Description

3 F. P. HENNESSEY 1,773,676
HOLDING DEVICE Filed April 26, 1929 Qgm Patented Aug. 19, 1936 FRANK P. HENNESSEY, OF EVANSTON, ILLINOIS HOLDING DEVICE Application filed April 28,
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in holding devices and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture.
- It is among the objects of my invention to provide a holding device which will be, arranged in a manner such that a flatiron may be removably mounted thereon and hel against displacement therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above named character which will be arranged in a manner such that it may be expeditiously attached to a'supporting device.
A further object of the invention is to arrange a device of the above named character in a manner such that the supporting member with which the device held on the member engages will be arranged in spaced relation with the surface supporting the device.
A still further object of the invention is to arrange the supporting surface in a manner such that but'a relatively small area thereof will contact with the device to be supported thereby.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
. The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be here inafter described and. claimed.
The invention willbe best understood by Fi 5 is asectional detail view depicting a b n supporting construction employed.
In the accompanying drawing wherein I have illustrated the preferred form of construction for my invention 10 indicates the and the head 22.
192a Serial No. 353,328.
lower section of my device which is arranged so as to embody a relatively flat portion 11 having an upstanding rim 12 provided around the edges thereof. ,7 Struck from the portion 11 adjacent the. rear end thereof and bent so as toextend upwardly are two lugs 13 and 14: which extend substantially parallel to the longitudinal extent of the device. Adjacent the front edge of the portion 11 an upstanding lug 15 is struck therefrom and bent to extend upwardly and this lug extends transversely with respect to the longitudinal extent of the device. riligned with the lug 15 and struck from the portion 11 intermediate the lugs 18 and 1 1 is a lug 16 which extends transversely with respect to the longitudinal extent of the device. The lugs 13, 14 and 15 are of a greater height than the rim 12 while the lug 16 is of less height than said rim.
In the lugs 15 and 16 openings are provided through which the stems 17 and 18 of the hook members 19 and 20'are extended. At
the inner endof the stems17 and 18 heads 21 and 22 are formed. Coil springs 23 and Y5 24 are disposed around the stem portions I 17 and 18 and the coil spring 23 extends be tween the lug 15 and the head 21 while the coil spring 24 extends between the coil 16 These coil springs act on the stem portions 17 and 18 to urge the hook portions 19 and 20 toward each other. T herefore, when the device is associated witha supporting structure such as that indicated by 25 the hook portions 19 and 20 may be moved outwardly so as to embrace the supporting member 25 and secure the lower section 10 in position;
The upper section 26of my improved device includes a relatively flat portion 27 which terminates in an upstanding rim 28 around the edgesthereof and the rim 28 includes a downwardly extending portion 29 that rests onthe rim 12. In the section 27 in alignment with the lugs 13, 14 and 15 pairs 9 of openings suchas 30 are formed and the section 27 is dished downwardly in the vicinity of these openings 80. As best illustrated in Fig. 5 the lug 15 has formed on the upper end thereof two upstanding ears 31 W and the ears 31 are intended to be extended through the openings and bent over and, therefore, the section 27 is supported from the upper edge of the lug 15, a similar arrangement being provided at the interconnection between the member 27 and the lugs 13 and 14 and in this manner the upper section 26 is secured to the lower section 10. In the section 27 an upstanding bead 32 is formed. Therefore, when a device such as an electric flatiron is seated on the section 27 only the portion of the flatiron engaging the bead contacts the section 27 and, therefore, the section 27 is prevented from becoming excessively heated. Also, it is apparent that the rim 28 will prevent displacement of the flatiron from engagement with the section 27 until the same is lifted therefrom vertically.
It is manifest from the foregoing description that I have provided a device which may be expeditiously attached to a supporting structure such as a so called ironing board. Further, the supporting device is arranged so that it will prevent displacement of an an ticle seated thereon and also the device is arranged so that it will be prevented from becoming excessively heated by reason of the fact that the area thereof that engages the member to be supported is greatly restricted.
\Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but
desire to avail m self of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A supporting device including a lower section having an upstanding flange provided therearound, connecting lugs struck from said lower section and bent to extend upwardly therefrom having ears on the upper ends thereof, said lugs extending above said flange, a bearing lug struck from said lower section and bent to extend upwardly therefrom, hook elements having stem portions extending through said in standing flange and said bearing lug and one of said conneet ing lugs and having enlarged heads on the inner ends of said stems, spring means disposed around said stem portions between said lugs and said enlarged head p rtions for urging said hook members toward each other, and an upper section carried by said lower sec tion and secured in position by the ears on said connecting lugs.
2. A supporting device including a lower section having an upstanding flange provided therearound, connecting lugs struck from said lower section and bent to extend upwardly therefrom having ears on the upper endsthereof, said lugs extending above said iange, a bearing lug struck from said lower section and bent to extend upwardly therefrom, hook elements having stem portions extended through said upstanding flange and said bearing lug and one of said connecting lugs and lugs having enlarged heads on the inner ends of said stems, spring means disposed around said stem portions between said bearing lug and said one of connecting lugs and said enlarged head portions for urging said hook members toward each other, and an upper section having openings formed .therein in alignment with said ears with said ears extended through said openings and bent into retaining engagement with said upper section, said upper section having depressions formed therein adjacent said openings, and a flange extending around the edge of saidupper section and downwardly into engagement with the flange on said lower section. v
A supporting device including a lower section having an upstanding flange provided tlierearound, connecting lugs struck from said lower section and bent to extend upwardly therefrom having ears on the upper ends thereof, said lugs extending above said flange, a bearing lug struck from said lower section and bent to extend upwardly therefrom, hook elements having stem portions extending through said upstanding flange and said bearing lug and one of said connecting lugs and having enlarged heads on the inner ends thereof, spring means disposed around said stem portions between said bearing lug and said one of the connecting lugs and said enlarged head portions for urging said hook members toward each other, and an upper section having openings formed therein in alignmentwith the said with said ears extended through openings and bent into retaining engagement with said upper section, said upper section having depressions formed therein adjacent said openings, and a flange extending around the edge of said upper ection and downwardly into engagement with the flange on said lower section, said upper section having an upward ly extending bead formed thereon in the por tion thereof merging with said flange.
In testimony whereof affix my signature.
FRANK P. HEI'INESSEY.
