UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED TAYLOR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN SETTEES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,169, dated May 1, 1877; application filled August 30, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED TAYLOR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flexible Benches and I declare the following to be a full and clear description of the same, which will enable others to make use of my improved flexible benches.
The invention is an improvement upon an invention by me for which a patent was granted January 30, 1872, being numbered This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of benches or settees, so as to furnish seats fora number of persons, sitting either in a straight line or in a curved line, as may be required.
My improved flexible bench or settee is made ofa number of sections, being either of equal length or of any unequal length, as may be desired. Each section is provided with a forked foot, terminating in a pillar, on which the seat and the back, connected to the seat, rest. To the side of each pillar are fastened strips, or a single board, converging to ward each other, and provided with hinges at the end, by aid of which the sections are hinged together underneath the seats. The two end sections are only provided with these strips or .board on one side, where they are hinged together to the sections next to the same. The corners of the seats are cut away at certain angles from the een ters to the front, being hinged together at the centers. The gaps or openings so formed are covered with any desired flexible material, in order to place the sections in a straight or curved line, as
may be desired. The back-rests, which are of the-same length as the back of the seats, are also joined together with any suitable flexible material.
In order to more fully describe my invention, I refer to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Figure I is a plan view of my improved flexible bench, shown in a curved line. Fig.
II is a sectional view, representing the same Fig. III is an end view of in a straight line. the same.
A A are the sections, with seats a a, pillars b b, and forked feet 0 c, and with strips d d, hinged at c e to each other. The seats a a are formed from the center to the front in the form of a trapezoid, so as to allow them to be placed in a curved line, as shown in Fig. I, and hinged together at 9. HE is the flexible material covering'the tops of the seats where the same come together. I I are the backrests, joined together with the flexible material J at m.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- The flexible material H, when covering the angular spaces between the settees, in combination with the sections A A, hinged together, substantially'as described, and for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed this 22d day of August, 1876.
