rlhis invention relates toahair brush, andZ has for. its object'to provide, 1n a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of such class of the hinged handle type capable of'bemg fil folded compactly and latched when not in use and further capable of being extended and hitched in extended position for use.
A further object ofthe invention is-to pro- Vice, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a foldable hair brush having the elements thereof provided with compartments for-the purpose of storing toilet articiesv and with the compartments so arrangedwhereby convenient access can be hadthereto when occasion requires.
With the foregoing and other obJects 1n View the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement ofv parts as hereinafter more specificallyA Adescribed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the inventiombut it is to be understoodthat changes, variations and modifications can be resorted of the claims hereunto appended.
in the drawings wherein like reference characters denote correspondingparts throughout the several views:
Figure l is a sectional plan of a-hair brush in accordance with this invention, lookingtowards the back of the brush.
Figure 2 is a plan viewlookingtowards the vback of thebrush Whengfolded.
Figure 3 is an elevation partly in section of the brush When extended and further 1llustrating one ofthe sections ofthe brushr head extended at right angles to the remaining portion of the head and' handle.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the brush when folded and further illustrating in dotted lines the handle extended upwardly with respect to the head of the brush.
Figure 5 is a cross sectional View of thek brush when folded.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view in top plan illustratingv one of the sections of the brush head shifted to open position so thatV access can be had to the compartments formed in the brush head.
to which fall Within the scope FigureV 7`; is form.
lan end.V vieiv ofithe modified Figure 8 is a vieW look-ing towardsthe freegend of thehandle.
A brush 1n accordance `Withzthis invention includes a head referred to generally atl and;
a-handle referredto generally at?, and which ishinged as at '3 to the inner endof the head1.
Freferabiyethe head 12 will be of oval'contour and it includes a bristlelcarrying section 3f, acompartment section tanda cover: section 5": forthe compartment section 4. The
The innerfaceof section 5 isprovidedwith a compartment 10 in which is securedi a mirroiyll, the latter-extending from theinner face ofsection 10. The mirror is ofthe beve-lied edge type and when the section- 5 is mounted to close the compartment '7 the mirrorllf engages the beveled Wall 8 ofthe compartment 7. See Figure 5. The mirror also acts as a means toV close the recesses 8', 9.
The section 5 is hinged at'` one side and` intermediate its ends, as-at`-12 tothe section 4'. The section 5 means as indicatedfat 13, 14'to'p'rovide a latchfor detachably securing the section 5 in closure position with .respect to the compartment 7 y The hinge connections betiveen the head l and section 4 have coac'ting and handle 2 and which are.indicated at 3 are securedto section 4 andare positioned against theinner endl edge of sectionl 5 'When the latter sectionv` is l'atched to section 4.: The` section 4 between the hingeconnections 3.,. is
provided with asocket l5 for a purpose to be presently referredto, The recesses 8.', 9 9b are` adapted to4 contain any suitableA toilet preparationsl The?, hinged endof the handle Ziscon-- Gamed,A as indicated ati 1-.7 and conforms: in Contour tothe curvature cfs the :innen ends of section 4. The hinged connections 3 extend upon the back of handle 2.
The handle 2 is formed With a longitudinally extending compartment 18 which opens at the free end of handle 2 and in which is adapted to be stored toilet implements such as a comb and a file as indicated at 19, 20 respectively.
Oarried hy the outer end of the handle 2 is a closure 21 for the open outer end of the compartment 18, and said closure and section 4 of the head carry coacting means as indicated at 22, 23 for latching the handle'2 in folded position with respect to the headv 1.
The inner end of handle 2 is provided With a socket 24 which is adapted to register with the socket 15 and slidahly mounted in the socket 24 is a spring controlled latching bolt 25 which engages in socket 15 for the purpose i of maintaining the handle 2 in extended osition with respect to the head 1. See igure 3. The controlling spring for the holt 25 is indicated at 26. The handle 2 is formed with an opening 27 through which i extends a combined stop and finger piece 28 which provides means for shifting the bolt 25 from out of the socket 15 and also acts as a means to limit the shift of the bolt 25 due to the action of the spring 24.
The means designated 13 is in the form of a spring latch and the means designated 14 is a keeper which coacts with the latch 13.
The means indicated at 22 is in the form of a' resilient latch which co-operates With the means 23, the latter being the keeper for the latch 22.
In the modified form shown in Figure 7 the brush head comprises a section 29 which corresponds to section 3 of the head 1, a section 30 which corresponds to section 4 of the head 1 and a section 31 which corresponds to the section 5 of the head 1. The handle 32 is hinged as at 33 to section 31 in the form of hrush head shown in Figure 7. The sec,- tion 31 has its outer face provided with a longitudinally extending channel 34 in which seats the handle 32 when the latter is folded relatively to the brush head indicated generally at in Figure 7. Otherwise than that as stated the form shown in Figure 7 is the same as that shown in Figure 1.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a folding hair brush a head element including a pair of sections hinged together at one side and having coacting means at the other side for latching them together, one of said sections providing a compartment and the other section a closure for said compartment, a handle for folding upon the head element, means connected to and projecting at right angles from that section providing the compartment and independent of said other section for hinging the handle to the inner end of that section providing the compartment, said means opposing the inner end of the said other sections when the latter is in compartment closing position, and means for latching the handle in an extended position With respect to the head element, and means for latching the handle in Jfolded position With respect to the head element.
2. VA foldable hair brush including a head element, a handle provided With a compartment, releasable means carried by said handle for normally closing the compartment therein, means for hinging the inner end of the handle to the inner end of said element, said releasalole means carried by the outer end of the handle, said handle being foldable upon the head element, means for latching the handle in extended positions With respect to suoli element, and means at the outer ends of said element and handle for latching the handle When folded upon the head element to the latter.
3. In a folding hair brush a head element including a section formed With a compartment and a shiftable closure for said compartinent, a handle for folding upon said closure, means secured to the inner end -of said section for hinging the handle to the head element, said meansbeing free of connection to and opposing the inner end of the closure when the latter is in compartment closing position, means for detachably connecting the handle in an extended position with respect to the head element, and means for detachably connecting the handle to the head element When the handle is folded upon said closure.
