This invention relates to looms, and more particularly to a device designed to check or retard the movement of the picker stick of the loom, to prevent breaking or damaging the picker stick by its contact with the lay, at the end of the stroke of the picker stick.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily secured in position on a loom, without the necessity of making eX tensive alterations in the loom construction, to mount the attachment.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the lay of a loom as equipped with a device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a plan view.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of a lay equipped with a device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 5 is a fragmental elevational view of a picker stick equipped with a spring or cushion device.
Figure 6 is a front elevational view of the picker stick.
Figure 7 is a fragmental el-evational view of a picker stick illustrating the means for securing the power strap to the picker stick.
Figure 8 is a sectional view through the picker stick, taken on line 88 of Figure 7.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates the lay of a loom which is formed with the usual slot to receive the picker stick 6 of the loom.
The picker stick check or buffer, forming the essence of the present invention, comprises elongated bracket members 7 arranged proceeds, the invention resides in the combi-' nation and arrangement of parts and in the on opposite sides of the slot in the lay, through which the picker stick moves. 7
These bracket members 7 are'formed with depending end portions 8 and 9 respectively, which end portions are formed with openings to receive the U shaped check or bufier 10,
which is constructed of a length of rod material bent to provide an end section 11 that spans the space between the end portions 9. Strips of leather or other cushioning material indicated at 12, are positioned near the end section 11 to be engaged by the picker stick 6, when it moves to the limit of its stroke, in one direction. I
Adjustably mountedon the buffer 10, are stops 13 against which the coiled springs 14 engage, the opposite ends of the coiled springs resting against the end portions 9, so that the buffer 10 may move against the tension'of the springs, the springs yielding under the action of the picker stick to cushion the movement of the picker stick.
The depending end members 8 are also formed with openings to receive the buffer 15 that comprises a length of rod material bent intermediate its ends to provide spaced leg members that have their forward ends seiured within the openings, by means of nuts Mounted on the leg members of the buffer 0 15, are coiled springs 17 that bear against the bar 18 mounted on the leg members, the coiled springs 17 also engaging the bar 19 that is slidably mounted on the leg members of the buffer.
This bar 19 lies in the path of travel of the picker stick as it reaches one end of its stroke, the force of the picker stick being cushioned by the movement of the bar 19 against the springs 17 that yield under the action of the picker stick.
To further cushion the movements of the picker stick, a spring member indicated by the reference character 20 is provided, one. end of the spring member being secured ad jacent to the outer end of the picker stick, the
opposite end thereof being slidably held by means of the U bolt 21. The central portion of the spring 20 is bowed to lie in spaced relation with the rear edge of the picker stick 12 a V r r 1,850,495
to cushion the movements of the picker stick to which it is secured, when the picker stick moves to the limit of one end of its stroke.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that v due to the construction shown and described,
the movements of the picker stick of a loom 'may ibevcushioned to relieve the picker stick of the sudden jar caused "by the picker stick being suddenly stopped at the ends of its stroke, to the end that the life of a picker stick is greatly increased;
Secured to the picker stick is a power strap attaching device comprising a body -portion 22 which is formed with cut out portions .of
widths to receive the power s'trap23, the cut out portions defining shoulders 24 (to engage the upper and lower edges of (the power strap a and !prevent the power "strap moving out of itsplaceson the pickenstick. i'Lclaimz" v j A ipickeristickzcheckl-forlooms, comprising a pair ofelongated bracket members formed with depending end portions, :said bracket members ibeing-secured to one side of the day 2 0f a loom :and' on'opposite sides of ithe (picker Y stick-slot of thelay,:a rod bentintermediate .-'its-lends and providing parallel legs, extendmdthroug'h the depending end 'portionsof the bracket members, coiled springs adjustably 'mounted on the legwmembers and :bearingv against oneof the dependingiends of the :re- 'speotive bracket members, the intermediate gportimixof the-rod spanning the-space'between qthe depending aend members at one 'end of \ihe bracket members ipnoviding a stop to be engaged by the picker" stick, arod 'kbent- "intermediate its ends .providing' a substantially :Uashaped stop, ithe-ends ofxthe'rod :being securedeto theopposite:dependingend members :40 (of the bracket imembersffto provide a %stop, and =coiledsprings on theilastzmentionedstop tEor musliioning "the zmovements of the :picker 2 stick. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as any town, I have hereto affixed my :signature.
