This invention relates to a combined map and scrubbing brush.

An object of this invention is to provide a combined mop and scrubbing brush of the character described which may be used either as a scrubbing brush or as a mop, and which necessitates only simple manipulation to effect the change from one to the other.

A further object of this invention is to provide a rugged and durable article of the character described, which is extremely simple to manipulate, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and yet practical and efficient to a high degree in use.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements. and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim.

In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,

Referring now in detail to the drawing, I 0 designates a mop and scrubbing brush embodying the invention. The same comprises an elongated handle or stick II. Fixed on the end of the handle is a T-shaped member l2 having a central socket portion I3 receiving said end of said handle and a head portion I4 disposed at 40 right angles to the handle, and extending to opposite sides thereof. Said portion I4 is channel shaped. The outer surface of the portion I4 is curved inwardly as shown at I5. The outer ends of said portion I4 are notched as at I6 for the purpose hereinafter appearing.

Surrounding the lower end of the handle II, and the socket portion I3 of the member I2, is a coil compression spring I8. The outer end of the coil abuts the member I2. Any suitable means may be used to attach said end of said spring to the socket I3, and said socket to the handle. Hinged to the upper end of the coil I8 as at 20, is a hand lever 21 of curved cross section having ears 22 partially surrounding the handle. The ears are perforated, as at 25. Hinged to the lever2l is a wire frame 26 having a portion 21 parallel to the headportion I4 of the member I2, and extending lengthwise of the inwardly curved surface I5 in opposed relation thereto. Extending rearwardly from the frame portion'2'I, are parallel portions 30, extending through the notches I6 in the portion I4 of said member I2. Extending from said parallel portions 30 are inwardly curved portions 3| having hooks 32 at the ends thereof engaging within the perforations 25 in the ears 22.

The spring I8 normally pushes the frame 26 upwardly on the handle to press the portion 21 of said frame toward the inwardly curved surface I5. The notches I6 provide guides for the frame. Upon turning the end lever 2| downwardly, the frame is released.

The mop 35 has its intermediate portion 36 passing between the portion 21 of the frame 26 and the portion I4 of the member I2. The spring I8 normally serves to clamp the mop to said member I2 when the mop is used alone.

As shown in the drawing however, there is fixed to the mop a two part adaptor or clamp 4|] for holding scrubbing brush M. The adaptor or clamp 40 comprises a member 42 made of fiat sheet metal, having a horizontal portion 44 from which there extends upwardly a wall portion 45. Extending outwardly from said portion 45 is a central tongue 46 and extending rearwardly from said portion 45, and on opposite sides of said portion 46, are a pair of aligned tongues 41. Extending downwardly from the rear of said portion 44, is a portion 48 terminating in a forwardly extending ledge 49. Said wall portion 48 has a central opening 50 for the purpose hereinafter appearing.

Said adaptor member 42 may be assembled with the mop in the following manner. The portion I4 of the member I2 is inserted between the tongues 41 and the wall 44, and in contact with the wall 45. The wire frame is passed over and beneath the tongue 46. The intermediate portion 36 of the mop passes between the portion 21 of the wire frame 26, and the wall 45. The tongue 46 is disposed directly above said intermediate portion 36 of the mop. When the spring and wire frame are in a position of Fig. 1, said spring serves to assemble the mop with the member 42.

The second adaptor member 5| is made of an elongated strip of metal, and has a vertical portion 53, contacting the inner central surface of the wall 48, and is formed with a longitudinal slot 54. Extending forwardly from the portion 53 is a horizontal portion 56 terminating in a downwardly and inwardly curved ledge or hook 59 disposed in opposed relation to ledge 49. The member 5| may be assembled with the member 42 by means of a bolt 60 passing through slot 54 and opening 50. The position of the member 5| may be adjusted by reason of the slot 54. The books or ledges 59 and 49 serve to grip the scrubbing brush 4| therebetween.

If it is desired to use the scrubbing brush alone with the handle, the mop 35 may be withdrawn, and the frame 26 will then serve to clamp the adaptor directly to the T-shaped member l2.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A brush holder for attachment to a bail-type mop holder comprising a first fiat sheet metal member having a horizontally extending portion and an apertured wall extending downwardly from the front edge of said horizontally extending portion and normal thereto, a short second wall portion extending upwardly from the rear edge of said horizontally extending portion, said second wall portion having a horizontal tongue extending rearwardly therefrom and a pair of spaced aligned horizontal end tongues extending forwardly of said second wall in vertical spaced relationship to said horizontally extending portion, a second elongated sheet metal member comprising a horizontal section and an apertured upwardly extending section at one end thereof and a downwardly extending flange at the other end thereof, means passing throughthe apertures in said first and second members and securing them in opposed cooperating relationship, said flange and said downwardly extending wall having means thereon adapted to support a brush back therebetween and said tongues adapted for attachment to said mop holder.
