SHADE AND CURTAIN BRACKET.

Application led January 10, 1922. Serial No. 528,329.

An object of my invention is to providea bracket which can be readily adjusted for use with windows of various widths, and which has means whereby it may be detachably secured on a window frame without the use of nails, screws or other fastening means which require the employment of tools, and which tend to mar or disgure the window frame.

A further object of my invention 1s to provide a bracket of the character described which may be applied without the assistance of skilled labor and which includes sup` porting members relatively arrangedin such a manner as to preclude the possibility thata shade and curtain or like drapery supported thereon may hang improperly.

A still further object of my invention is to provide a bracket of the character described which is simple in construction, readily applied and removed, and thoroughly effective for the purpose intended.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly outlined in the appended claims.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 denotes a portion of a conventional window casing or frame having an upper or head member 2 fashioned to provide the usual enlarged portion 3 extending the length thereof Vat its upper edge. In carrying my invention into effect, I provide a pair of clamps indicated at K1 and K2 respectively. The clamp K1 comprises cooperating jaw members 4 and 5 which can be adjusted relatively to engage the upper or head frame member 2 at the upper and lower edges thereof. To this end, the jaw member 4 is kmade ofl a material having spring qualities formed to provide a straight bar-like shank portion 6 and an integral arcuate or substantially U- shaped portion 7 at the upper end thereof, which arcuate or substantially U-shaped portion is of greater extent than a semi-"f circle and has the major portion of the body thereof disposed laterally to the plane of the shank portion and the free end portion thereof extending through the plane of the shank portion to terminate laterally of the latter. The arcuate portion is adapted to `embrace the forwardly projecting portion of the enlargement 3 when the shank portion 6 is disposed parallel to the face of the head member 2 and adjacent thereto. The shank portion 6 is formed with the lon,- gitudinal median portion thereof raised and provided with a .guide slot 8. The jaw member 5 has a bar-like shank portion 9 formed with the longitudinal median portion thereof raised to have a sliding fit with the under surface of the shank 6 and being bent at its lower end into U-shape, as ind-. cated at 10. A bolt 11 carried by the shank 9 extends through the guide slot 8 and a thumb nut 12 in threaded engagement therewith may be manipulated to lock the Shanks 6 and 9 against movement relatively and yclamp K1 has secured thereon a laterally extending arm 13. The shank 9' of the jaw member 5 of the clampK2 has secured thereon an arm 14 which is precisely identical in construction with the arm 13 but which eX- tends in the direction opposite to that in which the arm 13 extends. A pair of arms have right angular portions 16 t'ormed with turned-over edge portions adapted to slidingly embrace the arms 13 and 14. @ne of the arms 15 is mounted on the arm 13 and the other arm 15 is mounted on the arm 1er., whereby the arms 15 extend in parallelism and at right angles to the arms 13 and 141,

when the clamps K1 and K2 are applied to the upper member of the window iframe 1, as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 1.

One of the arms 15 is provided with an opening therethrough adjacent to its end, and the other arm 15 is provided with an open slot or notch in its upper edge, whereby a shade roller 17 may be arranged with the studs at the end thereof in engagement with the arm 15 in the usual manner, whereby the shade rollerv 17 will be supported parallel to the face of the upper or head member 2 ot the frame and adjacent thereto.

It is desirable that the means tor supporting` 'a curtain or drapery for the window should be associated with the shade roller supporting means in such a manner that the curtain or drapery will hang free ot the shade and in parallel relation thereto. With this object in view, the curtain or drapery supporting member included in the embodiment of the invention now preferred by me, comprises two telescopic sections 18 and 19, each being of U-shape in cross sectional contour. One end of the section 19 has a sliding tit with the adjacent end of the section 18 and the sections have right angular portions 20 and 21 .respectively at their remote ends. The shorter arms or' the sections are arranged .with the arms 15 received in the ends thereof and are provided with slots, such as indicated at 22, which slots are positioned in registry with the openings through thearms 15. 'It will thus be manifest that the longer arms of the curtain supportingmeans, one of which is telescoped Within the other, will be supported in parallel relation to the shade roller 17 and that a curtain or drapery 23. depending therefrom, will hang parallel with a. shade 24 carried by the roller 17 and will be spaced from such shade in such manner as to permit free functional movement o'f the shade and to insure that the curtain or drapery will hang properly.

From the foregoing description of thevarious parts of the device,the operation thereot' may be readily understood. In applying the device, the jaw members 1 and 5 are adjusted so `that the elf-ective distance between the aws is slightly lessthan the width of the upper or head frame member f2. T he U- shaped portion 7 ot the bracket K1 is hooked over the upper edge of the member 2 and a stress is placed on the U-shaped portion of the spring aw member until the clamp K1 is elongated sufficiently to permit orn the U- shaped portion 10 ot the lower jaw member being moved into engagement with the frame member 2 at the lower edge of the latter. lfvlhen the stress is removed, the clamp K1 will be firmly secured on the frame member 2 and will be releasably held thereon by the action ot the spring jaw member. The clamp K2 is now secured en the upper 'trame member Z at a spaced distance from the clamp lil and in the same manner. rlhe shade roller 17 and the curtain supporting member are now mounted upon the arm 15 in the manner described.

1t will thus be apparent that I provide a simple, relatively inexpensive, and effective means for holding a shade and a drapery in desirable relative positions with respect to each other and to a window frame. The clamp of the device can be applied to or detached from the frame without the -use of any tools and without marring the-inish of the trame or injuring the trame in any Vmanner.

adapted to engage with the lower edge ot the head member of a window trame "and the jaw portion ot the other of said mem-` bers being bowed laterally' of the plane ot its shank and-being adapted to be hooked upon the window frame head member to engage at its extremity with the upper edge of said head member, the jaw portion of said second named clamping member eX- tending along an are of a circle of greater extent than a semi-circle, whereby the shank of said second-named clamping member will be inclined downwardly slightly in a direction away from the face of said head member of the window frame, a pair of alined horizontal arms carried by the first named members of said clamps, a pair of shade roller supporting arms respectively slidably supported on said horizontal arms, said shade roller supporting arms being continuously in parallel relation and being movable along said horizontal arms to vary the distance between said shade roller supporting arms, and a substantially U-shaped extensible curtain supporting rod having parallel end portions respectively slidably engaging the shade roller supporting arms and being supported on the latter.
