This invention relates to an attachment for curtain rods, and an object of the invention is to provide an ornamental member which may be readily connected with a curtain rod at any point or points in the length of the rod and without derangement of the curtain which may be supported upon said rod.

A more detailed object is to provide an attachment in the form of ornamental end pieces which may be attached on to the rod adjacent the opposite ends of the rod either before or after the curtain is threaded onto the rod.

A further detailed object is to rovide an attachment which may be easily connected with or removed from curtain rods of the well known Kirsch t pe, that is rods which have rearwardly curved end portions about which the curtain is usually threaded.

A further detailed object is to so construct the device that it will include an attaching part or parts which may be readily thrust through the material of the curtain if desired.

A further object is to so design the device that it may serve as a support for an auxiliary rod if desired.

A further object is to so design the device that it will be particularly eiiicient as an attachment upon rods which are of non-circular cross sectional contour.

Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and in which I have shown merely a preferred form of embodiment of the invention Fig. 1 is a front elevational view ofa curtain rod having a curtain thereon and fitted with ornamental end pieces in accordance with this invention.

Referring to the drawings for describing in detail the invention as illustrated therein, the reference character L indicates a curtain rod. This is shown as being of the well known Kirsch type, that is as including a main straight portion 1 for extending across the width of a window or door opening and opposite end portions 2-2 bent or curved rearwardly and provided with attaching means as 38 by which it may be connected with a window frame or other appropriate support as indicated at 4.

In use it is customary to hang a curtain the parts as 5 upon this rod by threading the rod through a hem provided at the upper edge of the curtain the opposite side edge portions as 5'5 of the curtain continuing around the end curves of the rod and onto the portions 22 of said rod.

The pieces, or attachments, with which this invention is concerned are indicated by the reference character G. They may take any desired form to provide the necessary artistic or ornamental effect, but for the purpose of the present description they may be considered each as consisting of a body or plate portion 6, of appropriate ornamental design, and an attaching portion 7.

The attaching portion is connected to the rear side of the body, and is intended to be of a type to enable the device to be readily connected with the rod either before or after the curtain is threaded onto the rod.

As suggested in the drawings Figs. 1 to 4 the attachment portion 7 consists of a length of bendable wire connected with the rear of the body, as by solder or other means, so as to provide two pin-like portions as 8 and 9 proecting rearwardly from the body in such manner that when the device is moved into position with respect to the red the pin 8 will stand beneath the rod while the pin 9 will stand above the rod, both pins being preferably pointed at their outer ends as at 10 so that they are capable of being readily thrust through the material of the curtain without any appreciable injury to the curtain.

After the pins have been thus positioned they may then be readily bent around or against the rear side of the rod, as clearly indicated in the drawings, for holding the device against subsequent displacement.

The body 6 is preferably arranged so that a preponderance of its weight lies beyond the pin 9. The in 9 thus constitutes in effect a fulcrum against the upper edge of the rod, the overhanging weight of the body tending to pivot the body in a vertical plane about said fulcrum and thus serving to hold the pin 8 pressed in a direction toward or against the under edge surface of the rod.

By this arrangement it becomes unnecessary to so bend the pins as to provide any mechanical clamping contact against the forward and rear surfaces of the rod, and in some cases it may be sufiicient simply to form the pins of Ushape as indicated by the full lines in Fig. 4, that is to omit the element of a bendable quality in the pins, and permit the device to hang freely by its pins upon the rod.

Or, one pin as the pin 9 may if desired be made of the shape shown in full lines in Fig. 4 and be non-bendable, while the other pin 8 may be straight, as shown by the dotted lines in ig. 4, and may be bendable or not.

The modification illustrated in Fig. 5 suggests the use of two separate wire-like me1n bers as 11 and 12 each having a hooked upper portion as 13 and a pin-shaped lower portion as 14. These members may be spaced apart lengthwise of the rod and in use the hooked portions 13 are set over the upper edge of the rod while the pin portions 14 are engaged about the under edge of the rod, being thrust through the material of the curtain if the curtain be present, and may be allowed to remain straight or may be bent or folded up with a clamping action against the rear surface of the rod, as may be desired. The distribution of weight in body 6 may be disregarded.

In Fig. 6'an auxiliary rod as H is illustrated. This rod may be of any ornamental contour or form and may be used or not according to the dictates of the user. It is important to note that when used this rod is held in position by means of the end pieces G, the intermediate body portion of the rod stretching as an ornament lengthwise along the front surface of the rod 1 and having its opposite ends engaging and being supported by the attaching parts of the end pieces G.

It will be understood that if desired a central ornamental. ipiece may be mounted upon the rod 1 intermediate the pieces GG and be held in position by similar means as described with respect to the pieces G. Also that such central piece may engage the central portion of the rod H and thus assist in its support.

In the modification Figs. 7 and 8 it is suggested that if desired the attaching means may consist of one or more spring clips as 15 and 16, in which instance the clips may be of general U-shape having one leg as 17 fixed to the rear surface of the plate or body 6 and having its opposite leg as 18 arranged to clamp against the rear surface of the rod. The leg 17 may be preferably provided with shoulders as 1.9 and 20 for fitting with a desirable degree of snugness about the forward face of the rod while the leg 18 is provided with a forwardly curved portion as 21 for mating to a suitable extent the hollow rear side of the rod, the legs being thus adapted to properly centre themselves, and consequently the body 6, upon the rod. The connecting portion as 22 of the clip is spaced a considerable distance above the upper edge of the rod for the purpose of affording a desirable degree of resiliency for the leg 18 and at the same time for affording a space as 23 above the rod within which may be readily accommodated the upper edge portion as 24 of the hem of the curtain.

In using this construction there is no need for penetrating the material of the curtain either above or below the rod, and yet the device may be readily attached while the curtain is in position.

If desired a hookas 29 may be provided projecting rearwardly of the body at a point above the rod for receiving the end of the bent pin 28 therein to assist in holdin the pin, and consequently the body, infirm clamping engagement with the rod.

In some instances it may be desirable to,

make the pin 28 of a permanently bent form, it being in this case inserted loosely through an opening as 30 provided to receive it through the body 6, the free end of the pin hus servwith the rod as before. In using this form the body 6 is first placed in position against the forward surface of the rod, and of the curtain if the curtain be present, the loose pin 28 being thereupon thrust through the opening 30, and through the curtain, and finally caught into the heel: 29. The. pin will of course be suitably headed.

In the modification Figs. 13 and 14 the fastening device consists of a simple hook shaped member 31 having a threaded for ward end 3'2 projecting through an opening as 33 provided in the body 6, the extending portion being fitted with an ornamental nut as 34. The body 6 is suitably raised as at 35 to accommodate the hook member 31, portions of the body, as at 36-86, adjacent the hook however being in position to rest against the rod, or against the curtain, as heretofore, and the hook 81 is arranged to extend about the upper edge of the rod and downwardly along the rear surface of the rod so that by adjustment of the nut Sthe hook will press against the rear surface of the rod and in consequence press the body against the forward surface of the rod thus holding the structure firmly connected with the rod. 7

It is to be noted that the devices as shown are particularly adapted to provide a holding grip upon curtain rods which are of noncircular cross sectional contour. The spring clips of Figs. 7 and 8 for instance are care fully designed so that their substantially straight legs snugly fit to the front andbarck substantially flat and parallel faces, thus utilizing the non-circular contour of the rod to prevent any movement of the device rotatably about the rod.

As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanyin drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An attachment for curtain rods, said attachment consisting of a body member intended to overlie a forward surface portion of the rod, means to connect said body with the rod comprising a plurality of pins extending rearwardly of the body, and one of said pins being positioned to extend across the upper ed e portion of the rod, another of said pins being positioned to extend across the under edge of the rod, at least one of said pins being pointed at its rear end adapting it to be thrust through the material of a curtain supported upon the rod, and said pointed pin being bendable and adapted thereby to be bent about the rear surface of the rod.

2. An attachment for curtain reds, said at" tachnient consisting of a body member intended to overlie a forward surface portion of the rod, means to connect said body with the rod comprising a plurality of pins extending rearwardly of the body, one of said pins being positioned to extend across the upper edge portion of the rod, another of said pins being positioned to extend across the underedge of the rod, and the lower pin being pointed at its end adapting it to be readily thrust through the material of a curtain supported upon the rod and said lower pin having a part to engage a relatively rear portion of the-rod. An attachment for curtain rods, said attachment consisting of a body member intended to overlie a forward surface portion of the rod, means to connect said body with the rod comprising a plurality of pins eX- tending rearwardly of the body, one of said pins being'positioned to extend across the upper ed 'e p0 tion of the rod, another of said pins being positioned to extend across the under edge of the-rod, the lower pin being pointed at its end adapting it to be readily thrust through the material of a curtain supported upon the rod, and at leastone of said pins being bendable and adapted to be bent about the rear surface of the rod.

l; An attachment for curtain rods, said attachment consisting of a body member intended to overlie a forward surface portion of the rod, means to connect said body with therod comprising a pair of members conits neeted with the bod providing hooks spaced apart at the rear of the body adapted to engage over the rod at points spaced along the ength of the rod, and said members also providing pins projecting rearwardly from the bod arranged to extend beneath the lower e ge of the rod at points spaced longitudinally of the rod and said pins being bendable and adapted to be bent into engagement with the rear surface of the rod for holding said hooks against displacement.

5. A device intended to be connected to a curtain rod where the rod is of non-circular cross-sectional contour providing relatively broad and flat vertical front and rear surfaces and relatively narrow top and bottom edge surfaces, said device being intended as an ornament for the front face of the rod readily attachable and detachable from the rod, said ornamental device consisting of a bod having a portion providing a substantial y flat rear face adapted to rest against the front flat face of the rod, and said body having a pair of other portions projecting rearwardly therefrom readily manually bendable and arranged in planes one above the other so as to extend respectively above and below the top and bottom edge faces of the rod being of a length to project beyond the rear face of the rod whereby the projecting portions are adapted to be readily manually bent about the top and bottom and rear faces of the rod to constitute means by which the body is connected non-rotatably with the rod and readily releasable from the rod by unbending of said projecting portions.

6. A plurality of separately formed devices intended to be connected to a curtain rod where the rod is of non-circular crosssectional contour providing relatively broad and flat vertical front and rear faces and relatively narrow top and bottom edge faces, said devices being intended as ornaments spaced apart along the length of the front face of the rod readily attachable and detachablcsaid ornamental devices each comprising body portions having substantially flat rear faces adapted to rest against the front flat face of the rod, each of said devices havin a portion projecting rearwardly there rom arranged to extend across and beyond the upper edge face of the rod and ing readily manually bendable so that the parts rojecting beyond said edge faces are bendable downwardly about the rear face, each of said devices having another portion projecting rearwardly therefrom spaced in a plane below the first-mentioned portions arranged to extend across and beyond the bottom-edge face of the rod and being readily manually bendable so that the parts projecting beyond said bottom-edge face are bendableiupwardly about the rear face, said rearwardly projecting portions constituting means by which the devices are connected non-rotatably with the rod and readily releasable from the rod independently of each other by unbending of the projecting portions.

7. A plurality of separatel formed devices intended to be connects to a curtain rod where the rod is of non-circular cross sectional contour providing relatively broad and flat vertical front and rear faces and relatively narrow top and bottom edge faces, said devices bein intended as ornaments for the front face of the rod readily attachable and detachable, one of said devices consisting of a member providing a substantially flat rear face adapted to rest against the front flat face of the rod, and said member having a pair of other portions projecting rearwardly therefrom readily manually bendable and arranged in planes one above the other so as to extend respectively above and below the top and bottom edge faces of the rod being of a length to roject beyond the rear face of the rod whereliy the projecting portions are adapted to be readily manually bent about the top and bottom and rear faces of the rod to constitute means by which the body is connected non-rotatably with the rod and readily releasable from the rod by unbending of said projecting portions, and another of said devices consisting of a member overlying the front face of the rod and having a portion extending into position interposed between the rear face of said first device and the front face of the rod so as to be held in position by the connection of said first device with the rod.
