Description
. UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JOHN K. MAYO, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEATS AND BACKS 0F CHAIRS, SETTEES, CAR-SEATS, 8L0.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,589, dated September 16, 1879 application filed August 22, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN K. MAYO, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seats and Backs of Chairs, Settees, (Jar-Seats, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to construct the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top view. Fig. 2 is across section. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a combined back and seat of a chair to which my improvements have been applied.
The object of my invention is to so construct the seats-or backs of chairs, settees, car-seats, &c., or seats and backs formed in one piece, as to combine strength and durability with elasticity and ventilation.
For this purpose the invention consists in making the seat or back, or these two formed in one piece of two or more layers or laminae of wood, such as veneers, with the grain of the different laminae laid crosswise of each other, and all cemented or glued together, and in then providing them with a series or number of slits, arranged in the manner substantially as shown in the drawings, whereby the object above referred to is effectually attained, and at very small cost.
In the drawings, A represents a seat, fastened to the frame B by tacks a. b b represent slits or slots cut or otherwise formed in the seat, which give it elasticity and ventilation.
Seat A is formed of two or more layers or veneers of wood, so laid together-that the grain of the one layer crosses that of the other or others adjoining it.
The back ofthe chair, settee, &c., is made precisely in the same way when made separately from the seat, and so is the seat and back when made in one piece.
The slits or slots Z1 1) may be cut of the same length, or of difierent lengths and widths, as taste or fancy may direct. 'These slots also give the seats and backs elasticity and ventilation without any material loss of strength to the wood.
The perforated seats and backs now in use are rigid and more liable to crack and break than the slotted seat.
My improved seat may be made more or less elastic, as desired, as the elasticity depends on the size and length of the slots and of the distance that they are apart. By placing theslots near together seat is obtained which is capable of a lateral elastic movement, as well as that resulting from direct pressure.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A seat or back, or a seat and back formed in one piece, for use in connection with chairs,
settees, car-seats, &c., constructed of two or more layers or veneers of wood glued or cemented together with the grain of the layers laid crosswise of each other, and provided with slits or slots, in the manner substantially as described. and shown, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of August, 1878.
JOHN K. MAYO.
In presence of LEWIs W. FROST, R. F. VAN BUsKERcK.
