UNITED STATES? PATENT OFFICE.
COLLAPSIBLE GOCART.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14; 1922.
Application-filed July 27, 1821. Serial No. 487,862.
To all: whom it may concern 7 Be it'known that I; Gnonon Bi Scaunnrr, a citizen of the UnitediStates, residing at Kennettv Square. county. of Chester, and State of Pennsylvania. have invented acertain new and useful Collapsible Gocart, of which the following is aspecificat-ion.
This invention generally stated relates to go-carts and has more especial relation to a device of this kindwhich iscollapsible so that when notinuse it may befolded intocompact form so asto be readily carried by the owner in trolley-cars, railroad cars and the like.
The leading object of the present inventionis to provide a device ofth'is character possessed of certain novel features whereby when in use it functions efficiently as a gocart and when properly folded to be carried by the owner is symbolic of a so-called dress-suit case in which may be carried not only the go-cart wheels,- seat, handle and like parts but in which may be carried small parcels as for instance lunches, and childrens wearing apparel. f )ther and further objects of the present invention reside in the provision of certain novelarrangements, connections, and combinations of parts for attaining the results sought by saidleading object.
The invention consists ofythe improvements hereinafter described and finally The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof. a nd in which:
Fig. 1, is a perspective view of a ro-cart embodying features of the present invention.
Fig. 2, is asiinilar view illustrating the manner of folding the parts, and
Fig. 3, is a central, sectional view of the go-cart. c
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown inthe accompanying drawings one form thereofwhich is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
engage with Generally stated the device may be said to consist primarily of a box-like structure, having a lid or cover, a pair of'wheels and a handle for the box and a seat for the lid or cover which partsin assembled'position provide a light, durable and efficient gocart'and which box-like structure including its lid or cover are adapted to receive the seat, wheels and handle when the parts are in knock-down position. drawingsin detail, 1 0 designates a box-like structure of any suit-abl material which is light yet durable. 11 designates a lid or cover therefor, which is of shallow. traylike form. In practice the parts 10 and 1.1 are, exteriorly considered symbolic ofa so-called dress-suit case. The lid 11 has hinged relation with the box 10 as clearly shown in Fig. 1.. In practice the lid is so arranged that it may be foldedover upon the box bottom as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 or folded over upon the box top as shown in Fig. 2. For this purpose strap hinges iaving double joints are provided. 1 and 13 designate the hinge-joints and let the hinge-straps. In order to secure the lid to the box in either of the above positions, hinge-joints 15 are secured to the box, connected with which are hinge-strings 16. The latter are each provided with a slot 17 at their free ends. Pivoted to the cover 11 are buttons 18 adapted to co-operatively the slots of the hinge-straps 16. That side of the box provided with the hinge-straps 16 is equipped with a handgrip 19 of any desired form. Interiorly con sidered each end of the box 10 is provided with grooved ways '20 which extend from the bottom to the top of said box. o-operatively engaging these ways are slides 21 journalled to which are the go-cart wheels 22 of which there are two. Since the slides 21 are of duplicate form a description of one will suffice. A slide is of elongated. sub stantially rectangular configuration and is provided at its outer end with stops 23 and at its inner end with trunnions 2d. Adjacent each trunnion the slide is cut away as at 25 to afford clearance whenv the slide is moved from operative position as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, to inoperative position shown in Fig. 2. Assuming that the device is in knock-down position, as shown in Fig. 2
a u I the trunnions 2% are in engagement with thegrooved ways 20, the remaining portions of the slides being free of said ways. By swinging outward the wheels untll the Referring to the section28 of a knock-down handle.
dle. Upon that side of the box 10 to which.
the cover is hinged is a socket 26 which is located adjacent'the box top and is provided with a thumb-screw 27. Adapted to en- I gage within said socket and be secured by said thumb-screw is a pin 31 carried'by The free end of said section is tapered to engage a socket 32 carried by the sides of the box opposite that rarrying socket 26.
Hinged to section 28 is a section 29 and hinged to section 29 is another section 30. lhe sections are slightly curvedas shown so as to pro1ect upwardly when the go-cart is in assembled position at which time socket 26 is vertically disposed and socket 32horizontally disposed. Section 29 of the handle has hinged thereto a rest to prevent the free end of the handle from contacting with the ground when the go-eart is not being used. In asseinblying the parts as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. the box is inverted and the lid or cover swung over so as to rest upon the bottom of box 10 in inverted position. Located within the-tray-like lid or cover 11, is a rectangular'member 3st. forming a seat and preferably having cushioned relation with the lid. In the drawings pins 35 are fixed to the lid andmemberB L is apertured as at 36 in alignment with said pins and sprlngs 37 are coiled around said pins 7 between the seat bottom and the cover top.
Having hinged relation. with the seat are side-pieces 3 8 and 38'. the side-pieces are relatively h1gh,.1t is'necessary to fold one over upon the other as shown in Fig. 2, in which case a SllI1p39 is secured to member 34- and side-piece 1s hinged thereto.
Having hinged relation as at 4.1- with the member 84: is a back-rest 40. In folding the parts, side-piece is folded over npon member 34-, back-rest 4:0 folded over upon said side-piece and side-piece 38 folded over upon the back-rest as shown in Fig. 2..
. so that the wheels and handle within the 'TSGCHIGd to place by hinge-straps 16 the device is symbolic of a suit-case and may be readily carried from place to place by means of hand-grip 1.9. In practice the material-employed is light in weight and the parts may readily and expeditiously assembled and collapsed. Since the device in knock-down position is of the same general shape of a suit-case'it is very convenient forcarriage in trolley and railroad cars, automobiles, steam-boats and the like where space is at a premium.
It willnow be apparent that I have devised -a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown side-pieces and a back-rest for'sai'd lid." wheels secured to said box and capable of' being folded over into said boxand a sectional handle detach-ably secured to said box.
2. A constructionas described in claim 1, characterized by means for securing the lid to the box in closed and open position. 7
3. A construction as described in claim 1, characterized by said seat having cushioned relation with said lid. 1
a. A construction as'described in claim characterized by grooved ways within box and slides carrying said wheels movable;
through said ways.
9i construction as pliable. baclr-rest for said seat. I
(3. A construction as described in claim 1. characterized by 'said handle being generally curved and means within said box to which said handle is detachably secured. w 7
'4. A construction as described in claini l,'
characterized by a hand-grip for said box.
8. A construction as described in claini' 1, characterized by hinge-strapssecuring said lid to said box. v
9. A construction as described in claim 1, characterized by additional hinge-straps secured to said box and means carried by said lid for engaging said hinge-straps in the closed position of said lid.
10. A construction as described in claim 1, 7
characterized by said'handle being made up of hinged sections;
11. Aconstruction as described in claim 1 in which the device in folded 7 symbolic of a suit-case. In testimony whereof, I have signed my'name.
