My invention relates to hoisting mechanisms, and more particularly to hoisting mechanisms of the portable type.
An object of my invention is to provide unimproved hoisting mechanism. Another ob ect of my invention is to provide an improved hoisting mechanism oi the portable type which shall be very compact and in which a motor of relatively large power may 0 be employed. A stil further object. of my "ivention is to provide an improved hoisting mechanism in which a motor of relatively large power and of the very high speed type may be employed with impr. ved reduction 5 gearing whereby the winding speed of the hoisting mechanism may be kept at the dcsired rate. The driving gear 27 meshes with an internal gear 31 which is formed on tne inside of a flange 32 secured to the drum 3, the flange 32 having a braking surface 33 upon its exterior with which a brakeband and manual brake applying means 35 cooperate. The driving gear 28 meshes with an internal 36, serving; a reaction which is formed within a rim 37 formed upon the plate member 8 which serves as a reaction member. A braking surface 38 formed upon the exterior periphery of the rim 3'? is engaged by a brake band 39 under control of a manual brake applying means 40, whereby the reaction member 8 may be released or held stationary as desired. V
The tooth ratios between the gears 25, 27 and 31 and 2G, 28 and 36 may be arranged as desired to effect any desired speed reduction vv'hatever. For example, let it be assumed that the pinion 26 in ten revolutions will cause the pinion to rotate a suflieient number of times to any the motor casing one complete revolution by reason of the ftS tionary gear 36. Now if the number of teeth upon the pinions 25, 27 and 31 is properly selected, it will be possible to have almost any desired movement of the drum. For example, assiune that the ratio is such that the gear 27 would. roll only nine-tenths of the way around the internal gear 31, while the motor casing is making a complete turn; then it will be evident that dur iron a complete turn of the motor casing the internal gear 31 would have to be turned bodily one-tenth of a revolution, and that as a result the drum 6 wouldv be turned onctenth of a revolution during ten revolutions of the pinion 26, or a reduction in speed of one hundred to one would be obtained. It will be clearly evident that any other desired reduction may be provided by means of my mesh between the gear 28 and the then sta-,
held stationary. The possiblity of allowing the drum torun backward when rope is pulled off will be obvious, and also the possibility of braking the motor by the air supply in such manner as to stop the load at anygivendesired position will likewise'be obvious.

Ina hoistingmcchanism, a rotatable winding drum, driving means therefor including a motor within said drum having relatively movable elements coactingto produce power and also having a pair of rotat able final-power transmitting elements for transmitting the power produced by coaction of said first mentioned elements, and similar gear trains at opposite ends of sait. motor driven by said final power transmitting elements and each including a pinrality of gear elements beyond said power ti.-'ansinitting elements the final gear of one of said trains being fixed to said drum and the final gear of the other being mounted coaxially with the drum and means for controlling rotation-of the second mentioned final gear to hold the same stationary or to permit rotation of the 'same'at will.

In a hoisting mechanism, a rotatable rope winding drum, a motor having a casing housed therein, driving connections between said drum and motor including a stationary gear, a gear carried by said drum, SZUCl gears disposed wholly outside said casmotor disposed "therein, said motor comprising a rotatable housing and a plurality of intermeshing rotors therein extending lengthwise of the motor, and means for driving said drum by said motor comprising gear mechanism disposed at each end of saidmotor, and means whereby said gear mechanism at one of said ends effects rotation of saidliousin'g while the gearing at the other end effects drum rotation, said gear .inechanisms including pinions carried :by and on each end of one of said rotors.
7 A hoisting mechanism comprising a drum, a driving motor therefor having a casing, supporting means for said drum and =motor supporting the same toperinit relat ve rotation between said drum and easing, reduction driving gearing-between said niotor'and drum for effecting drive of said drum relative to said casing including an internalgear freely rotatable when said drum is idle, a pinion carrier by said motor,
and a gear carried .by said motor and meshing with said internal gear and pinion, and means for holding said internal gear stationary to produce rotation of said drum.
8. In a hoisting mechanism, a rotatable rope winding drum, a motor housed therein having a rotatable casing, driving connections between said drum and motor including a stationary gear, a gear carried by said drum, and motor driven gears carried by said casing and meshing with said stationary and drum carried gears respectively, said driven gears being disposed at opposite ends of said casing and outside the ends of the latter.
9. A hoisting mechanism comprising a drum, driving means therefor including a motor having a rotatable casing disposed within said drum and a pair of coaxial driving pinions disposed outside said casing with their axes extending longitudinally of the drum, a reaction member, reduction gearing including one of said pinions operatively connecting said reaction member and motor to produce rotation of said casing, and reduction gearing including the other of said pinions operatively connecting said motor and drum in driving relation to further reduce the speed at which the. drum is driven.
10. A hoisting mechanism comprising a drum, driving means therefor including a motor disposed therein having a rotatable frame, hearings on said frame, an orbitally movable element carried by said frame in said bearings with its axis parallel to but offset from the drum axis and a pair of orbitally movable driving pinions attached, to the outside of said bearings, to and driven by said rotatable element on the same axis therewith, a reaction member, reduction gearing including one of said orbitally movable driiing pinions operatively connecting said reaction member and motor to produce rotation of said casing, a gear secured to said drum, and reduction gearing includin said last mentioned and the other of said orbitally movable driving pinions operatively connecting said motor and drum in driving relation to further reduce the speed at which the drum is driven.
11. A hoisting mechanism comprisii'ig a drum, a gear secured to said drum coaxially therewith, and driving means operatively connected to said gear to rotate said drum including a reaction gear disposed coaxially therewith and a motor disposed in said drum having a rotatable casing, said casing pro viding a bearing surface on its periphery for rotatably supporting said drum, and a pair of orbitally movable gears, one meshing with each of said coaxial gears and each moving orbitally during full speed drum drive.
