Be it known that l, Nansen C. BLAKE, a citizen of the llnited States, residing at lVoonsoe-kct in the county of Frovidence and State of llhode Island, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker-Stick Checks, of which the following is a specificatiom reference being. had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to loom attachments, and particularly to picker stick checking devices.

The general object of my invention is to provide means for retarding the movement of the picker stick at the end of its stroke so as to avoid any bending or hammering of the same when in action and to prevent any rebound of the picker stick and hold it medially disposed with relation to the lay beam.

A more particular object of this invention is to provide a picker stick check of a very simple and yet thoroughly effective character which may be easily applied to looms. has few parts, and is cheaply constructed.

lleferrinn to these drawings, it will be seen that l have illustrated the ordinary picker stick and operating mechanism of a loom, this mechanism comprising the lay beam slotted, as at 11, to permit the oscillation of the picker stick mounted. upon the supporting upright or sword 12 which is operatively connected to the usual picker stand 13. Rocking upon the upper face of this stand is the usual or conventional shoe 1%, and engaged with this shoe is the picker stick 15. The picker stick is illustrated as passing; through a slot in the shoe and into a slot 16 in the stand. The shoe it has the usual grooved, upwardly extending portion 17 wherein the tongue 18 is disposed. which extends down through the slot in the shoe and into the slot 16, this tongue being 1922. Serial No. 568,284.

Attached to the face of the picker stick is the strap 20 which passes downward over the outer face of the picker stick and over the curved lower end of the picker stick and then passes to and around the spring retracted roller 21. All of these parts are of the usual and ordinary construction.

ttached to the under face of the lay beam at each end is a plate 22* carrying a downwardly projecting bracket 22 which is longitudinally slotted at a plurality of points as at 23. Engaged with the bracket is an approximately U-shaped iron' 24 havlay beam with one picker stick and the corresponding check, but it will be understood that both ends of the lay beam are similarly constructed and provided with a similar picker stick and check. The picker stick is, of course, embraced by a leather band for that portion of the picker stick which enters the check so that the leather band will come in contact with the leather facings 28 of the check device. I am aware that checks for picker sticks have included oppositely disposed, resiliently supported checkingmembers but devices of this kind as known to me have been relatively complicated and very liable to get out of order. This device of mine is very simple and it can be readily repaired or replaced at any time. The stick is gently checked upon its backward movement, but as it moves rearward the springs exert a greater checking action and greater friction so that the picker stick is stopped without jar or shock.

While I have illustrated the check as disposed at the outer end of the slot 11, it

will be understood that two checks of the same character might be used at the inner and at the outer end of the slot but check the picker stick at both ends of its stroke,
