fig. 4 shows a sheath of the same length as the box in Fig. 3.
The paper A is cut into a blank shaped as in Fig. 1that is to say, each end a of the central part of the blank is cut at right angles at its length and the side parts of the ends are beveled at a. At the portion of the blank forming the corners of the box a notch is cut, as shown at B, the shorter wall I) being preferably slightly inclined from the outer edge of the blank toward the central part of the blank which forms the bottom of the box,
while the other side I) of the notch is longer and is inclined in a reverse direction. In folding the blank it is bent at right angles longitudinally on the dotted lines 0 O, the portions 0 cforming the sides of the box. The end portions X Y are folded upon the lines 00 11 which form the lower end edges of the box. The folds on the lines m and y form the upper end edges. At the notches B the edges being brought inwardly and the surfaces I) b being brought toward each other, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3. The side flaps 00 00 and g g of the end portions in closing the box slip inside of the sides 0 c, and the folds b b come between the end wall of the box and the edges I). Then thus folded, the edges 0. of the tops of the box are brought close together, as seen more especially in Fig. 2, and a strong compact close box is the re sult.
To secure the edges to a, to hold the box closed, a strip or label may be pasted thereon, as indicated at z in Fig. 2. A box or slide thus formed may be used with the ordinary rectangular sheath D, of the same length as the box, as seen in Fig. 4:.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A paper box having a central or body portion, side portions projecting at right angles therefrom, end portions having side portions projecting at right angles therefrom, the sides of the end portions being separated from the sides of the body portion by notches having sides or edges of unequal lengths, substantially as set forth, and with creases extending centrally at right angles from the longer sides or edges.
2. The combination of a sheath and a paper box consisting of a central or body portion forming the bottom, side portions proj ecting upwardly from the bottom, end portions forming the ends and top of the box, said end portions having side portions arranged within the box and separated from the sides of the bottom or body portion by notches having sides or edges of unequal paper is folded upon the lines 1) b the folded lengths, substantially as described, and with 1 its faces ZN) being brought together, and the creases extending" from the longer sides or I blank being further folded on the lines 0 xx, edges inwardly toward the bottom or body whereby the parts I) b are brought between 15 portion, substantially as set forth. the end wall X of the box and the edge Z) of 5 Apaper box havingaoorner-fold formed the part X all substantially as and for the from a blank having a portion a, forming one purpose hereinbefore described. side of the box, and a portion @10 forming a In testimony whereof I have hereunto subside of the box-flap, the blank being out from scribed my name.
its edge inwardly to the folding-line C to form PIIILO O. SUPER. IO the separate side portions 1: and o, the ma- 'Witnesses:
terial between the edge Z) of the part and EDWARD O. DAVIDSON,
the part 0 being folded inwardly on a line 0 MAMIE J. KELLEY.
