My invention relates to hoisting mechanisms, and more particularly to relatively smallportablethoisting mechanisms of the self-contained type.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved hoisting mechanism. Another object of my invention is to provide an improved'hoisting mechanism of the self-contained type. A further object of my invention is to provide an improved hoisting mechanism Which shall be readily controllable and have driving mechanism operative to drive the drum thereof or to interrupt its driving while .the 'motor of the hoisting mechanism is operating. Other objects and advantages of my machine will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration two forms which myv invention-may assumein practice.
In these drawings,-

In the form of my invention which I have elected to show for purposes of illustration I have shown a drum 1 uponwhich a rope is to be wound and which'is provided adjacent one end thereof with a braking surface 2 with which a manually controllable brake 3 cooperatesto retard or interrupt rotation I V of the drum at will. IThe drum at its oppo- I site end is provided with a head 4 upon which a collar 5 is-formed. This collar is ournaled as at 6 .in a hanger 7 formed upon a support ing frame 8. The latter at its opposite end is provided with a second hanger=9 in which there is keyed, and so held against rotation,

and in the form of invention shown in Fig. 1 motive fluid from a passage 17 is car ried through a hollow bore 24 formed in the sha.ft.22.- A member 23 is journaled externally in the member 5 .previously described and is keyed to the member 36 to be described hereafter. The member 23 supports a brake 'drum 25 with which amanually controlled the outside of the housing 12 upon the head 18 thereof. The pinion 29 intermeshes with an internal gear '31 formed in the member 10 and upon rotation of the pinion 28 the pinion 29'is driven and it, by its coaction with the stationary internal gear 31, causes the motor housing to rotate ata reduced rate equal to the-product of the number of revolutions of the pinion 28 multiplied by the ratio of the number of teeth on the pinion 28 to the number of teeth on the internal gear 31. Atthe opposite 'endof the housing 12 there will be notedto be a pinion 32 which is keyed to-the shaft 22 and which meshes with a pair of gears 33 and 33 which are journa-led on stubshafts 34 and 34.. These stub shafts are carried on and secured to a member 35'which in turn has a sleeve member 36 interposed between the member 23 and the shaft 22, but rigidly lockedas by a key 36' to the member 23. The gears 33 and 33 also mesh With an internal gear 37 which isformed on or may be secured in any appropriate manner to the interior periphery of the drum. It will be noted that as the motor housing 12 rotates, the pinion 32 will be rotated and, assuming that the member 25 and the member 35 are held stationary, the pinions 33 and 33will-rotate upon stationary ingi 1-2 is provided withlahead '18 which car- 7 equal to the product of the number of revolutions of the pinion 32 multiplied by the ratio of the number of teeth on the pinion 32 to the number 01 teeth on the internal gear 37.
As, in the form of my invention shown in Fig. l, a rotating joint will be necessary between the supply connections 17 and the shaft and as some difiiculty might be experienced, due to the fact that there would be no support for the member to which the supply connection would be made, it may be preferable to make a connection to the opposite end of the device as indicated in Fig. 2. Any suitable exhaust may be employed.
From the foregoing description the mode of operation of this device will be so clear that it requires no detailed explanation. VJ ion the brake 26 is applied and the brake 3 released, the motor housing 12 which is being rotated as a result of the supply of air to the rotors 13 and 14, will rotate the gear 32, drive the pinions 33 and 33', and so by means of the gear 37 will rotate the drum 1. If the brake 3 be applied and the brake 26 released, the members and will be rotated while the drum may remain stationary or even be manually or otherwise rotated in the opposite direction to unwind a cable wound thereon.
I'Vhile I have in this application specifically described one form and a modification which my invention may assume in practice, it is to be understood that these forms of the same are shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a hoisting mechanism, a drum and supporting means therefor comprising a motor disposed within said drum and including intermeshing rotors rotatable on axes parallel to the axis of said drum, a stationary gear, a pinion operatively connected to said motor and meshing with said stationary gear, driving connections between said pinion and one of said rotors, a pinion coaxial with said drum axis and operatively connected to said motor, a gear secured to said drum, and driving connections between said last mentioned pinion and gear.
2. In a hoisting mechanism, a drum and supporting means therefor comprising a motor disposed within said drum and including intermeshing rotors rotatable on axes parallel to the axis of said drum, a stationary gear, a pinion operatively connected to said motor and meshing with said stationary gear, driving connections between said pinion and one of said rotors, a pinion coaxial with said drum axis and secured to said motor, a gear secured to said drum, and driving connections between said last mentioned pinion and gear, including at least one pinion rotatable upon an axis which may be held stationary or released for orbital rotation about the axis of said drum when desired.
8. In a hoisting mechanism, a rotatable drum, a drum driving motor comprising a motor casing, intermeshing rotors rotatable on axes parallel to the axis of said drum, and means whereby said motor casing is rotatably driven from one of said rotors during rotation thereof about its axis and during the winding operation of said drum, and operative driving connections between the motor casing and the drum, said motor casing rotating at a speed less than the rotors and greater than the drum.
In a hoisting mechanism, spaced supporting means, a rotatable drum, a drum driving motor comprising a motor casing and intermeshing rotors rotatable on axes parallel to the axis of said drum, and means whereby said motor casing is rotatably driven from one of said rotors during rotation thereof about its axis and during the winding operation of said drum, said motor casing rotating at a speed less than the rotors and greater than the drum, and operative driving connections between the motor casing and the drum, said drum and motor having operative supporting connection with said sup porting means.
5. In a hoisting mechanism, a hoisting drum, a driving motor therefor disposed therein and comprising a housing and a plu rality of directly cooperating rotors therein, and positively connected driving means operative to effect driving of said motor housing by the rotation of one of said rotors on its axis, and reduction gearing between the motor housing and the drum.
6. In a hoisting mechanism, a hoisting drum, a driving motor therefor disposed therein and comprising a housing and a plurality of directly cooperating rotors therein, positive driving connections at one end of the housing operative to GiIQCi] driving of said motor housing by the rotation of one of said rotors, and reduction gearing between the motor housing and the drum disposed at the opposite end of said housing.
7. In a hoistin mechanism, a drum carrying a gear and means for driving said drum including a motor having a casing rotatable about the axis of and relative to said drum during driving thereof, driving connections between said motor and its casing, a--drum driving gear driven by the motor casing, supporting means for said drum driving gear supporting the same for orbital movement about the common axis of the drum and mo tor and for rotation on its own axis, and means cooperating with said supporting means for holding the latter to prevent orbital movement of said drum driving gear,

In a holstmg-mechanism, a drum'and driving means=therefor ncluding a motor having a rotatable housing disposed at least partially within said drum, means actuated by said motor for effecting rotationofcsaid housing disposed atone end of the latter, and means, for producing rotation of 'said drum'relative to saidhousing driven bythe flatter and comprising gearing disposed at the "other end of said housing andlocated substantially within an area, the radial limits ofvvhich' are sub'stantiallyequal to the outer limits of said=housing and in alinement therewith.

In a hoisting mechanism, a drum carrying a gear, and driving means therefor including a rotary motor having a rotatable casing, a reaction member, and two driving pinions arranged at opposite ends of said casing, one of said driving pinions being operatively connected with said reaction menther to produce rotation of said motor casing and the other of said pinions being operatively connected to the gear carried by said drum to drive said drum.

In a hoisting mechanism, a rotatable drum, a motor, and means for producing rotation of said drum by said motor comprising a reaction member, a set of reduction gearing at each end of said motor, one of said sets connecting the drum with the motor and the other set connecting said reaction memher with the motor and including an orbitally movable gear cooperating with said reaction member, and drive control means governing the operation of one of said sets of gearing to permit running of said motor while the drum remains stationary.

In a hoisting mechanism, a drum, a driving motor therefor having a rotatable casing extending therein and movable relative thereto, means for efiecting rotation of said drum by said motor comprising a reaction member and two sets of reduction gearing, one of said sets connecting the drum with the motor and the other set connecting said reaction member with the motor and including an orbitally movable gear cooperat ing with said reaction member, and drive control means governing the operation of one of said sets of gearing to permit running of said motor while the drum remains stationary.

A hoisting mechanism comprising a drum, and driving means therefor including a motor having a rotatable casing, a set of gearing connected to said drum and driven from one end of said motor, and a set of gearing cooperating with a reaction member and connected to the other end ofsaid motor for further reducing the speed at which the drum is driven through the first mentioned set of gearing, a gear of one of said sets being directly driven by said motor casing.
23. Hoisting mechanism comprising a rotatabiy mounted drum, and driving means therefor including a motor having a rotatably mounted casing and a power shaft whose axis traces a surface upon rotation of said casing, gearing including a pinion adjacent one end of and driven by said power shaft and a cooperating reaction gear for effecting rotation of said motor casing, and gearing including a gear carried by said drum and a gear carried by said motor casing adjacent the other end of said power shaft for effecting rotation of said drum at a less angular rate than the rate of rotation of said motor casin 2%. A hoisting mechanism comprising a drum, and driving means therefor including a rotatable motor, a set of gearing connecting one end of said motor to said drum, and a set of gearing connected to the other end of said motor for further reducing the speed at which the drum is driven through the first mentioned set of gearing, a gear of each of said sets being directly driven from said motor.

In a hoisting mechanism, a rotatable drum carying a gear, and driving means therefor including a motor, gearing connected to the gear carried by said drum and driven directly by said motor from one end thereof, and gearing driven from the other end of said motor for further reducing the speed at which said drum is driven through the first mentioned gearing, said second mentioned gearing comprising a gear driven directly from the corresponding end of said motor.
26. Hoisting mechanism comprising, in combination, a drum, and driving means therefor including a motor having a rotatably mounted casing, gearing actuated by said motor and arranged at one end of the latter for effecting rotation of said motor casing, and gearing arranged at the other end of said motor casing for transmitting rotation to said drum at a less angular rate than the rate of rotation of said motor casing.
27. Hoisting mechanism comprising a rotatably mounted drum having a driving gear secured thereto, a motor having a rotatably mounted casing and having projecting from said casing a gear driven by said motor, a reaction gear eoaxial with said drum with which said second mentioned gear meshes, and gearing cooperating with the driving gear secured to said drum for driving the latter including gear elements rotating on axes parallel to a line parallel to the axis of LOUIS A. MAXSON.
